Today we return to a format from the earliest days of the channel and answer some frequently asked questions on collecting watches. Is collecting "affordable" watches a mistake? Would it be better to sell an entire collection of affordable watches in exchange for just one grail watch?
In this video I aim to help Daniel, a member of the good Gentry, who emailed me for advice. After collecting watches for 2 years his current daily favorite is the Glycine Combat Sub GL0185. He wants to sell his large collection to buy his dream watch - a Rolex Submariner, reference 16610 - which is approximately the same value. What should he do?
Join me for some classic Gentry watch collection talk, including advice for Daniel, and a few things one should take into account when contemplating such a big decision, from financial considerations to seller’s remorse.
To get $100 off $1000+ and then $250 off $2500+ on your next luxury watch, use the code "URBANGENTRY" at:

Daniel should NOT sell his "cheaper" pieces. I've had 4 Rolexes over the last 40 years; a 70's red-letter Sea Dweller, a 2 tone Sub and 2 GMT 2s. 3 were sold, one stolen. Now I'm down to one, a Sinn EZM 3F and very happy to not be chasing grails anymore. My late father once told me that "Most of the time, the wanting is more fun than the having." Now, at 66 years old, I realize how right he was.

I follow a similar philosophy, buy what I truly want rather than buy what strikes my fancy today. To achieve this I tend to not buy on impulse, but take months deciding on what I want. Yesterday I ordered a Seagull 1963 sapphire, I had been looking at them since last Jan/Feb and only yesterday decided I actually want to try one.

I always say “never finance a hobby” so I buy what I can, save for what I want and when I look into my WatchBox I see a collection that started when I could hardly afford to buy one to ones that are worth thousands. Each one I got to remind me of a particular moment or event, each one I researched and read up on and determined which one I wanted. I wear them all, I don’t worry about the odd bump or scratch as they just add to the story behind each one. I always tell people, when they ask, to buy what they like, never worry about what others think and just buy what they enjoy. It’s their collection after all, it’s reflective of their tastes and their growth as a collector.

@@wayneturner1336 That's the whole idea, and I agree with it. Buy with the heart, not the head, or you'll just find yourself not wearing that "investment piece", leaving it in a safe somewhere, or selling it. Just like classic cars. Why buy and not drive it? That's what it was made for.

just keep that same notion for replicas and clones then please. It's what i can afford. It's what I like. For someone like me, i could never justify buying a time piece for more than a thousand dollars. It makes no sense to me why someone would buy a watch like a tudor that is an homage to a rolex, that still costs thousands of dollars., when there are high tier clones that often have better movements or the same eta movements you see in "affordable" watches that only cost $500. I'm ranting a bit, but i feel like many people think the way you do, until it comes to clones. The watch snobs love shitting on clones and anyone who wears them .

My approach: Set your goal, save your money, do your research, enjoy the journey. I recently saved for then bought a Grand Seiko GMT Quartz. After dropping over $3k on a watch, I was expecting buyer’s remorse. It didn’t happen. Because I took my time, did the research and had more than enough money saved up completely separate from my “responsible money” so I could get the GS and still had enough for another watch. I was in this predicament several years when I was wearing a lot of fashion watches. I sold them all to buy a Rolex Sub. Once I purchased my first Rolex I quickly found myself owning 4 of them. As I learned more about watches I moved into more expensive brand like Patek, AP and a few others. Fast forward to today I reduced my collection to just a few grail pieces and several unique boutique pieces. I said all that to say watch collections are ever evolving. Buy what you like, wear it, enjoy it when you tire of it move in to something else.

I was a one watch guy. I've always wanted a high end watch, so I bought one, when I turned 30 (like someone I know), and it was a dress watch, fitting for my every day wear, since my work requires a suit and a tie, on an every day basis. And I thought that was it. But then, I needed a diving watch, for the seaside and vacation. Then a beater, for around the house. Then a chronograph caught my eye. Then I needed a digital beater for the gym... And so on and so forth. One thing is for sure, a true watch lover, can't stop on a one watch, even if it's A.Lange & Sohne minute repeater.

Hi TGV Tough question. There is a kind of mid term strategy that might satisfy many people though. It just requires you being very conscious about what kind of guy/girl you are. If you’re of the formal kind, buy an expensive dress watch and some more affordable pieces for sports, work purposes and so on. If you’re the sporty kind buy an expensive diver and some cheaper ones for dress, work etc. You get the general idea I suppose😂 This way you get to have your grail watch for the purpose where you’ll appreciate it the most and at the same time enjoy a collection... Not that I’ve been able to live up to this strategy - I generally use too much money on watches😏 Keep up the good work👍

Exactly, I'm a formal person so an enormous dive watch on me would be absolutely ridiculous! Almost all of my watches are vintage and would be considered dress watches. But sports watches didn't exist in the 20s-40s, the average everyday watch from that time is now considered dressy.

Budget pieces, or even fashion pieces have their benefits. They can be more creative and expressive while the higher end watches tend to stick to a lot of templates, hence you see an oris, an omega, an Breitling and many of them look more similar than separate. I have a $20k collection of watches and my latest purchase which I've worn for the last 4 weeks straight was a skagen cheapo watch I got for $45 on ebay. It has a sandblasted grey/blue dial I find mesmerizing on a yellowy/tan strap. Perfect for summer.

Great video as always , love the channel. I'm 22 and I just bought my fifth and most expensive watch yet, a Seiko Presage Blue moon with open heart which costed me around 500$ , double the price of my previous watch. People have asked me why am I buying cheaper watches like Seikos and not buy an expensive one like a Tag Heuer . To prove them that price does not matter , I let them take a guess of the price of the Presage and everyone guesses wrong , thinking it's a 1000-1500$ watch . After I reveal the actual price , they never question me again . I wear it with the same pride as I wear my Casio a164.

I would definitely miss changing watches on a daily basis. A friend of mine is saving up for a Rolex as his first mechanical watch and I´m urging him to start with a Hamilton or something else in the 500-Euro range to get used to the concept of a mechanical watch before spending 10k on his grail watch.

@P M B I don't agree with buying on credit if you do not have the money to back it up. But if you have the cash in the bank and have the option of interest free credit (and the self control not to spend the cash on something else) then why not make a little interest for yourself. I wouldn't do 48 months though - 12 months would be better. Of course bit of a mute point right now as interest rates are so low as to be pointless. Personally, I pay cash for everything. Houses, cars, watches etc..... If the SHTF nobody can take anything from me.

I can't afford a Sub, so definitely I am for an affordable watch collection. I have loved watches since the 3rd grade (My mum gifted me with a Mickey Mouse Quartz watch) when I had no idea about luxury watches or movements. So I love watches for what they are, not as status symbols or investments. Digital and Quartz watches make me as giddy as my Autos, but I DO aspire to own a luxury watch someday. All in due time. By my humble experience, it is very easy to fall madly in love for a watch and maybe in two months the fire will fade away, because you rediscovered some other whatch that you did not pay attention well before. One should always meditate for a long time about a piece - if it doesnt come off of your head for that period, then it is the right choice to purchase.

True, but that is why I buy pre owned, so I don't get big burns, in case of a resale. I've owned 3 Seamasters and 2 speedys (I have only 1 seamaster now), and 3 different Hublots (I have 1 now), in different periods of time, since I needed experience to figure out which refference I really like. In my experience, wearing a watch for some time is the only solid method, for figuring out, what you really like. And most people are affraid of selling, and trading, I was too, but after a while, you get the hang of it, plus, you get the chance to get many pieces through your hands. For example, I have a 5 piece collection, but over the five years I have been collecting, I owned 13 different watches, most of them in 2-5k price range.
