Should I Use a Bluetooth Mic with Dragon?

Bluetooth microphones are compact, convenient and extremely portable. They free you from messy wires and big, bulky headsets so, in theory, they should be a dream come true for using with Dragon. Right?
If you've read my book "The Writer's Guide to Training Your Dragon", you'll know the answer is 'probably not'. I don't generally recommend using Bluetooth headsets with Dragon and, in the video above, I explain why.

Thank you so much. I am set up in the office, wired with a high quality headset, but am now working from home because of the pandemic. I was wondering precisely about this issue. I have to buy another headset (workplace is locked). Your video is helped me decide to go with the wired option.

Really useful video, thanks Scott. I've been using Dragon voice recognition software for several years now being a disabled person and always get the Plantronics Bluetooth headset but they drive me insane. Not only does the very cheap hook that goes over the ear snap after a few months of use, it endlessly stops pairing. Lost count of how many times I've had to close everything down, restart my computer when it glitch or keep removing the USB dongle and pair headset all over again - probably every other day

Question: I like to pace and talk. I don't want to sit down while dictating, so how should I best do this?

I'm looking at the "Dragon Bluetooth Wireless Headset", which looks like the one you have there, to use with Dragon Anywhere (the mobile version". How different/better is it from the mics in a smartphone/tablet? If at all? What I'd like is something to take quick notes walking around, maybe to push the button to bring the focus to the dictation app with the mic live, and just talk into it without necessarily even looking at it--then cleaning up the rough notes later. For the mic to be working in Dictation mode unless a phone call comes in, just like Bluetooth audio usually playing audiobooks or music unless a call comes in. For the result to be "most of the words and most of the punctuation". I can't use Dragon on my computer since they withdrew Mac support. I can't use an earlier version, because macOS is making everything consistently 64-bit, which presumably means that older versions will stop working.

Can you tell me if a Bluetooth bone conduction headphone that has a microphone built into it would work adequately?

What’s your experience/thoughts on Bluetooth dragon handheld microphones? I m family doctor and was thinking of getting one?

I don't recommend them. Wired is universally more accurate. For your usage, look into Philips SpeechMike or Olympus RecMic models.

What is your experience with built in microphones, say the surface pro?

OK for quick messages, emails etc but not accurate enough for long-form writing. You also need to be in a very quiet environment for any acceptable accuracy as they generally do not cancel noise well.

I agree. Been trying out dragon on the surface pro 4 for 2 days...looking to buy a proper microphone. Any suggestions re: headset vs Philips speechmike SMP 4000?

Excellent and honest video, you should also mention the EMF especially from the new 5G - combined with Bluetooth gives you a low frequency cancer causing radiation antenna in your ear..

Joey Shmoey has already posted 1 years ago reply addressing Scott Baker's book bluetooth headset advice being outdate then and now [10/12/2020] Nobody should or would argue against a hardwired headset for Dragon dictation as being the best choice, eventhough not always a practical one for some job applications. I posted on his KZfaq Bluetooth headsets for DRAGON because Scott's post hadn't consider jobs were only a Bluetooth headset is the only practical use for using the DRAGON dictation features. I used a Corsair bluetooth headset with DRAGON V.12 back in 2015 for doing Estate inventory in which one needs to be able to walk through rooms and Dictate items and amounts quickly Obviously because Estates can have thousands of items to appraise and inventory. Because the battery life on the headset has since become useless and because it isn't replaceable by conventional means I need a new wireless headset. But when it was working it worked with about 95 % accuracy. Used in Excel and WORD with the commands tab and next line working well. I know others who use it their warehouse inventory also. [NOTE: It worked better in MS WORD than Excel and so I often would dictate the inventory list into WORD and then Copy Paste it into an Excel spread sheet to tally items in categories. With Technology advances there are lots of bluetooth headsets capable of working well with DRAGON. I believe most below $100.00 would work just fine. Although I do agree with Scott on getting a headset with its own Bluetooth dogle will always be the best choice.

There's nothing outdated about my advice. Dragon still requires a decent quality Bluetooth headset with its own dongle to perform accurately. Please note that my book (which covers v15 of the software, still the current version) is aimed primarily at long-form fiction writers. Bluetooth headsets are fine for the sort of professional use you are describing as well as business communications and even some non-fiction writing. But for someone writing 50k+ word novels with complex names and terms, 95% accuracy isn't going to cut it. The editing process would be too time-consuming and costly. For those writers, the best option is still a wired headset and/or voice recorder on the go.

@@scottbaker3455 Scott, outdated only in the sense of leaving out alternative uses where Bluetooth Headsets being a job necessary requirement. The rest of your basic Bluetooth headset dongle advice is still sound.

He’s writing books aimed at longform fiction writers. Why on earth would he cover niche uses like estate sale inventories? The advice is still sound for fiction writers. Wired headsets are the way to go.
