I've been getting book worms in my stephen king books I actually found one still living inside. How do I get rid of them?

Yuck! There's a lot of odd fixes out there, the first thing I'd personally do is put ALL your books outside on a hot summer day and let them bake for maybe an hour. Once you've done that, I would then check the humidity of the room you keep them in (book works usually happen when you have too much humidity) and possibly get a dehumidifier. Dehumidifiers aren't too much money and you just need to get yout level down between 35 and 50 percent. (Personally I like to shoot for 40-ish.) I'm told that sprinkling certain seasonings, like black pepper, cayenne pepper, and even using some essential oils too, can also deter them. Sprinkle that stuff on the shelves you have your books on and that should help to keep them away. Now, with all of that said, I HIGHLY recommend putting your affected books in quarantine. You don't want the book worms going from one book to the next. I'd also look into finding out what particular bug is laying it's eggs on your books and then take steps to keep them away in the future too.

Honestly most old Latin books you can buy for like $100-300. Ones like that one tend to be like $20-30. Some older 1500-1600s stuff can get upwards to $500+. You likely aren't gonna get a million dollars for a Latin book unless it's like the Gutenberg Bible or something. That said, the cheaper prices make it affordable for normal people who want old Latin books lol

Seems to me that eBay is hiding/ making it difficult to find the description text of an item when scrolling with your cellphone. Or maybe, just me,,LOL. Desk top/laptop shows more listing data. Have your own description text for your vintage, antique or used item as you can see, feel and smell the condition as it is. AI has its place but not with used items. IMO, eBay may have been planning on having the AI feature as an added "fee" if it becomes popular.

We had a leaky roof but weren't aware. It dripped on a chair for months, and the chair got mold. My books were about 3 meters (10 feet) away but were dry. The room's walls don't seem to have mold. I don't see any mold on any book, so I assume they don't have mold? Is there a way to make sure?

Your books almost certainly got some mold spore on them, but there's mold everywhere and books have some spores in them the second they're made. A little mold isn't the end of the world, but it can be negative for people with asthma. I'm told blacklight can show of mold's iridescence and let you see if it's bad, but ai have yet to actually see that. For me, I just make sure that the books I have stay dry and I always have an air purifier going in the room they are in. It could be wroth using an ozone generator in the room your books are in to kill any mold and spores that might be in there. Personally I would 110% use an ozone generator in there. All of that being said, there are tests you can do for mold, but I don't really worry about doing those myself, I just ensure my books are dry and in a room that's between 35 and 50 percent humidity. @@sophieedel6324 Happy it helped! I'd highly recommend having a weekend day that you can spend outside and laying your books out in the sun for maybe 4 hours in total. Over exposure to sunlight will sunbleach them, but the UV light of the sun will help sanitize them and lessen your mold risk. :)

I have read that mold is everywhere in the environment. So would every book eventually decade due to mold after centuries, even if kept away from moisture?

Sure, the "old book smell" is the smell of the books decaying. However, excess moisture just speeds up the decaying process and renders your book unreadable. I've had and read books 250 years old and older that are beautiful and the Bible I bring to church every Sunday is 170 years old. So long as you keep a book dry and oil its cover you're going to be able to enjoy it much longer. :)

Some people do that and see good success with it. I just like making new listings though and letting just about everything else sit and simmer, waiting for their buyer. Otherwise, I just keep going back to listings like a dog to its vomit.

Ist this outdated? There was a big study initiated or granted by congress on leather books conditioning/preserving from old archives and national libraries... the conclusion was to stop using mink oil and other natural oils due to autoxidation and rancidity. Curators have long moved to synthetic oils for books and Oldtimers as well as antique leather chairs and so on.

Based on what I've seen, natural oils still work best. Rancidity may be an issue, but I've yet to see it happen even once. Dry leather that cracks and flakes off, however, is something I've seen a billion times. Several commenters on videos where I talk about this all agree that natural oils are the only way to go as well, which makes me think I'm on the right side of the boat. :) (P.S. There are other studies out there that say not to oil books at all, which is markedly a terrible conclusion. Ergo, I'd rather do my own research amd testing at this point, regardless of who said what.)

I was listening to your podcast while I was delabeling a stack of books to list, and heard that we share the same family background. My dad's people were also "Russian Germans", who were farmers who immigrated to the Volga region of Russia (they were German Lutherans, but there were also a lot of German Mennonites and some German Catholics). They were offered the promise of being exempt from conscription, and when the Tsar went back on that promise, they were looking at the killing fields of the Tsarist Wars pretty nervously and looking for a way out. Luckily, the Kansas railroad system was trying to encourage farmers to settle along the rail lines that were being built, and like a lot of others, my family took the offer of free tickets by ship to America, and a train ticket to Kansas, where they settled in and began farming, speaking Plattsdeutsch (Low German) and probably avoiding being shot as Kulaks in the Soviet Union. There was a lot of Russian-German settlement in Kansas (here's an article: swissmennonite.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/migrations-of-russian-germans-to-kansas-2.pdf) and apparently elsewhere as well. They probably understood the idea behind the Chinese saying "At some point, every man must make the decision to abandon his luggage and run for his life"...

I'm not quite sure what you mean by that, but my stand is that the government shouldn't have even a fraction of the control that they do--I'm a Constitutional Republican. Additionally, I think that no government should ever have the power to say that someone's life isn't equal to another's, regardless of age, race, or the such. Small government fixes lots of problems, big governments make big problems. :)

Hello! I'm new to reselling, I just bought 10 Duck Brand 10.5in x 15in yellow bubble mailers, on sale. Any suggestions as to what I could safely ship w these? They're big. They don't seem to be waterproof :o probably won't buy these again, wish I had the foresight! lol

You can ship clothes, sure, but some folks use those for bigger books. For me, I sometimes use bubble mailers as glorified bubble wrap for things that I ship out, did that just yesterday, actually. Other sellers out there use them more religiously than me for protecting items shipped out, but I've had no issues without them. But, again, you can use them for shipping books too. People do it. I just hate it and lots of buyers don't like it too, but it's sort of expected nowadays. Hope all of that helps!

@@thriftingsisters1226 Well, I'm no fan of Blackrock, but I appreciate and support the localization of markets to more regional spheres because that's the world we're getting into by all measures that I can see. For the time being, globalism is dead. (Luckily.) As such, local markets need to pricing power and this is a good step in that direction as far as I'm concerned. :)

I have yet to have any trouble with water, and I've shipped out tens of thousands of books. As bad as the Post Office is, I guess they don't leave parcels in puddles just yet! Hahaha

I love seeing how fellow book sellers package their books. I just started up an Etsy store last year and am loving what I’m doing! I also started selling on Pango Books within the past few months. I put each book in a self sealing cellophane bag, then bubble wrap and finally bubble envelopes or boxes. I also do the shake test.

I have several jobs on the side that I do for myself, businesses I'm working on starting too, but this is my full time income. (And I work maybe 25-ish hours a week on it most weeks. More when I want more money, less when I'm busy and/or don't need every penny right away. It's nice with eBay because I can put in whatever time I want and get rewarded rather proportionally.) All that being said, I like to tell people this is my job because, again, it's what I make my money with. Investing is also a main income source for me, but I don't really put in enough hours to really call it a job, more a hobby, I guess. Lol But investment money doesn't go toward life expenses, it is for retirement/business creation. Hope this answer helps!

I do use padded mailers (25+yrs in bookstores in shipping and receiving) but books that aren't just simple pamphlets get a piece of cardboard backing the size of the book & then are wrapped in bubble wrap that's securely taped. Then again, I'm not selling antique books but mostly craft & cooking books.

I have found mould on the back of my bookcase but on the side where the pages touch the back. I cannot see any mould on the books themselves. Safe to say I am getting rid of the bookcase but what do I do with the books? There are two rows and I think the first row should be fine but the ones that were touching the backing do I throw just in case? Do I wipe with a cloth and isolate and see how the get on?

As I'm sure you know, mold spores are out there and can spread whether we see them or not. It's likely that there are spores on the books. That being said, there are things you can do to kill off some of that mold, I like Clorox wipes for newer books that aren't as fragile as antiques, but, even then, I do use some Clorox wipes (and I add rubbing alcohol to that sometimes, depending on the book) and I wipe the book down with that to kill mold, germs, and even some bad smells. It's not 100%, you won't kill it all, but I find it's enough most of the time to get rid of everything that I can. Hope that helps, no one likes throwing away stacks of books!

Morning... I have an early 19th century "Pocket" Bible...the leather is very dry, and flaking in some areas. I recently purchased a small tin of some Pecard's "Antique Leather Conditioner." It is to be applied by hand, left to soak in and dry. I'm looking for a product and tecnique that a museum/antique conservator might employ. Your thoughts, please? Glad you're liking the channel! :) Sorry, but I don't have any tips pr techniques that pros like that would use for that company's conditioner. Usually soaking something is a no-no, hence why I have no tips. Sorry. That being said, when oiling, the professionals who do oil books rub in the oil using small concentric circles, like how I did in this video. It could be worth trying that same method with your conditioner, but I really have no tips for that one as I've never used it and haven't ever heard of conservators or museums using it. Not to say it wouldn't work, leather is leather, but I just don't know about the specifics of your stuff.

Hi there, have you any tips on how to treat mold on handwritten documents, like journals or diaries? I'm worried I'll further damage them by cleaning it wrong or something. Some recommend hydrogen peroxide for example. If you could help me with this, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Sorry, but I don't have any exact tips for that, but I'd suspect it's the same as what I would do for books. Hydrogen peroxide would likely work great, just be sure to dilute it with water (I'd throw in a little rubbing alcohol to increase your chances of killing the mold off), and then you probably want to use a q-tip to apply it and rub on the paper. Be super careful and pick a little test area to be sure that there aren't any bad reactions. I actually went through a whole set of books about a month ago where I used Clorox wipes on the pages themselves and that sure did well for me. Of course, I'm not a conservationist and a true one could likely help you more, but that's just what I'd try. Good luck!

I'll try and wipe them down any way with a cloth at least and I'm considering paying a Document Restoration service to treat my diaries here in Ireland. I emailed them earlier today, and hoping for some feedback soon! I do have the equivalent of Clorox Wipes for multipurpose cleaning, called Multipurpose Surface Wipes. That would work, right? I know its a little strange, but my diaries and journals are all I have of past memories and a record of my journey that I'm hoping to turn into a book, and that they might become destroyed by mold, or might not be saved from further damage, really gives me anxiety! Thanks again, really appreciate the tips!

@@Irishjay_94 I hope the pros can help! My wipes are bleach based, I think, and I actually added alcohol to it because it is supposed to be good at killing mold. It's not strange at all, it's a big thing for a lot of people! Just know that one of the most important things for keeping your documents safe is low humidity. Dehumidifiers are the key to that and they can be cheap too. :)

If you've got mold over the entire page then I don't think that just some bleach could save you. You might want to look into getting a pro to clean it and do things properly.
