If you have ever looked for some new suspension for your car, you have definitely seen that there are many options out there. With that, you see prices ranging from $300 - $3,000. Why? What is the difference? Are the more expensive coilovers really worth it? Today Alex goes over exactly what those questions. Comparing the Tein street Basis to the KW V2, Alex breaks down the pros and cons of each system.

It’s not even about hanging with the big bois. Lol. Sometimes a coil over that costs a bit more will sustain a longer life and a bit more abuse. Don’t cheap out on parts like brakes and coils mate, you’ll regret it later on down the line. Even if your strapped for cash, that more expensive part might last longer and be more durable.

G35 in the background representing! I have KW v3's on my G35, they come with a lifetime warranty and they have a repair facility in California. If anything ever goes wrong, send them in and they send you back a new set for free. Being able to control compression and rebound allows you to have best of both worlds. I say put whatever you want on your car and build your car to suit your own budget and style.. Don't let people peer pressure you into thinking you have to buy the most expensive thing on the market. I'd say 90% of us just want our cars to look cool and never be near a race track. For driving around town the budget wheels and suspension are 100%.

If you live in place where it snows in the winter and they spread salt on the streets I recommend you run coilover bags. Literally waterproof bags that protect the coilovers from all the salt, dirt, etc. I run them on my cars and when the time comes to make any ride height adjustments the threads and everything are always nice and clean. I just spray everything with wd40 before closing the bags and it will look brand new next time you open it. All the best! Stay safe!

One thing that people tend to overlook is cheap kits sometimes wear out fast or are easy to cause them to leak when installing them. Also almost every adjustment goes out of spec faster with a cheap coil over.

For the street, I found zero performance gains going to coilovers over Sprint lowering springs and performance shocks upgrade. In fact, the countless of settings for spring preloads, damping, rebound, and height could do more harm on street performance than simple springs and shocks. From my experience building cars, what hurts high end coilovers performance on the street and sometimes on the track is the stiff spring rates. A car that's too bouncy can upset the balance and driver confidence even on a fairly smooth track. If budget isn't a concern for me for street builds, I would probably get coilovers with custom valving on the softest side and very soft Sprint springs.This way I get all the features of the coilovers without the harshness.
@Eratiik
@Eratiik 5 жыл бұрын
I couldn’t agree with this more! I have a e46 330i with a spring yellow shock combo from Koni. Fantastic handling and keeps the car flat in both daily town driving and more ‘spirited 😏’ driving out of town or on open roads. The harshness that comes with a lot of coils can be a pain to deal with on the daily. The spring shock combo gave me exactly what I wanted with my e46. Gave me the low I was wanting, extra handling and a better feeling without the harsh ride and stiffness that comes from some coils. For daily’s that won’t see that track but will still get driven somewhat hard for open roads, the spring/shock combo is great. It’ll be limited compared to a coil, but they are great if you know your not gonna be tracking that car or doing much tuning with suspension.

I have a Dampachi plushy that was signed by Nomuken and the main guy for Option Mag. From what I hear, what makes it cool is that they usually won’t associate themselves with non sponsor items. So to get them to sign something that isn’t their brand they usually wouldn’t have done it. This was way back when they came over from japan for an expo event at Irwindale. Nomuken even out his little character he draws on the top silver collar. Pretty neat. I still have it and it’s pretty much is in the same condition as the day it was signed. I got the plushy from a roommate that worked sales for Tein back when they were just starting here in the states. I think I had the second EDFC that was sold here.

Back then there wasn’t any trust built yet for Tein here but man they blew up after that. Back then it was either Skunk sleeves, then Ground Control if you had a little more money. Big money spenders went for 5Zigen/Buddy Club and if you really had cash you did the HKS hyper dampers... those were cool but were serious cash. Lol a lot of us back then ran Skunk Coilovers in cheap KYB shocks... it worked for price. I really enjoyed the Teins since they were only $750 for the base models and it was entry into actually feeling like you had a real set of adjustables. The EDFC was rather cool and switched pretty quick. I ran the controller under my VAFC... remember those? That was the shit back then ! I had a set of Work J-Wings... most wouldn’t remember or even know what those were. I loved them..... until I was able to get a real set of GABs... those got stolen in Vegas then I was able to get some Mugen RNR’s which were sexy. I always wanted a rim called the SW388 by Spoon. I’m way older now so most kids probably wouldn’t know what I’m rambling about since that stuff is probably way long gone and not available anymore... not to mention out of style with all these kids doing their “stance” thing. I’m just not into that when it gets all crazy. I actually liked the way a stretched tire looked when it was just a little bit but damn, some of these kids now days and how much they stretch and then kick the camber to where they’re riding on just an inch of inside tire. Not sure why they do this but hope it passes as another fad.

I mean, I think for those that just actually need something quick, then get the cheap ones especially if you're needing to replace them and don't want the same OEM ones and wants to upgrade.. But for those who can wait, should just buy quality over quantity since it's just generally more R&D to go into them so chances are you are getting a much better product than the cheap stuff which will only get you so far before you need to get something better that will handle more and probably also extend your tuning options for best handling! Idk, that's just my opinion but I personally don't mind dropping good money as long as I know it's been researched and developed to work as great as it should than going cheap on something I'll regret or won't be able to get the most out of.. I'm going to be upgrading the Handling on my VR4 too which I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy D2 Coils for it also because I'm trying to do Time Attack so I am trying to get that track focused adjustability in it..

Suspension is an important safety thing on a car. DO NOT cheap out on suspension parts. If you're going to run coilovers, get the best ones you can afford EXCEPT if the only ones you can afford are the really cheap ones. In that case, don't buy them at all until you can afford decent once. Cheap parts are expensive.

Yeah. Own an FRS. Rolling on the Tein Basis Z's. Live in Canada, coils have seen two full Canadian 3 feet of snow at once omfg winters. They're still alive and working A+. Adjusting them to clear snow for winter and to look swank in the summer isn't that hard. I don't even have them seize up. Personally I clean the threads before I adjust and it isn't that bad. Honestly, they've held up really well for being cheap. I tend to not slow down quite enough for some certain bumps and parking lot entrances and they've had no issues. I bought them to lower the car and give it a bit more snappier feel to the suspension, and I got that. Only thing I wish they had was adjustable camber, cause when I slam the rears all the way down it does go really /slanty boi\ and personally I like not replacing tires every two months. But you get what you pay for. If you have an FRS though do yourself a favor and replace the sway bar end links when you install your coils. Odds are your car will be like mine and your links will be rust welded onto your strut and you'll strip the stupid hex bolt/nut thing and curse them for not making it a damn regular bolt and nut to begin with too.

I'm using $630 godspeed mono ss on my 2002 outback h6 and I like the way they ride,nice ride and great adjustability for a cheapish coilover kit.my little brother has some $200 maxspeedingrods on his na miata and it actually rides decent for being so cheap but only the ride height is adjustable on his,my 89 Camaro (drift build) is on 1,400 bucks worth of qa1 coilovers and its great but expensive,I have adjustable caster,camber,ride height and damper adjustment.it really just comes down to what is right for you and your preference,so cheap expensive or in the middle dont matter if you get the results you want.

Same thing I'd say, if you don't have the cash for 600$ coils just get a set of new dampers and some HR Springs. Or even just sport suspension (non adjustable) by HR, Bilstein or KW

I’m a daily driver man, and I was gonna get airbags. But I don’t wanna spend that money and deal with the malfunctions when they happen, and I just wanna drop it a little bit, where it’s just enough, I really like Eibach I heard they’re good because I have a Volkswagen Passat. I’m looking at comments & you guys have a lot of experience so I need ideas, please.

I’m running KW V1s on my SQ5. Lowered it just enough and still be as comfortable as stock if not more so. Someday dealerships should catch on to allow customers to order their transportation the way they want it from the get go.

its just not cost effective to sell cars that way in bulk, save for a few minor exceptions... even for a $50k audi. When you start buying $150k cars, you can order your vehicle with a ton more customization from the factory

I have 15 - 17 years old tein suspension and the ride is good but it’s showing its age..so a good thing to do, just like the rest of the car is keep up with it. Don’t let something go bad all the way or break before you start doing some research, know your car/truck...because a broken down vehicle is something some people don’t recover from because it’s a downer.

It's all about the insert. Crack open 5 sub $500 coilovers and they will most likely have the same cheap black generic insert. Open up a bilstein, koni, KW and they will have their own inserts. Some actually use inserts made by koni. Dampening adjustment is a must anymore If you want a comfortable ride. The springs are next important. Correct spring rates are must. The coilover bodies are similar. The best ones have corrosion resistant finishes. I've done the $400 coilovers. Told everyone "yeah they ride great". Years later, I build my own setup. Koni adjustable inserts, KW corrosion resistant bodies, specific springs for spring rates and height. Will never cheap out on suspension again.

I went with the "feal 441" coilovers on my 2002 WRX Wagon(very nice coilover but ride was firmer then stock wrx shocks on full soft setting), they are nice but kinda expensive @$1450USD, that was the most I wanted to spend on my budget. If I had more money I might have went with "HKS Hipermax IV GT Coilovers", it's hard to justify paying over $1600usd for coilover that will only last 45k miles cause they have to be rebuilt ect.

Question: I have a stock 99 eclipse gs and I’m building my budget and estimates for upcoming mods. It’s a daily spirited driver(in nyc tho) and my suspension is one of the first performance mods I want to work on. I’m new to car mods, so could someone recommend a good place to start for coilovers? Trying to not be tooo expensive lol, but I plan to run 17’s with Michelin sport s4 tires. Thanks for any advice 😅

Ok so I am brand new to the Suspension game and will be purchasing a 2020 Veloster R-Spec with the MacPherson Strunt with Coil Springs I will be doing a bunch of work to this car as I tend to keep my cars for 8-12 years...And would like my suspension to hug the road and still be adjustable as I live near Chicago and Chicago Winters SUCK...that being said are there any suggestions on what I should look for? Or would you recommend staying with the suspension that comes with the car?
