I've made several feature documentary films on the gh5 and I have two I'm preparing to shoot right now. I've looked at everything from high-end Red's, the lower end Komodo, Canon C70, all the Sony's, the S1H, etc. I haven't decided yet, but the gh5 HLG internal 400mbps in 10-bit with its spectacular IBIS options is so hard to leave. Yes, you must manually focus, use exterior audio, etc., but for a higher-end documentary, (with all the budget needed to choose any camera), I'm still considering shooting on the gh5 today in February 2021. I was one of the first to get my hands on the gh5 and I used v-log for everything. The truth is most of us never see good shots online with these cameras. For example, many bloggers on KZfaq are not exporting HDR correctly and their output is in Rec-709??? even when viewing with an HDR device. A full-frame camera is spectacular and the low light with the S1H is better...same with so many others, but I really haven't run into that problem with most planned shots. Finally, I've looked at comparison shots between gh5 and Red. The crazy thing is I'm 50/50 choosing which clips were shot on what camera when shot by someone who knew what they were doing. I think we are to the point that these cameras have become quite good. For me, it comes to the environment that I'm filming in...if on the street I need something that won't draw attention; if the dynamic range is critical, the gh5 gets a complete fail (except when shooting in HLG and sometimes with V-Log), but a Red works better here...but you can't really use any Red hand-held in a car or on a subway for a documentary and use the footage...and don't turn that Red off because it's at least 30 seconds to turn on again;; if I must have awesome slow-mo and want to color it than the 8-bit on the gh5 vlog won't work that great (but I've got by). I just want to second what you have said here: the gh5 is absolutely a relevant camera and I'm having a very tough time choosing whether to lead out with it on my next two films. BTW, something you didn't talk much about was the MFT lenses. The MFT lenses rock. They are absolutely spectacular. This MFT lens mount will allow me to put anything on it and it has allowed me to have amazingly creative experiences. I honestly hate the huge full-frame lenses. I love how I can literally place the Gh5 in my coat pocket, walk onto a subway, get a quick shot, and put it back in my pocket. Finally, the gh5 is easy to blend shots with other cameras...especially the Red...and if you are filming in HLG with a true HDR output, I don't see the difference between it and most other cameras. BTW, no one ever said my shots didn't look professional when shooting on the Gh5. I stopped using a tripod when I got the Gh5 and I still think it has the best IBIS around. Finally, in a COVID-19 word, that 2x's crop factor for interviews actually is a plus. I shoot with a 42.5 or 75mm lens for interviews (hand-held). The interview subjects don't want me super close to them right now so It's absolutely a relevant camera today like you said. Great topic.

Some fantastic comments there, Doug! Thanks very much! You're absolutely right too, especially regarding stopping using a tripod! As soon as I bought it and tried out the IBIS, I straight away thought that I can now adopt handheld-style filmmaking that isn't going to look crappy in post and have to rely on some warp stabilisation. For the reasons you've said, I think it's safe to say that there still is, and will be, the need for MFT to continue for longer!

Just bought a new GH5 and I dont expect that video or photo requirements at the amateur level will outdate this camera for as long as it puts out quality media. I made some camera setting adjustments based on professional advice and taking test stills at midnight in a -very- low light room and the pictures are coming out focused and quite bright, as if the room was fully lit. I don't imagine video will be as bright though. Glad I was directed to this camera, thanks for the video.

I'm primarily a DSLR stills guy, I'm one of those types that doesn't really like EVFs so when I was looking for something to take care of the video side (my DSLR sucks for video) I went down the panasonic m4/3 route for the video side starting with a G7 (so so cheap) and then upgrading to a GH5 and it's a wonderful balance of image quality, features, nothing really comes close at a similar price point. It's only Achilles heel is you can't trust the AF and have to work around it.

@@JordanLeeVideo It'll be a tough one, when the GH5 came out nothing came close to it's feature set at a similar price point. With the Sony A7Siii in the market the GH6 is going to have a hard enough time matching that feature set in m4/3 format at a price that's more competitive.

Hey Chris! My most used lenses are either the Olympus 12-40 2.8 if I want to stay native and need to occasionally use AF it's clutch focus ring is also a really nice feature to have. However, the quality of the Sigma 18-35 is unbeatable for the price, plus it could also be used on your bmpcc with it being EF mount. I'm personally not a fan of the Panasonic 12-60 2.8-4.0 for video, but works perfectly fine for photography.

@@JordanLeeVideo Hi Jordan - thank you for coming back to me so quickly, really appreciated! Ironically I bought the 12-60mm thinking it would give me plenty of scope for videos haha. The one thing I have found is, certainly with the 12-60mm and 45-175mm lenses I bought with my GH5, I can't seem to get a really shallow depth of field unlike my previous Canon 7D or indeed the BMPCC. Is this just a result of the 4/3 sensor size? I now understand that effectively the F stop of a lens is x2 in terms of DoF; that is to say a 2.8f is the equivalent of a 5.6f in terms of DoF. As such, I was looking at the Panasonic 42.5mm f1.7, the 20mm f1.7 and the 25mm f1.7 to try and give me the ability for softer focus; is this a good idea? Dully noted with regards to the Sigma lens! I'm just a little dubious about using an adapter ring on the GH5 - truth be told, I've never used one before; is there anything to know before I look at this route? Many thanks again! Chris

You're welcome Tess! MPB is a great place for second hand cameras, and as it's a popular camera there should be a few available at different conditions so you can choose one at the right price point. Alternatively, the GH6 is almost certain to be announced this year, so it could be worth holding out for that, so a 'new' GH5 is likely to then be cheaper than its current retail price 🙂

@JordanLeeVideo
@JordanLeeVideo 3 жыл бұрын
@@tessryanfilm3800 Hey Tess! Absolutely no problem, you're not bothering me at all :) So the EF-S will be absolutely fine for you. Essentially, this lens is made for an APS-C sized sensors or smaller, which EF-S covers. When you see 'EF' only on a lens, this means that the lens will cover a Full Frame sensor (larger than APS-C). It's the same mounting system, but just intended for different sensor sizes. Fortunately, as the GH5 is a small sensor, an EF-S lens will work absolutely fine. But in this instance, this lens wouldn't work if you adapted onto a Full Frame camera (like the Lumix S1) without cropping. It's why the SIGMA 18-35 is such a popular lens for GH5 users, whereas if this lens was designed for full frame sensors, it would be at LEAST double the price :)

Another GH4 user here, and still pretty happy with it... especially with the Ninja V for 10 bit external recording on V-Log L. I would like the internal 10 bit of the GH5S though... but I'm also holding out for the GH6. Like many GH users, I got into Sigma's glass with the 18-35 f1.8 and 50-100 f1.8 which are both APS-C lenses. So going for the S cameras would mean new glass... my real dilemma will likely be whether to go for a camera with APS-C sensor and electronic NDs, like a Z-cam E2 S6 or the new BlackMagic Pocket 6k Pro (although it's HUGE which puts me off). The GH cameras are the perfect size for travel. Given the quality of the S series Panasonics, and their V-Log colour science, the GH6 looks like it's going to be stellar... we're spoilt for choice right now!

The lens is amazing. The f1.7 I am in love. but....I notice a flaw but it may not be that big of a deal if you wouldn't use this to film. I bought 2 follow focus units and I put one on the focus ring, and one on the zoom and what I find is that you can't change focal points and zoom at the same time. For example, if you are zooming in and turning the focus ring to a closer focal point, it sticks at whatever focus point you start at and then snaps to the closer focal point once you stop zooming in. If that makes sense. I don't know if anyone has pointed this out but changing focus while either zooming in or out should be something that I would think the lens should be able to do especially for the price. Has anyone experienced this or know why this is? Hello.....? Panasonic?

Hi Jordan, just purchased a LUMIX GH5, but I cannot get anything definitive about the SD cards that people are using. I was talking to Kingston, the memory and SD manufacturers. The advice was that high-end Cameras have outstripped the ability of manufacturers to make inexpensive SD’s simply because the market for top end cards is not big enough for SD manufacturers to take notice. I am not keen to spend on an external Viewer and memory set up yet, but can see that It would certainly make good sense in the short to mid-term. So have you any advice on what SD memory cards you use please?

Hi Kevin! Welcome aboard the GH5 club! That's really interesting to hear! I've always used SanDisk SDs - the 170mbps cards. But that's because I've never had to shoot with the GH5s all-intra codec. If that's something you'd also need, I've heard good things about the Sony Tough SDs. Avoid Angelbird though as I've encountered card corruption with some of those. If you only plan on shooting with the GH5s LongGop codecs, the sandisks will see you through, and they're incredibly cheap! 🙂

You can pick up the Lumix S5 for the same price as new at time of release, which has a few extra benefits (low light and dynamic range, and pro res raw). But cameras like the Fuji Xt-4 would be a great shout for your webcam-esque videos with its better AF, but also has fantastic features as well as a slightly larger sensor 👍

@JordanLeeVideo
@JordanLeeVideo 3 жыл бұрын
Tough decision isn't it. Depending on how much you really need that autofocus, I'd probably suggest the newly announced GH5 II my friend! 4k 60p 10 bit (420 though but still usable) with other features including vlog pre-installed and pro res raw (output). In my opinion, the GH6 will be at least 2.5k, simply due to its development claiming the features like what's in the a7siii and the r5 including 4k 120p in 10 bit, so if that stretches your budget, the gh5iii or even the S1/5 would be a good option as it has better AF, in video, over the GH5, and is full frame 🙂

I'm considering both the GH5 and the S1. What do you see as the reasons to choose one over the other? What use cases would one perform better than the other?
@JordanLeeVideo
@JordanLeeVideo 3 жыл бұрын
Hmmm. If you're shooting more run and gun stuff, I'd say the S1 as you know you'll be covered with low light and better AF (in comparison to the gh5) for if you ever need it. For general corporate/commercial work in a business with smaller budgets or just wants to save a bit of money, I'd say the GH5 as it works incredibly well in controlled (lit) environments, and SDs are much cheaper to invest in, than XQDs in the S1. For any shorts/features, that's where it gets tougher, but depends on what people prefer, as currently, the S1 gives you greater dynamic range, but ght GH5 offers all intra recording. That said, the 5.9k raw output next year will then make the S1 the default choice.
@alantuttphotography
@alantuttphotography 3 жыл бұрын
@@JordanLeeVideo Thanks for the detailed reply! My work is probably more controlled-lighting situations with a little run-and-gun (travel) mixed in. I've been leaning toward the GH5 mostly, although the extra dynamic range of the S1 is tempting.

Hey there! I've always used the SanDisk Extreme Pro 170mbps and have never had any issues, both in 4k and 1080 at 10 bit 👍 They're incredibly cheap. However if you wanted to shoot in its All-Intra codec, you would need V90s which I don't have any, so I couldn't recommend any of those I'm afraid!

At the time of buying this, the S5 hadn't been announced yet. Breaking news: GH5 Mk2 has some 40 improvements, and we think it is now in the same league as cinema cameras specially with 4 Olympus lenses (7-14 f1.2) + 25mm f1.2 + 42.5 and that 75mm f1.7. With the exception of Dynamic Range: but that can be overcome if you keep the lighting within tighter limits. and Auto focus isn't used in Holywood anyway. so Price to quality the Gh5 V2, or even Gh5s is a very serious camera in the hands of an experienced operator.

It's definitely helped me get into the product video sector, being able to shoot slow motion (increased shutter) at 4000 ISO and have squeaky clean footage, whereas I personally wouldn't want to do that on the GH5. Dynamic range on this camera is also incredible in Log, up to 2 Stops greater, which is a great bonus to have, and to me, it produces better quality footage SOOC than the FS7 (S1s natural profile vs FS7s standard)

Question from a newbie: I want to create close up videos of birds eating seed off the deck in my backyard very similar to this example ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jqqidZiUmZPHaY0.html ). I want to run the video camera for very long periods of time so it must resist overheating so that is why I am considering a Panasonic GH5ii but I am concerned about Panasonic's autofocus. Do you think this type of video could be created with manual focus ? Do you think the autofocus of the Panasonic GH5ii is good enough for this type of video ? ( If you think there is a better camera or camcorder option than the Panasonic GH5ii I would be grateful for any advice. I know the Sony A7Siii is also a good option but it is pretty expensive. ) Thank you for your help. PS - I would really be grateful for any advice you can give on this topic.
@JordanLeeVideo
@JordanLeeVideo 2 жыл бұрын
Personally I think that manual focus would be much better for scenarios like this. A big advantage of the GH5s small sensor size means it's depth of field is greater, meaning more will be in focus as opposed to the same settings on a full frame sensor like the a7siii. So you could potentially have about 12-18 inches of the decking in focus at all times. I don't trust the AF, even when it catches onto a subject. 🙂 It could be worth linking up the Image App and seeing if you can use the tap to focus AF feature to lock-onto the subject once a bird lands on the decking?

You reckon? I understand it hasn't dropped loads in price over the years, but for a 4K 10 bit mirrorless camera with unlimited recording, log recording, full size HDMI and other video-orientated features, there isn't many to compare at the price though even now. The G9 has limited recording, the Xt-3 doesnt have IBIS, a7iii is 8-bit only, and the EOS R is only single card slot. I think Panasonic bare this in mind and won't reduce it any more to keep profits as high as possible 🙂
