In this video, I talk about foxing. Again. There are tons of questions about foxing out there, so I'm trying to address all the ones that I can. This is the first part in a new playlist on foxing that I'm trying to piece together!

There's quite a few books in my church library with foxing in them as they're very old. I'm just wondering if mold needs oxygen to survive and whether depriving it would work?
@antiquebookcollective
@antiquebookcollective Жыл бұрын
You're right, mold does need oxygen. So, starving it of that could kill it, but, long term, your best bet will probably be to get something to absorb moisture from the air too. There are moisture absorbers out there for cars and whatnot, but I prefer dehumidifiers. :) The mildew spots on the books will remain, sadly they're really hard to get rid of, but getting rid of the moisture and/or oxygen can stop or slow the spread! Hope that helps!

I keep some of my books in plastic containers. The containers are kept safely inside my home. Is this a safe option?
@antiquebookcollective
@antiquebookcollective 6 ай бұрын
So long as the inside stays dry and the container doesn't get too hot or cold, they should be fine. :)

I have many books with foxing that are not so old. For example from 2003 or 2008. They are in the house of my parents. In a humid room. It is a very very humid village near the Mediterranean see. But they have a very hard foxing. Like many little brown spots. All the books have foxing on the sides, while only few books apparently random are completely ruined. There was a stone, a mineral (that i got fear that was uraninite) in that room. It was an only 1,5 inch stone. I threw it away in 2017. The room is frontside the sea, the sea is at 10 meters. Can some little part of uranium still stay on the books or it is because of humidity? In the other rooms the few books are better. I measuread humidity some years ago, and it was 60/70%. Outside it is even worst. When I was younger it was better, there were also dry days. But I've got fear of that stone. I'm sorry for my very bad english.

I don't need pictures for this. Thanks for the offer though. :) Now, with that said, the foxing is definitely a result of the high humidity and there is likely some mildew/mold on those books as well, but basically all books have at least some mold and mildew on them as it is, even new ones, so it isn't necessarily the end of the world there. What you'll want to do is get a dehumidifier going (you can buy good ones for like 40 dollars) and that will help to get the humidity down for you. You want it to be between 30 and 55 percent humidity, that'll save your books from deteriorating more. :) As for the rock and your fears about it, I want to say that I'm not an expert, but from my experience and studies of minerals and such, uranium ore isn't so insanely radioactive that you have to be scared of it--uranium has to go through a long, very tedious process to get to the point it is used for weapons and nuclear power, the ore itself seldom has any more than about one percent uranium by volume, usually a whole lot less. A lot of household items, including ceramic plates from some companies, are much, much more radioactive than uranium ores ever will be, and people eat off of those! Even today they do! Long story short, I personally wouldn't be too worried about it. If you are, you could possibly take some of your books to a college with a geology office and ask if they could check the books for you, I'm told they like that sort of thing every now and then here in America. You could also get a Geiger counter, but I strongly suspect your books won't be irradiated to the point there is anything you could detect. I hope that helps, and your English was just fine. Hope you have a wonderful weekend! :)

Hey i have books that are only 2 years old and they have yellow spots (it doesn't look like mold), i live in a very humid region. Do you think it will spread to my other books and is this mold or foxing ?
@antiquebookcollective
@antiquebookcollective 11 ай бұрын
Sounds like mildew (a type of mold) to me. It'll spread if you store them somewhere humid, but a dehumidifier should keep your books safe! Hope that helps. :)

Thank you 😊 So if i make sure that my room is not as humid it will not spread to my other books ?
@antiquebookcollective
@antiquebookcollective 11 ай бұрын
@@Nananima Yeah, having low humidity should keep it from spreading and save the rest of your books at the same time. It's recommended to keep humidity between 35 and 50 percent, but I like to keep it on the lower end with my own books, just to be safe. airpurifieressentials.com has some great info on dehumidifiers, so it could be worth checking out their site. (I'm working on getting some articles written with them for just books, hope to get that done soon-ish!) All told you could be skimpy on this and spend just 30 to 50 bucks, which I think is totally worth it if it's saving all of your books! :) Hope that helps.

Thank you that helped me a lot. I was worried that i might have to throw them away, i cant really afford to buy new ones (and most of them have only 2-3 spots). The humidity in my room is around 48-66 but most of the time 57 (i live next to a river), i will try to keep it under 50 thank you 😊

@@Nananima Happy to help! Hope this takes care of the problem--I've been doing this for years and don't have an issue with the mildew spots spreading once I get the humidity down. :) A quick, cheap fix could also be to put out little bowls (like Pyrex size) of baking soda and changing them every few weeks too. Dehumidifiers are better by far, but the baking soda can be a nice stop-gap measure. :)

What about air tight container Buddy 💯💯💯💯
@antiquebookcollective
@antiquebookcollective Жыл бұрын
Those can limit the spread to books outside of the container, but those inside the container can be impacted if you've got mildew-related foxing. As for the foxing caused by oxidation, air-tight containers might slow it, but it takes years and years for that foxing to take place and that foxing can't really spread, so not as necessary for that one. Hope that helps! :)

It amusing that you remark on the foxing in the encyclopedia reprint. If you look at it carefully, you’ll see that’s actually part of the printing and has a repeated pattern throughout the pages. The reprinter wanted it to look old so they faked the foxing. And if you compare sets, you’ll see that pretty clearly.
@antiquebookcollective
@antiquebookcollective 10 ай бұрын
It's interesting that you mention that! I had noticed it and thought something as well, but it isn't repeating. The 'repeats' are just where is penetrated through one page into the next or more or less photocopied itself onto the page opposite of it. It's interesting trying to figure out whatever the "foxing" in those books really is though. All in due time, I guess!
@antiquebookcollective
@antiquebookcollective 10 ай бұрын
And let me add that I see foxing do this in books quite often where the discoloration gets onto the pages touching it. Never seen it penetrate beyond that, which happens in this set, and I think that serves to further your point that the apparent reprinter did it.
@roberteliason3261
@roberteliason3261 10 ай бұрын
If you leaf through the book and carefully compare the pages, you’ll find identical foxing patterns that appear in all three volumes. And that the foxing on a given page is repeated across all printed copies - which is impossible without it being pre-printed. It’s just artificial aging - there’s no real foxing there. They had a small number of these images of foxing that they incorporated with the printing. Once you catch on to the patterns, they are impossible to ignore.
