So Should you buy a 2023 Jeep Wrangler 4Xe? For the longest time the Jeep Wrangler has been an off roading icon. A no compromise truck that was fully focused on its sole purpose.
But now we have a plug in model of this popular truck and in this video we will take a close look at this specific model to see if it's good or not.
We'll start with a thorough technical review talking about it's hybrid and plug in system then we'll take a look underneath the truck.
Then we'll take a tour outside and inside it. Talk about some things we like and some things we dislike then a final verdict.

I own a Wrangler before overlanding became a thing. I absolutely agree with you it should not cost $50-70k for a Wrangler. People used to buy them for offroading and they are super simple to work on. Now its become something else.

Even a BASIC Wrangler is pathetically overpriced. When I was a teen in the late 1990s, a Wrangler was barely $17-19k. Now they're THREE times the price. Nope, not worth it no matter what Wrangler cultists say. And Wrangler fans are unreasonable, don't try to argue with them. They plug their ears and go naananananannaaaaaah! I ain't listening. Wrangler Wrangler Wrangler all the way even if it costs $100,000.

My wife bought one of these. Coming from my 1990 ranger I was not sure I would like it. I actually came around to it and like it quite a bit. I figured it was complicated but I couldn’t appreciate just how complicated until I saw this video. As a guy who usually turns a wrench in his own cars, the plug in Hydrids are something I’m not interested in maintaining, so I am glad she got the 7 yr warranty. Great channel and video I am subscribed now.

Watching you for years! Excellent comprehensive videos! Especially Toyota general reviews on what to buy or not to buy from reliability prospective! Those are indeed unique insides, not many channels do, from a professional Toyota man. Thanks for all this work! I think intended audience are the drivers and DIY repair men, like myself, and cars enthusiasts, cause those people after purchasing a car will be laying under it and cursing themselves while bumping in the multiple shortcomings most of the modern cars have. At least watching these kind of reviews they'll be warned on all those good and bad things coming down the road. Again there is no so many channels like this, it's either detailed ext/int and driving review or manuals how to fix and mod things. Was considering buying old TJ a few years back, as a true 4 wheel drive, not abused in original state, cold not find in a decent shape for the price, ended up buying 10 y old Grand Vitara V6, with low milage and decent shape and never regretted since: from inside has everything, and still can deliver mild off roading, when needed.

This review is refreshingly thorough and uniquely candid. My jaundiced eye opinion stems from 55 years of wheeling Utah slickrock and Colorado peaks; repairing inevitable trail breakdowns and getting out. Steve Rowe pretty well summed up future prospects for what owners of such complex, off-road cargo will be dealing with after the factory is released from its warranty obligations.

My wife and I were in town the other day and my wife mentioned to me how dirty this one particular Jeep was going around a corner while we were at a red light. I glanced at it and it had mud on the roof and the entire side was cover in dried on mud. There was only the windows, lights and brake lights were cleaned off and driven. Looking closer it was just a standard 2 door Wrangler probably last generation but that was hard to tell as the mud covered everything. I mentioned back to the wife aha someone using his Jeep for its intended purpose.

I own one and i go off-roading with it. it is absolutely an amazing experience when you crawl in silence or when you descend down a hill with 4low Manual 2 and max regen, you would not really to brake. While it is true that there is a fear of my jeep breaking down in the middle of nowhere, it is also true if it is just a regular rubicon. the extra weight is indeed a problem, but only if the type of off-roading you do is crazy rock-crawling that requires 40-inch tires.. otherwise the weight issue is not really an issue when in fact it actually lowers your center of gravity. if you are an actual overlander, there is even a possibility of tapping the 17K high voltage battery with alot of your everyday home appliances... you would need some wires and a 2000W inverter.. there are youtude videos of this as well as on the forum. speaking of gas mileage... oh well.. it's still a jeep.. go get the tesla. i live in the city, i never fill any gas until i go to trails 2-3 times a month. This is a very fun vehicle.

There’s just something about riding around with the doors and top off of a Jeep. I own a Tundra and the wife has a GX460, I also have a 2004 TJ with the 4.0 that is the beach rig for the summertime. The kids always want to ride in the Jeep never the truck or the suv because it is so much fun to ride in. I usually don’t drive it in the winter because it doesn’t have a top but on days it gets in the 60’s here in SC I always pull it out of the garage and drive to to work. Every time I hop in the drivers seat it reminds me of being 16 again driving my old 84 CJ7 around.

Add pickups to that list of status vehicles. When I was in high school, you could get a basic 1/2 ton for less than $20,000. I think my old Chevy was $17,000, brand new. I have had several Jeeps starting with a 1990 Islander, its great to hear a good grounded review from a non-jeep but knowledgeable guy. I think someone needs to take him for a ride in a '06 TJ to realize how posh this Jeep is, interior and ride would probably be amazing in comparison. The issue he has nailed is the 70K price tag. Also, I have been driving Chevy Volt's since 2013, the ultimate PHEV which has pioneered alot of this tech like the battery conditioning methods and the electric assist steering. I hope Chrysler bought one to examine and improve upon instead of re-inventing the wheel. Great video and I enjoy your content!

Great review overall, I bought one to take my family around as well as off road. I owned two Jeep Grand Cherokees before and this is a whole different world when it comes to off-roading, extremely capable. One thing to understand about the 4xe is the gas mileage will appear about the same as a non 4xe on the sticker. If you drive it on a long trip it’s about the same. However, at least 80-90% of my driving is on electric, I can go nearly a month without using gas. I just plug it in inside my garage so I can easily get 50-75 miles a day on electric by charging wherever it’s parked (full charge in 2 hours). Don’t try to run the gas tank close to empty though, you will run out of gas just before you hit the E (then you can use the battery). Other pluses, i get free charging at many locations and stores (no one is giving away free gas). The sound inside with the hard top is just fine, I’ve never noticed Tire noise and the on road steering is plenty good. Understand what you are buying this for, adventure, going places you would never otherwise go. Its like a mini tank, well designed and overall one of the most fun vehicles I’ve owned!

Roughly a year ago I was in the market for a Gladiator/Wrangler, Mojave/Rubicon trim. I took both for a test drive and couldn't believe how underpowered it was, not to mention the availability wasn't good. I decided to wait and recently picked up the Willy's 4XE Wrangler. The power was night and day difference! and maybe it's due to the center of gravity on the 4XE but it seemed to handle much better as well. MPG is terrible on a regular Jeep and with the 4XE it's waaaay better. We'll see how it fairs further down the road but initial impressions are much better than I got with the non hybrid models.

I have a 2021 4xE (4 by E) and it definitely outperforms my previous Jeeps in power and handling. Love it especially the horsepower and torque. 375 horsepower and 475 ft lb of torque. I get gasoline every other month and it is a Jeep not a truck. As far as materials, it's pretty nice leather and a great interior and people of normal size don't have the problems getting in and out of the back seat as you mentioned.

I have a 2023 Rubicon 4XE as well. I think he got confused with the battery location though. It's actually in the inside built in under the rear seat to keep it protected. I also get gas every other month and I commute 20 to 25 miles a day for work on pure electric, and I will run the gas engine to refresh the fuel / oil on the weekends for longer commutes. With the Hp and Torque this thing is in a league of its own. I know he seems to be troubled by the price of the 4XE, but you get a $7500 rebate that applies to a lease on the spot which I got, then I turned around and refinanced it at $56k. He really should go look at the price of the 392 lol. But to compare it to a GX460, those get horrendous MPG. Not even as capable as a Rubicon 4xe. He should look at the cost of ownership of a GX460, maintenance costs, fuel consumption/spending etc etc then do a proper comparison to a 4xe. Not to mention the high fuel prices we just saw at almost $6 a gallon which has came down to $4 ish.. What's not to say that we will not see those prices again soon or even higher. The people that do buy the 4xe, mostly get it for the MPG savings during breaks of off-roading. The 4xe doesn't have any competition, it's a PHEV that excels at everything off road while being able to use it as a daily commuter on pure electric. Even when the battery runs out, it then turns into a pure hybrid automatically and still gives me 26mpgs. On Electric, I'm at 49 to 51 E-Mpg. Great review, but to see how many Wranglers are out on the road today says alot. But he was right about the back seat getting in and out. That latch has gotten me a few times and I'm fit lol

He did okay at explaining the technology but I don't think he's all that versed, he called it a truck and he didn't even know that it's called a 4xE (4xE) I bought the Sahara high altitude and this Jeep does everything on those technical trails up in Colorado that my 2013 Jeep did but it does it better and with more power. The fact that they now have all-wheel drive added to the four-wheel drive mix makes it a lot better driving through snow and rain at highway speed than my old one.

I have a 22 4xe, and I'm a Realtor in mountainous area of the country. I can't get stuck or break down. And when gas ⛽️ hit nearly $4 a gallon I needed something that I wasn't spending $100 every few days on gas. I landed on the 4xe, the other choice was the Volvo plug in electric. It gets 40+ miles on straight electric. I decided on the 4xe Wrangler because of the terrain and snow that I deal with. Now there's Cherokee 4Xe. But I love the the Wrangler, my clients love it too. I chose the Sahara because the ride is so much better than Rubicon and I'm not rock climbing. Yes I get that the nicer trim is $60,000+. But you don't need to spend that, get a Willie's. If you were referring to the SOT model in the video that may be louder due to the roof. I've never ridden in one to compare. Third thing is the federal tax credit. I got $7500 off. Yes, I still paid a lot, but nowhere near 70k for my loaded Rubicon.

Enjoyed your review of the 4(by)e, also saw your XC90 review and really liked it. I’ve owned my Rubicon 4xe since May 2021. I love my Jeep, but I use my Rubicon for what it was intended for, rock crawling and back country driving. It is not a comfortable, easy every day driver. Get a Sahara, get a Willys, don’t get a Rubi, unless you are going to use it for back country driving. Mine has now been highly modified, 3-1/2” lift, 35” tires on wider wheels, adjustable reservoir shocks, full body armor underneath, winch, real rock rails, etc. The torque on the 4xe “amazes” old school jeepers, even when compared to the 392. I get my torque at 1/2 RPM. It is awesome for rock crawling. But you pay a price, with an extra 700 lbs of weight, plus you have to learn to “two” pedal in obstacles to keep constant torque on the tires. BTW, the battery is under the back seat and the gas tank is only 2 gals less than the standard tank. With the stock 33” tires I got 21 miles of all electric range, with the 35”, I get 19 miles. When solely driving around town, and frequent charging, I’ve seen high 30MPG. But real MPG with the engine only is about 19.

I an 72 years old and have a 2021 Jeep Mojave and I love it. I drive 200 miles up comfortably up north and have no problems making phone calls. I have taken it off road and love it there as well. The problem with some is they buy a jeep and they want the ride of a Cadillac. This is a jeep it’s not for everyone. I knew what I was getting when I bought it, and it’s exactly what I expected.

I have this exact same spec (except I have body coloured fenders), and I couldn't be happier. This is my family car and we've had it for 10 month and over 12,000 kms. Yes, you mentioned some of the compromises but surprisingly for how capable, reliable, and efficient this has been for our specific use case, it's perfect! We plow through the Canadian blizzards with ease, I'm averaging 1,300 kms per tank of gas (since most of my driving is within the city), and my kids know its an event when we step inside our Rubicon. Best of all, the wifey loves it and enjoys driving it too. I installed a nice pair of SB side steps and no one has complained about getting in or out. We have a carseat in the rear with no issues too. The ONLY thing I'll complain about is a sway bar disconnect issue I've recently had - I can't seem to get it to disconnect; it just says 'service sway bar system' and my dealership doesn't know what to do. Otherwise my family and I love this thing and I hope it stays reliable for several years to come. Thank you for the excellent in depth review!

I wanted a Jeep JK Rubicon back in 2016. My friend bought one and whenever we went anywhere on the road he would have to saw back and forth on the steering wheel trying to keep it going straight. Its road manners are horrible. I figured out over time that it was more off road than I would ever use and not very good on the road. I eventually bought a Toyota 4runner off road premium with kdss. It's more off road capable than I'll probably ever need and it has good on road manners. It also has comfortable back seats with lots of leg room. Plus there's the Toyota reliability. Both my friend and my niece regret their wrangler purchases and would rather have something with better on road manners.

I recently rented a Jeep Compass 4xe. I was eager to test it. The car didn’t have good power. It doesn’t have good fuel economy (for road trips) and as an EV the power and range were lack luster. In fact, with a small fuel tank and small battery you’ll find yourself looking for gas stations all the time. I found that to me, it doesn’t do anything well but hopefully the wrangler is a much better option.

I'm a JLU-Rubicon owner with the 2.0L. I love it. I couldn't get myself to go 4XE for the price tag and how many EV miles you get. If it was 60-100 miles on EV range for the price tag of a 4XE Rubicon I'd do it... After watching this video this looks all complicated. Anything that would go wrong, would be high labor costs at a stealership. Interested to see how this progress throughout the years to come.

I just bought a 2023 Jeep Serria 4xe, and the sticker price was $63k, and holy cow, still no power seats, thank god in 2024, they will have them. The 4xe only gets you 32 miles of juice, and that's it! It takes 13hrs to charge on 110v or spend $600 to get a level 2 charger, and then you can fast charge it in 2 hrs. Thank god I was given $ 13k in rebates, and I was thankful my 2021 Jeep was worth more than I owed on it. I have only owned my new Jeep for 2 weeks, and when my lease is up in 2 years I most likely will jump out of this 4xe, unless it gives you more electric range, and I can find more charging stations.

I'm on 9000 mile total, 1800 of those gas. I love this vehicle. And it's now the number one selling hybrid. Sahara because I'm off road, but not rocks and I need an Explorer ride. I need 4WD. If your stuck in traffic jam the AC and Heat still work. You can't compare to a Honda or most other SUVs, It's a different market. I didn't get lockers or the retractable top. I have never heard the electric power steering make a sound. Take yours for service. I get 24mpg gas, 99+ Electtic. There is no drift with Sahara. If I was going to do it again perhaps Grand Cherokee 4Xe which is also rugged. So far it's very heavy duty and you need only rust proof the frame, it's body is all Aluminum. I like the rear mount tire, it stays good. I purchased the service plan. I love the Ford Service Plan, but yet to use the Jeep plan. One complaint, it came with a tow package but not a brake controller. It's another $245 on sale with Mopar. It's got a ton of power, and speed. It's competition is the Bronco Raptor. But this baby gets 24 mpg gas and tax credit is $7500 for now. 8 year battery Warrenty. It's made in Toledo, Ohio. The material is meant to be rained on, sun resistant. There is no roof most summers. It's very functional for those that buy it. It meets their needs. I have watched so many reviews on the 4xe, I would never get the Lexus GX. But if I did or compard it to a Cherokee And it is the coolest thing on the planet. I comprised nothing. 24 MPG

For those persons who want to buy a 4x4 truck just off-roading, don’t buy the 4xe, buy a gas Wrangler is you are going to be most of the time off-roading. Thanks for an honest review of an honest truck. Perhaps there’s only one other name in automotive world that’s just as iconic as the Jeep. That’s Porsche 911. Both have had small, constant improvements over decades, yet they deviated from their original design and iconic looks very little. You can make the old argument about Porsche, the German and Jeep, the Chrysler not being the most reliable cars (especially from a Toyota mechanic mindset) but there has to be a level of respect for them sticking to their roots and not losing their face in the sea of modern transportation, that (at least by looks) is a lot of the same, badged differently.
