Help defense -- which was once constrained in the NBA by the illegal defense rules -- has continued to evolve at the highest levels of basketball. This video starts with the 1998 NBA Finals and then looks at some of the more prominent defensive schemes since then: No-Middle defenses, Pack Line defenses, and Help-Only-When-Necessary defenses. Coaches include: Tom Thibodeau, Chris Beard, Dick Bennett, and more.

Love the video, shared with team, so comment is for detailed discussion. At 4:00 mark, the pick and roll was defended with drop coverage, and no help was needed by the corner 3 defender. One of the best help principles to use is to only commit to the help if it is actually needed. Secondly, when the ball handler got a pick on one side and ended up clearly on the right side, the same corner 3 defender was no longer the help (weak side help). You can see that the weak side help actual came over. So double whammy on the strong side corner 3 defender. I use the pack line because we don’t have a big so best to prevent any inside. And with the pack line, our principle is to just never leave the strong side corner 3 (only stunt).

This is the way I have always viewed it (and I'm surprised I haven't heard many others voice this opinion) . You have formation strength and sideline; like football. If you have more players on one side, then you inherently have more of an opportunity to help since they are technically closer together. You also have the sideline which counts as a defense. What a true defense(of the future) should do, is for to the side with the most help defenders. This also includes the sideline when deciding. So to take a trivial example... 3v3 (in 2k) you should force to the help if both are on the same side. If not you force to sideline. Does anyone agree?

Florida st would deny one pass away while being in and extreme on the line up the line stance. Then they would guard the ball like a pack line would. U should break this down because u didn’t mention this type in ur video

The UVA/Texas Tech national title game was the highest-profile contrast of top level no-middle vs. top level Packline, and really both teams were effective at adjusting to the other side and scoring well. Elite well-run offenses beat the best defenses in general, and the best defenses are the ones that can adjust to take away what the other team does best to limit the damage. It is worth noting this year that Tony Bennett has softened the extent to which he plays packline and is more willing to give up the baseline.
