Should Christopher Nolan Direct Bond 26?

Christopher Nolan is sharing his admiration for the James Bond franchise and why it would be an “amazing privilege” to direct a film of 007.
While speaking with host Josh Horowitz on a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the Oppenheimer director admitted he would gladly accept the opportunity if presented at the “right moment.” But is he the right director for Bond 26th, and is it even likely that this will happen? I have some strong and diversive opinions on this news as I break down what he says and what it might mean for the 007 franchise....

Nolan respected Batman enough to stay faithful to the character and add fun elements while still providing those Nolan touches. I think he would do the same for James Bond. Nolan was very sensitive making Batman Begins. WB then gave him unlimited creative control for the Dark Knight. Bond needs to up the ante with Ethan Hunt. Real creative, jaw dropping stunts . The opening of The Dark Knight Rises is a good example. Nolan would also expand Bonds appeal to a younger generation. I fear Eon will play safe and stick with the same production recipe.

I get the feeling Christopher Nolan understands Bond so well he's on a the same thinking level as the producers. They will have met on many more occasions than what's been mentioned publicly. No other director has talked about how much the films have influenced their career. He is a proper fan. I really believe he would make a brilliant Bond film and put the character, the tropes and everything we love about the series front and centre. It would not be a normal Nolan movie. It would not be marketed as that at all. I'm all in!

Just watching Inception & Tenet you know Nolan would deliver one hell of a Bond movie, He's British & understands the whole aspect of Bond. I'd put money on it that he has story points in his mind what he would do. He may not get total control but he would jump start the new era off just like he did with Batman it would be finding that relationship with Eon.

I think EON have a ticking moment here - their next movie really needs to hit a home run. The movie audience is used to Craig’s run, they may not go out to see a new Bond unless given reason to. EON is also around 10 yrs away from losing their copyright hold on the character. I think a Nolan film would both bring buts to seats, but also his true fandom shows that he will give deference to the real Bond character

Never been a huge Batman fan as far as the films. I can appreciate what he has done with them but I don’t know if that would equate to Bond in the same way. My preference would be be either Martin Campbell (he’s already introduced two other new Bond actors) or Christopher McQuarrie. Yes, he’s the M: I guy but he can do action, drama and humor which I believe needs to be the cocktail used for the next movies. Humor was lacking in the Craig era and I’d like to see more of that. The writers will be key as well. Not a fan of Phoebe Waller Bridge’s touch-ups in NTTD but I think they need a fresh approach and pass on using Purvis and Wade next film.

Campbell is 80 this year [when he's already the oldest Bond director at 62 with Casino] and his recent projects haven't been very inspiring while McQuarre is very close to Tom Cruise. Purvis and Wade themselves have said they're happy to move on but when they have brought in other writers like Peter Morgan and John Hodge the scripts haven't been suitable [Morgan's script was described as 'too John Le Carre for example]. They seems to be good at getting a script started before handing it over to other people [NTTD ended up having 6 writers-2 uncredited for example].

Besides being a James Bond fan, I am steeped in the Batman universe. What Christopher Nolan did to revive the Batman franchise after lesser efforts, is at the core of why we like him for Bond. Just imagine Christopher Nolan reworking the original Ian Fleming Moonraker into something more faithful and centered on modern conflicts. Look no further than the current Oppenheimer and The Dark Knight Rises to see the possibilities. The tone would remain as serious as the Daniel Craig era but Nolan would find ways to inject the light. I do share in the opinion that a greater degree of autonomy would have to be given to Nolan from EON, which might spark creative differences. Indeed it would be multi movie arc which is a standard now even in the John Wick films. A Christopher Nolan James Bond film would be the ultimate creative gamble right now, but one which might yield great rewards.

I think the one huge positive to take from the Craig era is the idea of one actor having his own arc. I believe the series can sustain itself in future years by letting each actor have his own story and then reset when the time comes to recast (007 certainly does not have to meet the same fate as NTTD at the end ). If they proceed with this approach then Nolan is a perfect choice at this time to regenerate interest in the series. Christopher Nolan is a massive Bond fan and is not only the type of filmmaker who would buck that trend and deliver a Bond that is more true to his roots...but his prowess, prestige, and credibility would completely insulate and protect him from any and all superficial, sensitive criticism that might otherwise be thrown at a more traditional, masculine Bond portrayal. Christopher Nolan is the kind of passionate, talented, high caliber, high profile, successful, veteran Director who could take Bond on and launch a new, more traditional incarnation of the character in a way that elevates and re-affirms Bond's legendary, iconic, timeless status and would almost certainly deliver the most financially successful James Bond film of all time. If they don't cut Nolan a blank check to make at least one Bond film with essentially 99% creative freedom...then they will regret it forever.

For Nolan, it's now or never. He has been lobbying for the opportunity to launch a new Bond for years. I am somewhat ambivalent about the possibility of a Nolan Bond, largely because it feels like we've already seen it (Nolan's own TENET was essentially a Bond film with timey-wimey stuff added, and the Craig era was strongly influenced by Nolan's Batfilms). But it's also true that the next Bond needs to come out swinging with a bold, new angle. Audiences have been trained to expect as much. Bond, for better or worse, is no longer the series it was. "Just another Bond film" won't cut it, as much as the Bond fans would like it. There's no Fleming novel like CR waiting in the wings that EON can use to set Bond on a new trajectory. Nolan has been thinking about this for years and clearly has strong ideas ready to go. It probably makes things easy for EON to hand it over to him.
@AnalyzeThisMisterBond
@AnalyzeThisMisterBond Жыл бұрын
EON knows the Bond series is at a crossroads. Fleming's novels have already started to enter the public domain in certain countries. A little over a decade from now, EON's exclusive hold on Bond will start to slip. They're very aware of that ticking clock. The Craig era was, to some extent, a last hurrah for EON. It was a "we gotta go for broke" take on the character that fulfilled both Michael G. Wilson's longstanding desire to tell Bond's origin story (something he'd lobbied for since the 80s) and allowed Barbara Broccoli to put a personal stamp on the series. This next Bond era will likely be less personal for EON and more strategic: securing Bond's place in the film landscape of the future. This is why Barbara Broccoli keeps talking about "reinvention." She intuitively knows the next Bond movie needs to be a major film event that gets folks buzzing again. Launching the next Bond's era with a high-profile Nolan movie could help or hurt that endeavor. It would be hard to shake Nolan's shadow when handing follow-ups to other directors. But there's no question that it would get everyone talking.

I would look forward to Nolan directing the next Bond film. Why? He did some great movies and brought new perspectives to Batman. I think the 007 movies need a real shaking up with a new view. Even with Craig's movies it was becoming same old, same old. I think that Nolan would take pains to ensure the script was the best and capturing the Bond persona. I agree that Nolan must have control of "his" movie. Would his ideas take James Bond so far out that it is no longer "Ian Fleming's" James Bond? Is this a chance worth taking? I think so.

As much as I like the idea of Chris Nolan (a filmmaker inspired by some of the trappings of Bond) taking on the Bond franchise itself, I can’t help but think of his interpretation as pastiche of pastiche. This is basically because both Bond and Nolan have been feeding off of each other, with the last 3 films in the Craig era in particular modeling themselves on the post-The Dark Knight blockbuster model. I worry that it would be somewhat more of the same. I’d love to be proven wrong, though.

Nolan has the power to make the 'original films' people complain we don't see enough of. He should use it.

Interesting observations and predictions David 😎.... Before "who will be the next Bond' and "who will direct" there are definitely several other factors before these questions can at least be 'guessed' at... With EON's tight grip on the reins slipping slightly by letting Bond die (Or has he? 😲😎)... Was / is this a sign that EON has some plans to change its stance in order to 'Keep up with the Jones's'... To keep Bond fresh and to lay upon the franchise a big defribulator to give it a whack into the future? Or the past? Maybe? So, if EON do this and let their protective guard down a little, would this guard be low enough to let a Director to put their stamp on the franchise? Are EON about to hand down to a younger generation under them (Gregg Wilson etch) and are simply giving him a clean slate to make things easier? We can only guess at the plans that EON have planned, and plans they must have indeed. Everyone has their own take on the future of Bond and what way it should go... For me personally, I would like to see a Director who is good at the character building and presentation of the character, for instance : look how Spielberg portrayed and built Oscar Schindler... and the characters in the film 'Amistaad' - that sort of character introduction and we grow with them once again - if indeed it is a reboot? If there is no reboot and we stay as is, then a fresh face for Bond ( my fav was Aidan Turner) and with more modern NASA borrowed tech gadgets (no vanishing cars) a 'Kingsman' type of slant to the on-screen conflicts and a baddie like Sir Anthony Hopkins with a silver quarter skull.... Off we go again 😁 All this is assuming Bond is actually dead? Safins garden had (quote) 'not all plants harm' (unquote) what villan would make a killing nanobot without an antidote? Why is Bond above Safins garden when the blast comes? Imagine if EON do bring back Daniel and say "April Fool".... Anything can happen on the next 2byears - watch this space! 💥🇬🇧🎬👍🍻😎

I think he’ll be awesome and seems like the right time for Christopher Nolan to give us a take on 007 there’s still so much from the books that haven’t made it to film spoiler alert. Don’t read any further if you haven’t read Moonraker… My favorite book in the series so far is Moonraker not that it’s the most action pack book but because I feel like it left the most impact on me at the end. So far this is the only bond book where he doesn’t get the girl at the end, but the chemistry of the two throughout the book is so palpable The reader is waiting for the moment, where they finally get to be together at the end, and when they don’t, it is such a cliffhanger, but also true to reality both of them were spies, and the woman was engaged in real life, and had to put that aside for the good of her country on mission to read her walking away from bond at the end was such a cliffhanger and so unexpected. We have yet to see something like that in a bond film and I think it would be a pleasant surprise and a welcomed change to actually see the amazing double oh spy, not get the girl at the end for once lol not that he couldn’t because he’s not amazing but because this woman who is a great spy, had a real life, she had to put aside until the job is done and desires to return to that life in spite of wanting to be with bond anyway just my thoughts, incredible book action packed the card matches in this book are fantastic. Must read if anyone has not read Moonraker.

I’m a huge Nolan fan, I’ve liked to loved most of his films… but that being said I don’t think so. The Bond film franchise has long survived on anonymous workmen. John Glen, Martin Campbell, Terence Young etc and when they go in for more auteurist directors, they can go right like Skyfall or really wrong like Spectre and Quantum of Solace. What people forget about Nolan is that he isn’t just a Director. He’s also writer and producer, and he always has more than the usual amount of control over his projects. This is a guy who can come out with a three hour, partly black and white, non-chronological biopic of the man who invented the atomic bomb for crying out loud. So, for Nolan to direct a Bond movie, he’d either have to forego his usual perks and control or Eon would have to work alongside his company, Syncopy. Neither of which I really see happening. Not to mention, bringing in someone like Nolan runs too much the risk of having it be Nolan’s film, rather than Bond’s. I’d personally rather an up and coming Director. Someone like a Chinonye Chuckwu, who worked with Eon on the film Till, last year. They’d be able to sponsor a younger filmmaker, and would also have more control.

‘When the time is right’ also means when there is no actor in place, as he would definitely want to be able to cast (or at least have casting approval) for the lead actor so it would need to be when the part is vacant (as it is now). The Broccoli’s are getting old now & may be more willing to loosen their grip. If the Broccoli’s don’t know where to take it next Nolan definitely has ideas on what he wants to do with it.

Christopher Nolan revived the Batman series and Batman remained the reason people went to see those movies. James Bond as a brand is bigger than Nolan and while he would put his own signature on Bond, I think he would likely apply the same appreciation for the character and the mythology and the foundation of Bond as he did with Bats. That being said, I wouldn't mind seeing Eon Productions loosen the reigns and go for directors like Christopher Nolan, who bring their own creative freedom to Bond, with the movies being stand-alone stories rather than tied in - theres nothing to suggest that each movie from 26 onwards can't be a stand-alone story with a different actor playing Bond each time, bringing a new take on the character with a different director bringing their own style to the character and story. Nolan's Bond would be very much in his style, but after Nolan, could you get another director to take on Bond in their style. I think at this point in it's history, James Bond is bigger than any one person and any one director - whether you're name is Christopher Nolan or not., it's James freekin' Bond

Hi David, the one aspect of this you didn't cover was Michael G Wilson and his likelihood, or not, of continuing with the franchise. If he is looking to bow out at this point and leave Barbara to continue, she may well be looking to someone like Christopher Nolan to Direct, AND Produce alongside her.The conversation they may have had is probably the same that Danny Boyle had, but this time up front of any decisions being made. If Christopher Nolan is the fan we believe him to be, and he would need to be of the ilk of a David Arnold, he may well just put the "Star" firmly on Bond and less on himself, which would make for a really exciting proposition. It would also open the possibility of a Christopher Nolan Trilogy of films with a one actor / Bond arc, similar to the Craig era, and as he did with Batman. The question today might not be, Who's replacing Daniel? but Who's replacing Michael? Is that a Christopher Nolan? After all, Daniel had co-Producer credit for Spectre. Your thoughts?
