This is a topic that I’ve been wondering about a lot this year. I’m in Illinois, and with the accumulation of snow and ice this winter, I was more than a little concerned about the welfare of the deer and other wildlife in our area. I understand that they have an incredible ability to survive harsh conditions, but this year really put them to the test. I’ve been hearing that by supplementally feeding deer corn it can change the gut enzymes(flora) and actually cause issues when the supplemental feeding is removed. I heard that the problem arises when they return to the browse when the corn runs out or is removed, because their gut can no longer digest the browse. Just wondering if there’s any truth to that, in your opinion. Thanks for the knowledge and insight!

From Michigan. In our northern lower and upper peninsula deer survive fine. Try logging, or chop and drop trees like: elm, maple, ash, popular. Plant lots of cereal rye in fall with red clover. They'll pound those plots every snow melt.

This was so educational and was great to watch. My family has a great timber that buts up along the crop fields that we own in place of dumping corn or supplemental feed we go out and push the snow off an area to allow them to get to the bare ground so they have access to all parts of the plant that was in the field. I love the content and watching the show. As only going into my 4th year of hunting I have learned so much from your videos and how to better hunt the areas that I have access to.

Continuing the legacy of Midwest Whitetail is our mission and we intend to bring these stories to life each season for many years to come. With your support that will be possible! Jared's pedestal turned out incredible didn't it? What a good representation of bringing a story back to life forever. In Texas, our food plots come in plastic bags & we dump it in feeders unless you're in East Texas where it actually rains. The great Texas 100 year freeze that you guys in Iowa deal with every year came and went and a friend of mine who has 10,000 acres and runs sheep said he lost 1/2 of his baby lambs. He estimates about 25% of the axis deer (they're from India and can't take the real cold). WT seemed to have faired well. But on my 100 acres, I didn't see any dead deer, exotic or WT, as I still have some cedar where deer could get out of the 4 degree with 15 mph wind. A few things I do to manage my land to keep the deer healthy is thinning cedar from oak motts to create not only more browse but better acorn production. I also buy the cattle pellets 50# for 10$ a bag at Tractor Supply. That's 20% protein and of course we have our corn food plot in a 50 gallon drum for selective harvesting :). I know you purists don't like it but is not a food plot baiting deer too? LOL. If I could grow a food plot I would. Thanks for sharing the info here. Good stuff.

Bowhunting RadNek, first off as I mentioned in an earlier comment, thank you for taking the time to watch the show this week! We really do appreciate the support. Everyone has an opinion on what's right and what is wrong but all I'll say is as long as the law is being followed, by all means do what you want to do! Texas and Iowa is like comparing apples to oranges but at the end of the day, the tradition of hunting and the importance of passing that on to the next generation is what it's all about. Hunters should support hunters and I hope 2021 is you best season ever my friend! Have a great rest of your week.

When supplemental feeding deer, corn mixed with a co-op mix is vital, something that has to be mixed in gradually so they can get used to it. If you add in a alfalfa pellet or whole oats, that’s great as well but the corn has to be more. Saying that you have a 30 gallon can, 75 lb corn, 25 Lbs of a mix of oats, alfalfa and a cattle feed will total 150lbs, mix that and you’ll have a great combination of quality food.
@whitehondarider22

I try to use cracked corn in my mixes as its easier for their stomachs to break down, and i feel they get more nutrition from it, but i have no scientific facts to back that up

With adult does being the best breeders,best mothers,best chance of surviving winter; why does everyone insist on targeting the biggest mature does after they are bred? Private land hunters go to great lengths to grow more bucks then harvest the unborn fawns. Always an issue to be dealt with. Nice episode, many issues to discuss.

Here in Ontario it can be -30 for 3 months straight and we get an average of 140 inches of snow a year and are deer seem to survive just fine yes we probably have a higher winter kill then most places but they make it threw the winter with no food plots or feeding they live off of the trees wish I could send pics of the cedars and willow trees they eat right to the ground and as high as they can reach. And they always have winder yards deer travel as far as 30 plus miles to be in the winter yards

Patrick Gibson, first off thank you for taking the time to leave a comment and for watching the show, we really appreciate that! Those conditions sounds pretty intense relative to Iowa but like you said, they're probably more acclimated for that than herds that live further South. Much like you said about the cedars, we noticed that more this past month than I can remember in recent memory. As high as they could reach, they were browsing them to the branch. Have a great week!

@@MidwestWhitetailVideos you are probably correct in are deer are probably more acclimated to are conditions they yard up and keep the trails open you hardly see and tracks off of the main trails systems also make easy pickings for the wolves and yotes as well 2 years ago they estimate that are herds took as high as 60 % winter kill not cause of the heavy snow cause of a huge ice storm on top of 4 feet of snow. Big tag cut backs and are deer recover fast it is truly amazing what they can go through

How did deer survive all these years without human intervention? I understand what you’re saying but if we supplement their feed won’t they’ve become reliant as a species long term? Idk I’m on the fence with that, seems like they would be stronger without. Don’t get me wrong I love deer and want to protect the resource but they can survive on their own. Mother nature has a way of taking care of things.
