I have had two Range Rovers one early Jeep Cherokee two WJ Grand Cherokees. The Range rover suspensions failed over and over, so I went the Cherokee route. The early one was OK so I upgraded to the WJ model. Both of those had injector and head problems. Whilst the last one was been repaired I got a Terracan as a stop gap. That was three years ago It's had a timing belt and alternator. I would not go back to the other marques again. The Terracan is a brilliant tow vehicle it is very capable off road. I love my Terracan.

Sometimes regret selling my 2004 Terracan, it took me everywhere 2.9 diesel manual, easy to live with, allways started even after being stood for 3 months it started 1st time, i did change the wheels & tyres & it was in great condition all round, easy to maintain, work on & fix, i prefer this shape to the later shape, value for money 4x4 workhorse.

Got a 2.9L limited 2007 just under 3 years ago, had a whiny rear lsd diff (common problem) which was sorted by putting the correct lubricant in. The alternator caused some really weird fault indications, but never stopped working, replaced it for £100. Anyone who slags these off, has never driven one for any length of time, it will go anywhere ( if the wife stops screaming)

I have a 2007 Terracan SLX Auto (2.9 CRDi), bought from single owner with 180,000kms on it, mechanically perfect. I previously had a 2001 Landcruiser Prado V6 Petrol, which I racked 300,000kms (bought at 100,000kms) before getting rid of it. I have added after-market suspension and it has been lifted slightly as a result, I've put larger off-road tyres on it and off-road it handles as well as the Landcruiser, infact with those modification it looks like a LandCruiser. It has a bit more torque than that particular year and model Landcruiser as well. On the highway at 115km/h it cruises at 2200rpm, which is comfortable. Not sure what the complaint about the horsepower is about. This thing is gruntier than most of its competitors of the same year, I have no trouble getting to speed quickly. Not sure if the engine changed between 2004-2007, but the 2007 SLX model that I have is rated at 161hp, which is more than grunty enough for most of us. I know the equivalent prado was a 97kw engine, this is a 130kw engine. It is loud, but being a 4x4 enthusiast I'm pretty used to it. Like the review states, on the highway, it sounds and feels like driving a 90s 4x4. Though the power steering is more capable and there's perhaps less white-knuckling at speed. This review doesn't really cover the 4x4 capabilities and they compare it to other "SUVs" and comment almost exclusively on on-road driving, comparing it to the Sorrento for example, which is unfair. Really, they are a great buy if you plan to do some off-roading and they are very cheap. They are more comparable to 90s LandCruisers than 2010s SUVs for sure, but they can be had, with low Kms (if you can find them) for less than $7000 AUD, which is a bargain and leaves money in the pocket for all the modifications you may wish to make. I'm purchasing a new vehicle soon and the plan isn't to retire the Terracan at all. It's a great car, but do not buy it for driving around the suburbs/city. It's car that likes open roads and dirt tracks. The absolute worst thing about this car is the roof rails. With a combined max weight of 36kg. Doesn't matter what bars you put on there, that's the total limit. As a result, increasingly popular roof-tents are out of the question. I have managed to fit a 270 degree awning, lightbar and I keep a spare tyre up there, as the larger tyres (265 70 R16) A/Ts do not fit in the undercarriage wheel well. That said, if you can move the spare, you can also then fit a long-range fuel tank, so silver linings :). When I'm parked up and camping, I stick my solar panels up there. Anyway, good used car for the money, just stay away from the petrol models, they are weak, slow and endurance is much worse. Personally, with Landcuisers costing 70k or more, I get scared taking them places where I take much cheaper used vehicles cheerfully. I don't need heated seats and giant android displays. I need a car that I can take out bush and beat around without worrying about sunk cost.

thanks for the info! I was looking at some V6 models on carsales but i guess ill steer clear of them. I don't know why though, but almost all the TDI models seem to be in Victoria? no idea why that is lol
@wildkidau
@wildkidau 3 жыл бұрын
@@noobdudegaming1018 I had never even seen one of these in flesh until I moved to Regional Victoria. There are quite a few on the road. Since I posted this reply I've fitted a bullbar and some extra lights. And it's done some more KMs off-road. It's very capable, I couldn't be happier. I've become a bit more courageous with the roof rack, now fitted whispbars, rhino rack tray and another awning. I've had no issues with some pretty crazy wind. But do keep the official limit in mind and be wary if you do find one of these and decide to pack a bit on the roof as I have. All up, I spent $7000 on the vehicle and everything, including snorkel, bullbar, roof rack and lights I've spent an extra $7000. Considering what a used, unmodified Prado or Pajero costs. I'm very happy.

It has to be said Hyundai just keep on improving, they have had a presence in the UK since the 70s. In the last few years, they have made huge quality improvements, my current Hyundai has a ten-year anti-corrosion warranty which is not a bad thing to have, but most of all it is reliable so what's not to like.

Great video. I have one of these and agree with everything you said. I have it because it’s such a good tow vehicle and it pulls my twin axle caravan on idle on flat. Lots of low rev torque and it’s large weight means it doesn’t get moved around by the tow load. Everyone I meet that had one of these for towing loved them. I go 50-60 mph on tow. Just don’t ever hit 70 in any situation as it feels not designed for it! I have got better mpg than u suggest with motorway driving. Mine is 140k miles and no engine issues, just usual replacements. Turning circle is like a bus.

Sorry to say, but I do not quite agree with you on a number of points. I have had my Terracan for quite a few years now. Sure, there are better vehicles on the market, but then you need to fork out so much more money. I have had the suspension jacked, fitted spacers which helped a lot with the body-roll, qand added a few other extras. In fact, with a bull bar, suspension, some fat mud terrain tyres, snorkel and roof-rack, mine gets a lot of attention, and a lot of positive comments. personally, I prefer 'functional'. A real 4X4 should be functional, without the owner constantly having to shit himself about scratching or chipping the paintwork. These new fancy 4x4's are just city cars with bragging rights, and not much more. Not only does the vehicle go well, I have had to spend very little on maintenance. In fact, considering how technically advanced some of these new vehicles are, and considering the hideous price tag, I would personally rather just keep spending money on mine. I use it for carting tourists on game-viewing safaris, and by the end of a heavy off-road trip, I get a lot of compliments - even from guys who own newer model Land Cruisers. Not sure where the ones in the UK were made, but I have no complaints about rust, and I live on the beach where everything rusts. It's merely a question of hosing the vehicle down once or twice a week. If you're thinking of buying a Terry, look for a decent one like the one in this video, and you will not go wrong. These cars are legend in many places across the globe. Look up the numerous facebook groups of Terracan owners, and see how many passionate lovers of this vehicle there are. You will be surprised.

I ran a £1700 one of these for 10 months when we'd sold one house and were yet to buy another. It towed our home (caravan), took us and the dogs on the beach, had no issue with snow and was very reliable overall. We did 10k in it and sold it for £1300. One common issue with these that is worth mentioning is a faulty brake pedal sensor. This obviously triggers the brake lights but will also cut engine power under acceleration, because the car thinks you accidentally pressed both pedals at once. The part was about £40 from Hyundai and it's one bolt and a connector to change. Albeit you have to lie upside down in the footwell.

They did fit a 3.5 v6 petrol but it was never sold in the UK. I've got one of these as a workhorse, getting logs, towing, tip run and camping. These are simple solid and reliable. Easy to work on. The advantage of no 3rd row seats is the load area is huge. 1000l with seats up, seats down and forward its like a small van in the back, vauxhall combo sort of size. Off road ability is equal to anything below a Defender or early disco. But this won't break down like them. Its more farm yard than Chelsea tractor. Loads of plusher 4x4's but the bang for buck that the Terracan offers is incredible. You probably shouldn't buy it as the main family car, but as a 2nd vehicle for a specific purpose, that you don't want to tie loads of money up in. The only thing I would advise you walk away from is if the service history does not show regular fuel filter changes. Not changing the fuel filter annually as a minimum will cause the injectors to fail.

Must've been a very popular truck for those, wanting something more agricultural but not willing to stretch the budget to a Land Cruiser. Who said off-roaders have gone soft? Terracan is proof that the macho 4x4 still exists, and if you need a workhorse rather than fashion accessory, it fits the bill. It's cheap to buy, stacked with kit and quite capable in the rough stuff. And used prices are enticing, making it a great second car for towing horseboxes or caravans. On the down side it's not particularly nice to drive, nor comfortable.

I just got one of these as my car was stolen over the weekend and needed something cheap to get me around while the insurance is sorted. Originally I went to test drive a Honda CRV which was pretty battered and didn't drive particularly well with some turbo whine. My choice with the limited budget I had was either a couple of rubbish Ford Focus (2005 - 2008), Clio, Smart Car or this so I went for it as it has high spec and the boot is big enough to put a washing machine upright without folding the seats down lol Drive isnt amazing and its hard work parking around town but its growing on me!

It’s the precious metals that is inside cat that’s where the money is the older ones are much better than newer ones. Toyota Prius & old Hondas are also on the hit list I’ve been a victim just like yourself with some of my cars

Hello from Finland! Been thinking of a ”cheap” (10-20k€) 4x4 for me since here it is snowy and the road to my cabin is awful for a non-4x4 car... yes I’m the same guy from instagram, haha. Thanks for the videos, keep them coming!

I'd buy a Range Rover personally but it depends on the prices in your location. Might be better to go for an XC60 or XC90. The AWD ix35 isn't bad either if you get a high spec model

High Peak Autos Thank you for the reply! Yes I want a Range Rover so bad for I’d have to shell out like 30k+ for a decent one. Finland is the worst country in the world to be a car lover! :( Volvos are plentiful and cheap though. But like every other car is a Volvo on the road. I have a Volvo V60 right now, it’s great but it’s so boring. Also, only fwd. Subaru’s are cheap and plentiful too. I know lot’s of people who have one.

The indicator on the right side is a right hand drive quirk, just like Japanese cars. In Korea all cars, including the Terracan, have indicators on the left of the steering column.

The things that go wrong on these are the Delphi injectors and the rear LSD diff axle. They are also based on a mk2 Shogun/Pajero like the Galapa or whatever its called. The Aisin 4 speed auto is the same one as found in the early auto Sorento's and is a very strong auto box. I think the Sorento of the same era is the better buy with a better engine (2.5crdi also based on a Mitsubishi engine, but with timing chain and improved head gasket/strength, surprising that the Terracan didn't have that engine really) but the Terracan is roomier and more serious looking. The only cheap ladder chassis 4x4 like this now is the Ssangyong Rexton. Maybe Great Wall will bring one of their SUVs over in the near future. Its a shame that almost everything is monocoque now.

During these times of doom and gloom this video really made me chuckle in a perverse sort of way, when I heard you mentioned that someone had stolen a catalyst off a 16 year old vehicle, just think about it for a moment,;- it just seems a really strange thing to do, maybe it’s desperation, still strange though.😂

I had a Terracan, i had a lot of issues with him !!! Brakes (I run without brakes on an emergency stop on the highway !!! ), injection has been replaced, turbo dies, and fuel pump who has been totally desintagrated and some metal when into cylinders !!! And that in less than 100000km and 3 years !!! The worth car I ever bought....

I have a 2005 terracan and its a 7 seater I love it its the 2.9l deisel 5 speed manual had it nearly 4yrs hubby very handy and has done a bit of motor work but we only paid $9300 my deisel economy is absolutely amazing very cheap to run cheap 4 cylinder rego I kinda think it's kinda small on the inside but I've had 4 kids with this car the back seats are so easy just pull them down off the side and I like the big grey sides on the outside I reckon its saved me many dents on the actual metal color from other cars at the shops and I think it has plenty of power since our other cars are the slow as landcruiser and hilux

brutally honest review Matt. I'll be amased if you'll sell it, but probably you wont; maybe you'll buy an old cottage in the countryside and you will need it there :) the looks of it aren't that bad actually. They look ruff enough to call it a masculine farmers car. When you get the chance, and if you know anything about them, I am dead curious about the Kia Sorento 2010 year model. If they are still reliable as they were, if they offer a comfortable ride and still being capable off roading. Cheers and have a great day! Thanks for the vid again and again.

Palladium used to be relatively cheap at a few hundred dollars and ounce. Now it’s worth almost double the price of gold. Old catalytic converters contained a lot of palladium.

The reason it looks like an old shogun is because it is exactly that. Another tie up with mitsubishi in there long relationship! The engine also has a common oil pump failure that obviously causes seizure so keep an eye out for a flickering oil light on the dash.
