One of the most common concerns people have after an operation is the experience of pain.
All surgery has at least some pain. For surgery like gallbladder operations the pain should be manageable. If it requires more than over the counter type pain medications it may be time to talk to your surgeon.
In this video I discuss several situations where pain is normal, but also some of the situations where the pain may represent a more serious issue and should be brought to the attention of your surgeon.
As always thank you for watching and I appreciate any of your comments below.

Just had mine out 3 weeks ago. Pain from the incision through the abdominal muscle incision was the worst. I honestly didn’t get much relief from the hydrocodone…but ice packs were my saving grace! Immediate pain relief. People forget that ice and/or heat can be great simple pain relief

THIS! I just had a c section 10 weeks ago and now an open gallbladder removal. Up until today (a week now) managed with Tylenol & ibuprofen but the best life saver for me is my heating pad. I put it on low and place it on my back or belly before going to bed and waking up in the am.

I had my gallbladder taken out while on vacation 54 days ago. I went to the ER at 0130 and was under the knife at 1030 that morning. The team that reviewed my case agreed to prioritize. For that I am forever grateful. 54 days later I have had two extreme pain incidents. Once after eating egg foo young and another after eating Mahi Mahi, rice and then cake and ice cream. What probably did it? Rich food and overeating. I have learned that I need to eat happy meal sized portions now. I'm 6'2 (188 CM) and 190 lbs. (86 kg). No comorbidities. I used to love stuffing myself at Thanksgiving. Not anymore. I have evolved to eating 2,000 calories 5-6 times per day now. Doc, thanks for the video.

I was scared when my doctor wanted me to get an MRI before my surgery (I was VERY clostrophobic, but doctor gave me Xanax to relax me 😁). But after you mentioned stones left behind and other problems, I'm glad they did! The doctor told me he wanted to do this in case they DO find a stone lodged and they would do a procedure going down the throat to area with the stones and remove it before removing the gallbladder. Thank goodness the MRI showed everything was cleared out (stones and sludge) and was ready for surgery.

I had my GB removed yesterday. I also have Crohn’s disease and have had a bowel resection. 2 hrs ago had a dbl mastectomy. I have a lot of inflammation throughout my body and am on pain medication daily. The dr said I have a very angry belly because once he got in there it took him 45 min just to find my GB due to all the inflammation and scar tissue. So, I came out of surgery in tremendous pain. Six hours later I was in so much pain that I asked my sister to call an ambulance to take me to another hospital. I don’t understand how I can have a dbl mastectomy in Oregon and 20 minutes after surgery I am resting comfortably, but the hospital in Montana could not figure it out. I seriously thought I was going to die. Doing better now. Resting comfortably. Should have never happened.

@@shanaburch4084 The good news is that the pain when breathing will pass fairly quickly. I know it’s hard but try sleeping on your back if possible to take pressure off of the wounds. I made the mistake of constantly sleeping on my side and one of the wounds opened up resulting in infection and needing antibiotics. I hope that you finally get relief from your procedure and feel better than before.

I had my gallbladder removed 8 months ago and was having constant diarrhea and abdominal pain about a month later. This continued for 6 months until my surgeon prescribed collesevallam which controlled the diarrhea but not the pain. Two weeks ago i was hospitalised with pneumonia and put on a broad spectrum antibiotic. My pneumonia cleared up and mysteriously, so did my other abdominal pain. Im inclined to think I've had an infection following the gall bladder surgery all along.

I'm 3 weeks post Gall Bladder surgery today, the pain is awful! and I've had many surgeries before, 2 major skin graph surgeries, open heart with 4 bypasses, and more oral surgeries than I can remember, plus my back is shot and just daily life is chronic pain, and I can handle pain fairly well, but this gall bladder is kicking my butt! constant stinging pain that doesn't let up, can't sleep much at a time, I only sleep due to complete exhaustion, and a few hours later I'm awake from the stinging or burning where my gall bladder used to be, my wife had hers out 2 months before me and she's had no issues with hers, I saw the NP last week and told her about it, they are going to call me tomorrow and see how I'm doing, I don't think they will like the report that I'm going to give them, and I'm guessing they will try to ultra sound me next week if nothing changes, I was supposed to have it taken out in 2014, but it didn't really bother me then, they noticed it due to getting US on my heart and my GB, but they needed to fix the heart first, and since it didn't bother me yet I left the GB alone, 9 years later it flares up and it's gotta go! and I've done everything right after surgery, that's why I don't understand this pain that is still there, do you have any Ideas? @RichHilsden

I had gallbladder surgery in 2016 due to repeated pain my upper abdomen. I was told my galbladder needed to be removed at 26 years old. After surgery, my pain got way worse. I went to the doctor and he told me the pain was associated with the surgery. Flash forward to 3 years later, I was having the most pain I've ever experienced in my upper abdonmen and was told it was GERD. GERD medication did nothing for me and I never experience "heartburn." This pain feels like it is in my muscle. Now flash forward to 2024 and I consistently sent off metal detectors at airports and concerts and no answers as why except it may be caused from a clamp. I've also heard they wouldn't use clamps that would set off a metal detector in the last 20 years. MRI showed nothing. Sonogram showed nothing. I have been diagnosed with a lipoma on my right side back. But this was recent and I have been having the pain for 7 years.

Had a horrendous attack of gallbladder inflammation, subsequently stabilised in hospital (1 week). Listed for gallbladder removal in c. 2 months - never happened. A further two months later, I collapsed in the street readmitted to ER and found to have a recurrance of inflamation requiring emergency surgery. Surgeon found the gall-bladder had basically died and was fused to my abdomen and my liver. I was told I had an 'abnormal physiology'. I sustained a bile-leak which went on for one month (inpatient) - was awaiting transfer to a specialist unit for complete reconstruction when the bile leak appeared to slow down. I had been on several different IV antibiotocs for three weeks and eventually discharged with a bag/tube in situ which was removed in specialist outpatient visit. No real idea what actually happened. Guess I was extremely lucky - thus far, four years, no further issues - I eat what I want.

Informative video. I had my gallbladder removed last October, followed by having to go back to remove the stone that was still in the duct. The bile duct had to be cut with a stent inserted. Immediately following that surgery I suffered acute pancreatitis for 11 days in hospital. Home recovery has been a challenge. Now feeling better, except for a fluttering and dull spasm in my abdomen that is internittent. I am scheduled to have the stent removed on January 23rd. Should I be concerned and ask to have bloodwork to check enzyme levesl/functions? Thank you ~ Diane

@RichHilsden 6 ай бұрын
The stent has to come out eventually. Typically, the stent is taken out, the the doctor performs a cholangiogram with the stent removal to ensure everything is ok. Sometimes there are additional stones that need to be removed at that time. Good luck.

I had mine removed 6 days ago (laparoscopic removal). I was able to manage my pain for the most part with Tylenol and a muscle relaxer. However, I experienced excruciating pain 2 days after surgery on the surgical site and my shoulders. Oxicodone did not help at all. I was told the pain was due to the gas introduced during surgery. There was nothing to do but wait for my body to reabsorb it or release it. The pain was worse than the gallbladder attack itself. Thankfully, I was able to release some gas and the pain hasn't been back. I'm no longer taking pain meds.

One test that could help determine gallbladder function is the HIDA scan, which can give the diagnosis of biliary/gallbladder dyskinesia. It’s essentially the same symptoms as a gallstone attack but there are none present. Many folks go to the E.R with intense or dull pain in the upper right quadrant, get an ultrasound only to be sent home with more questions than answers because there are no stones. If you have little to no gallbladder function you will experience this and it’s the same outcome of removal that needs to happen.

Is it worth getting a cholecystectomy if you have a hyperkinetic gallbladder? I see a lot of people with high ejection refraction rates on HIDA scans above 80% getting theirs removed.

It really depends on the individual. If they are having very frequent pain episodes, the pain sounds very similar to gallbladder pain, other problems have been ruled out, then it would be something to consider. We know that patients who get their gallbladder out, but didn’t have gallstones, do have as much pain relief as those that do have gallstones. Thanks for the question!

@@robertisaac1286 Started off in Feb with tugging/pulling feeling in the lower sternum, then migrated to dull RUQ pain. My bowl movements went from bile dumping to constipation, lot so f gas and burping. In March things got worse 24 hours after my HIDA scan (EF 100%). The RUQ pain intensified and brought along nausea, I had no apatite, chills, felt like i had a softball of gas under my rib, felt very tender and beat up in there. Things got worse at night. I ended up losing 10 pounds in a week. This attack lasted a couple weeks and started to stabilize back into mild symptoms. I tried to eat healthy for a bit and cut fat as it was recommended. Few months later i had another attack, however this one was a little different. nausea and weight loss was replaced by burning pain in my side and pain in my lower right shoulder blade. This attack lasted about a week. I'm back to mild symptoms for now. Hope this helps ya.

Uhhhh…..this is similar to those people (who don’t live in the south) who say we should have our thermostats set to 82 in the soul-sucking heat and humidity in July. Just no. I’m having this procedure done next week. If my surgeon told me that I was only supposed to take Tylenol- I would cancel that immediately. At least if it blows - I’d get decent pain meds 🤷🏻‍♀️ Four holes through the abdominal wall and Tylenol is it?? Nahhhhhh…. I’m already freaking out about the first couple days of pain that I’ve heard horror stories about. It’s all I can do to not keep moving it back as it is Every medical professional freaks out whenever pain meds are mentioned as though we are all a bunch of junkies 🙄 No disrespect intended to you personally, doc, but that paper can take a flying leap 😂 I’d also suggest that the author of that paper try it for himself first. I guarantee you that any physician would make sure that their loved ones received pain meds for this procedure. Sounds a lot like the medical establishment’s version of “let them eat cake” 🤷🏻‍♀️

This also happened to me eight years ago with a hernia surgery. Another surgeon said it would be nothing. It took me 3 weeks to move without pain. I don’t care what the surgeon says. You’re delusional if you think some Tylenol is gonna help someone manage pain after surgery 😂. I mean it’s just as effective as taking it while you’re having all the symptoms before surgery which is zero. Have you not watched any of the videos made by the actual people who got the surgery? Most are miserable for weeks. It’s not just like a scrape or you had a small fall. You’re getting cut open to your insides and having an important organ cut out of you. You don’t just bounce back to being able to manage that pain with some Tylenol. Your body just went through a bunch of trauma, and Tylenol barely even works for a headache let alone surgery. I’m not trying to be mean or anything but I just got out of a pelvic laparoscopic surgery and that was excruciating. I now am having to get gallbladder surgery and if the pelvic one was that bad I can’t even imagine how bad this one is going to be. I just don’t think surgery should be downplayed especially by others who haven’t had the type of procedure. Tylenol isn’t a cure all and doctors need to understand that because even if this surgery is quicker it still is extremely painful
@RichHilsden

Thank you for your comment. I appreciate even the comments that criticize my content. I agree, that some people will need pain medicine stronger than Tylenol and advil. However most really do not. www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1072751518320386 In the above paper we show that with patient education and given the choice only half of patients choose to fill a prescription for an opiate pain medication. Thanks for the comment. And good luck with your upcoming operation.

I was in so much pain that I couldn't understand it. I had 2 c-sections, and the gallbladder surgery was worse than both. I had the surgery in 2013 laproscopicly, and still to this day, I have random burning pain in my upper right side. I had CT scans with contrast several times over the years because of the same symptoms. I had blood work, and also several sonograms too. Everything always came back okay. I do not know to this day why I still have random pain in my no gallbladder area???? It's terrible! The reason that I'm on here now is because, again I'm having pain in that area. It hurts. I hope your surgery goes better than mine. I'll say a prayer for you.🙏🙏🙏🙏

Oh and by the way, my surgeon saw how much pain I was in and couldn't understand it, and this was a week after my surgery at an office visit. Well Dr. Fine from Jefferson Hospital in West Mifflin, Pa.(Yes, that actually was his name)you are the surgeon, why in the world am I in so much pain, I was thinking. He ended up giving me a prescription for Demoral pills that I had to search several pharmacies to find, because it was unusual for them to stock that strong of a drug, at the time. (2013) It was so strong that I couldn't end up taking them. They made me so sick even though they took the pain away. I told him that I couldn't take them so he gave me the prescription Norco and those helped while I was healing.They weren't as strong, but I had to take Zofran to settle my stomach because I'm so sensitive to narcotic medication. So I agree, Tylenol isn't sh*t, especially in my case. Maybe for some, Tylenol and Advil help, but with my surgery those would have NEVER worked, and believe me I hate taking narcotics pills!! All they do is stop you up!!💩 😂 Sorry, Doctor Rich, just saying.😮😊

@@RichHilsden thank you for responding, I’m not trying to be mean or criticize in a bad way, but personally I just got this surgery yesterday and my body went into shock once I woke up in recovery. I was violently shaking because of being in so much pain the anesthesiologist and nurse had to medicate me 5 times. And monitor me for close to two hours. So personally no I do not understand how most people could be okay with Tylenol after that. Even had to take a trip to the ER today because the pain was so bad I couldn’t move or breathe well. Tylenol should not be considered as a main medication for surgical procedures to reduce pain. However it is good for inflammation and the swelling but it does not and will not help someone recover . In fact it’ll probably take longer for you to heal considering your body is in so much pain it’s traumatized.

2/12/2024 gallbladder removed. Was given 6 plus rounds of heavy-duty pain medications intravenously, including demerol, and nothing touched the pain. Sent home with hydrocodone. Took all doses. Nothing! No relief. Havent slept due to the severe site pain and stabbing knife pain that makes it near impossible to breathe. Keep drinking, walking, trying to blow the little ball thing they send you home with. Still can't hold it. No sleep yet and have to sit up even with pain. Only minimal relief is heat neck massager and ice packs on incisions. Saw dr today. He doesn't think its infection just post operative pain. Child birth twice, and several laproscopic surgeries were more tolerable than this. Dr sent me home with tramodol. We'll see what happens. 1st dose was at 2. Didn't do anything. Im only 5'2" the amount of drugs they've given me should have knocked me on my ass or at least took the edge of the pain. I guess im just a horse. 😢A miserable one.
