Should filmmakers read David Mamet's books?

David Mamet has certainly fallen from grace in the past couple decades, adopting awful political views, releasing a strange writing Masterclass, and generally being a crotchety boomer. But is there anything we can learn from his earlier writing? I revisit his early classic book "On Directing Film" to find out.

I get it when someone *does* something so horrible that you question your relationship with their work, but when someone just *says* something horrible? That's so frequent with great artists that it just can't matter

There's some maturity in recognizing that someone you don't agree with does have useful insight to provide, but this also comes across as a very entitled perspective. As if, because he doesn't share your particular political views, he doesn't deserve to be respected or compensated for his work. It's quite a childish view of the world.

100% I feel like I didn't reach this level of nuanced political maturity until I turned 50. You need to live through a few political cycles where the people you held up as heroes let you down and the people you held up as villains ended up not being the bad guys you assumed they were. You're less cocksure as you age. To quote David Mamet's own moment when he realized this himself, "I had a neighbor that was on the complete opposite side of my politics and we traded political books with one another. His were more convincing to me." Go figure. He actually read material that wasn't biased to favoring his preferred politics at the time.

A strong viewpoint is paramount to making movies. The greats had this along with the courage of their convictions. This is the reason the ‘white boomer’ films have been so influential. They present strong views and speak universal truths about human nature. Granted, some employ cliched stereotypes to do so, but these stereotypes in themselves are often a distillation of a universal truth. I look at many of them not as art that has ‘aged badly’ but as a time capsule of human truths that have been unfettered by the current narrative . I enjoyed this video and will go back and re-read his book.

Also, the thing is, an experienced actor will only put up with Mamet-style "direction" from Mamet. If you're not David Mamet and told an actor who had a question "It's all in the words" they'd probably give up on you and forge their own path.

Just because you don't agree with someone that doesn't necessarily mean that you can't learn something from them. Which is a hard thing to accept because emotions, ego and personal taste can block being open to something new and different.

Hey man, really enjoying your channel. I used to sit in diners reading Mamet, and I still think I've learned a lot from reading him. There is one book of essays I can't recall the title, that started to leak some of his more venomous personal views out into the world, and I was just stunned. Turned me right off. Glad I encountered it sort of last, though...but, on the whole, there's no denying some of insight into craft. But, yeah, personally I just had to detach. It's a good lesson in controlling our tendencies toward hero-worship!

Yeah, I think myself and the majority of actors take issue with Mamet's dogma that a character is all in the words. Just say the dialogue in a straightforward, uninflected manner and it'll all be there. Dialogue can be interpreted in any number of ways -- even his dialogue. Mamet just won't acknowledge that.

He’s a classic boomer in all the worst ways. He came of age in an era where everything was much easier: early success, cash flowing freely for projects, virtual messianic stature in the industry. Now the world is different and instead of using his success and stature to raise up the new generation of filmmakers he attacks everyone and blames the decline of his career on people using pronouns. He punches down in the worst way.

I love the book and I enjoyed your video. But a lot of his films from 80-90s, I often feel actors are very wooden and unnatural.(At least he's doing what he says) And there are beautiful films shot in long takes. On one hand there is montage/uninflected images, they are very important to understand to be utilized but on the other hand there are long takes, method acting, mise-en-scene, music, sound, etc. that are also as important as montage.

So, I just pretty much read about Mr. Mamet on Wick, because prior to this video, I wasn’t aware of who he is. You insulted him so much, I just had to do a little research for myself, and I must say, I don’t have any issues with his views. Apparently he has denounced himself from being a far left lunatic, which I find very commendable. And the whole “teachers are pedophiles” thing was a little disingenuous on your part, because in fairness to him, in CONTEXT he was in support of parents rights to have a say on what their children learn, which was in opposition to the “don’t say gay bill” out of Florida. You shouldn’t use your platform to disparage folks just because they’re Trump supporters. Stick to what you say this is about…FILM.

Calling someone an "asshole" just because they have a different view or opinion from yours says a lot more about you than it says about them. You're completely free to disagree with someone who has different opinions than yours, but for you to try and discredit someone who is a great talent just comes across as childish and petty. Also I recently watched interviews with David Mamet on Bill Maher and Joe Rogan shows and to me he actually sounds like a normal Common Sense guy who is calling out woke culture and how ridiculous the far left has become in the past 10 years and how this woke culture is completely out of control. I work in the industry, and the DEI (diversity equity and inclusion) stuff in the industry is getting really insane and ridiculous. Most networks and TV shows now have diversity quotes, and instead of having a meritocracy where we hire the best and most talented people, we hire people based on skin color. As artists, we must speak out against this kind of nonsense of having diversity quotes on film sets, in writer's rooms, or on screen talent. I highly recommend that you read Recessional by David Mamet. He talks a lot about how this push for diversity is destroying and ruining our industry in that book.
