The resulting pattern was awesome before you even painted it. The painting after was just a nice touch. I approve, and I'm certain that my 6 year old would also approve.

I thought this was great. Awesome learning experience. Over here thinking what deck i want to try this with. I have some old street setups that it may be interesting to see if i can bring ine back to life with thia process.

Great video, and the snafu art came out great. DIY isn't easy when you to purchase everything. Owning or having access to tools is key.

Hey man, i can't say much because I've never done this but one thing i do know about epoxy is it tends to heat up during the curing process. I think maybe what happened is the clear plastic sheet you put on first heated up and shrunk/wrinkled taking in epoxy with it and also causing those voids elsewhere. With the amount of resin you used i dont see it being a structural issue. But it looks really cool! Cheers man

Those wrinkles may have been caused by the rags you used to separate de carbon fiber from the plastic bag, as they were not perfectly flat it made the fiber copy those bumpy shapes. Also you have to spread each layer of epoxy with that credit card so you don't get air pockets

Yup, I should have bought a layer or two of fleece or some other fabric I could have laid flat

There are a couple things someone can do to avoid wrinkles. First of all use the exact ammount of epoxy. The data sheet of any fiber material gives you information on either weight or volume percentage of resin/fiber. Too much resin and the matrix could develop cracks, too little and the matrix will not achieve peak strength and may delaminate. During the vacuum process use special perforated foil and fleece on top. This way the excess epoxy can escape through the holes and gets soaked by the fleece.

Cool video! I like tinkering with projects like this, but I think you convinced me to not give this a go given how things can go wrong without more specialized equipment. Great video though, I enjoyed watching the process!

Formica is durable withstanding heavy impacts and unlike fiber glass and even carbon fiber isn't an irritant to the sensitive or for that matter anyone once it gets beat up and scratched. Heat resistant, moisture resistant, easy to maintain, hygienic, multiple texture and extensive aesthetic choices.

I would say carbon probably wasn't the best material for this job anyways. You can get heavy, Triax, fiberglass for about $3 a foot and it's gonna be much stiffer than carbon like that. Also to maximize torsional stiffness, you'll want a triax composite on the top and bottom of the deck; I would say having one layer on top and one on the bottom is much better than 2 on the bottom.

If it's still got too much torsional flex, you could also do the top too (diagonally this time)!
@owencampbell777
@owencampbell777 Жыл бұрын
That’s a good idea, but I don’t want to put any more money into this board. The flex has been locked down enough
@theHU02GO
@theHU02GO Жыл бұрын
Tri-axial fibers on the bottom (unidirectional fibers parallel to the long side of the board) and bi-axial fibers on top gives you the best sandwich to stiffen up the board. The unidirectional fibers on bottom reduce flex, and the biax fibers reduce torsion.

@@theHU02GO What if we only want to reduce torsional flex and not flex in any other direction?
@theHU02GO
@theHU02GO Жыл бұрын
@@nickamarit in this case just use biaxial fibers top and bottom. I forgot to mention that the fibers must lay in a +45° and -45° orientation to the length achsis of the board. However, no matter what kind of laminate you put on your board it will affect stiffness in all modes... but like this it will mostly affect torsional stiffness.
@nickamarit
@nickamarit Жыл бұрын
@@theHU02GO So for bottom = 2 sheets: +45 & -45, and for top is same = 2 sheets: +45 & -45... so a total of 4 sheets, correct?

You could also just hand laminate it. Safes heaps of trouble with vacuum bags. Also definitely good gloves mate.

I fiberglassed both sides of my board with strands in offset directions either side. Big improvement. And I enjoyed the job, even though it was a hell of a lot of work 😂 Board is a bit warped unfortunately, which I probably should have tried to fix before. But it works fine anyhow 👌

@@owencampbell777 yeah, that was one thing they were very cautious about at the shop where I bought it. Apparently, the Epoxy doesn't have an immediate toxic effect on the skin, but repeated skin contact can lead to over-sensitization and development of very strong allergy to the compounds in it
