I prefer loose collecting, I can pose the figures however I want them to be and have them displayed in a wide variety of different ways, but also because I but these figures because I WANT THEM. I wouldn't spend the money on something that I DON'T want and just leave it in the box to take up space, I buy something that I truly want and I want to show it off in the best way I can think of

I used to keep all empty packaging and flattened it. Until moving, those dense empty packaging boxes became a huge burden not to mention the dense weight and pain/injuries to move them. They started to take up too much space. I ended up going digital - taking pictures of all packaging and only saving cool backdrops and the vintage packaging of 70s, 80s through mid 90s

I buy what I like, so I don't see them as an investment. I have found that prices do go up, sometimes in an insane way. For instance: The CORPSE BRIDE figure herself, which retailed for $14.99, has recently been on ebay for over $700 dollars. That's crazy money. By the way, unless it's a statue from Sideshow or a figure from HOT TOYS, I keep them in the box or on the card. Statues are meant to be on display, but I have them under plexiglass.

Don’t judge me, but if I can afford it I buy two of everything I like. One to open, one to keep mint in package. In the event I only have one of something I tend to keep that boxed or packaged. And to be honest, in many cases I love the boxed/carded look way better, especially classic styled carded figures. When I’m dead and whoever inherits will appreciate the in-box stuff the most too as it’ll be easier to sell. Hardly no one buys loose figures.

I've been collecting since 1991..and I usually keep everything sealed and boxed, but over the years to present day, I do open many of my figures and ships. I mostly collect Star Wars, since I've been a fan since 1977, and still have the original toys and figures, but I also collect Star Trek, and Jurassic Park/World. I have so much stuff, everything is in plastic tubs and footlockers, however the two rooms that holds about 45% of my collection is both loose and boxed..the rest of my collection is elsewhere in the house. Thanks for the informative insight on what us collectors do, open for display or boxed and locked away. I have stuff in my collection, I haven't seen in decades, and I don't even know the condition of them.

Great video once again!! U hit home on this one. I feel like my entirely too big marvel legends collection is out of control and every single one is mib. Now i just wanna sell most of them and only keep ones that i have a connection too and open and display them. Legends look way better displayed and Ive only grown to accept this in past year or so. This video def helped to solidify that. An example though of figures I would not open are the star wars credit collection i collect. Looks way better displayed in box plus there is no need to open them because I have the black series versions of all these characters anyway so if I want I can open those but keep the boxes. Plus alot of the star wars black series if I can afford to I will buy two of them so I can display one.

Historically I've always let my figures breathe, but recently I have been just keeping them in their boxes due to not having a readily available display space for them and have not really looked back since. I do love how figures look in their boxes as well, and of course they will hold their value that way. Once I get a display space for them, I might start cracking them open once again but I'm still uncertain since I do think I might have to start parting ways with some of my collectibles for space and economic reasons. But for bulk collecting you pretty much have to open them out of their box unless you have a ton of real estate available to store them and display them.

Respect to all those who love keeping their figures in the box :) I personally love to play with them and pose them and do creative stuff with them. In the early 2000s I opened so much and it was a fun time out of college with my pal but now I keep nearly everything in box and enjoy that small toy store feel, being surrounded by that goodness and it's so much easier and I can display 5x as much on card/box. The bigger the toy however the more likely I take it out and display it, like Unicron, or a prop like a lightsaber or helmet or something big like a statue. Something larger than say 12 inches because those things are meant to be seen, touched, and centerpieces you can engage with. Even large lego builds like masterpiece star fighters. The larger an item the more I want it seen, like my kenner death star, I have it complete mint in box, straight turbolaser tip with swing and trash monster and I love how that thing looks because it is a dream playset with so much going on. It has to be a real grail for me to buy of course if its a big item, but I'll put them away and put something new out to keep things fresh.

I mainly collect for loose figure display but I like to mix in carded figures for color and art variety to the display. If I do open up a figure that is carded with a blister bubble, I like to keep the card back. For instance, I kept all of my Super 7 MOTU card backs and my Masters Of The WWE card backs. If you haven't done a video yet on collecting vintage vs modern toys I think that would be a great topic to cover.

I like opening the Black Series figures on cards, but I also like saving the cards. I started using an xacto knife to slice the plastic just enough to get the figure out. It still looks nice, just doesn't have a figure in it anymore. The only stuff I've left in box are some blue and orange line Black Series that I got in a bundle deal from a guy that I didn't really want, but they were part of the deal. Everything else gets opened and used in photography!

First off I love your videos. I too am a kid at heart. I have a situation and need help. In the late 90s I started to collect the Todd McFarlane Spawn figures. They are all boxed. I now am in a new home and now have space to display in man cave. Not sure of head count, but have so far all the series from 1 to 14 (I stopped for a bit) I even have some special edition ones. I'm not sure how to go about displaying. Floating shelves are nice, but I have over 50 so I'll need many shelves, I don't know if I should get peg boards and hang them or even use the push pin hooks on the wall. After this video I wanted to unbox all as I could set them up in poses, but I like the box and nostalgia is great. I'm not planning to sell these, but need advice without spending an arm and a leg. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

My main hindrance about all this right now is I don’t have a man cave currently… So I’m super limited about what I can display, which sucks!. MOC same MIP is useful when the art of background or box art becomes important. I remember people also like the way the internal plastic holds action figures and its accessories. Maybe design a cut into the plastic and some better way to be able to play with the toy then return it back into packaging may be the better alternative! Important reasoning would be no lost accessories or less weather degradation (or dirtier dustier) looks of the toy. I buy some to open and keep others to keep MIP (doubles of my favorites or I found more on clearance).

Loose collecting for the most part! Space is a huge issue when leaving them sealed. Displaying, Posing, Dioramas, loose is so much more fun imho. When moving, you can fill up a box with a dozen sealed vs approximately 50 loose 6". I only leave a few sealed for display: vintage figures; which I'm nostalgic about and of the new figures; most favorite character with great artwork on the packaging. Also placeholders stay sealed (the bought but unsure if to keep or not to keep) like the modern takes of Marvel Legends figures which I prefer the Classic look of but Classic hasn't been made yet and might not be made. (Example: Electro, Moon Knight which now have classic figures as well, Shocker (still waiting on classic)

I went ahead and unboxed all of my WWE Jakks Pacific/Mattel action figures during the "Covid-Era" that I've been collecting since I was a pre-teen. If I could go back in time and slap myself for doing so then I would have done it but you know.... Obvious lack of space issues..... Especially when you don't live alone and can only store your stuff in one bedroom. I had to have owned close to over hundreds of these things but ultimately ended up pinning band/movie posters in place of where my action figures once were. I guess it was kind of one of those "You grew out of that phase" scenarios and have no need to have them lying around anymore if you stopped collecting them anyways.

I made a rule of thumb... if I can afford it, I get 2 of something, one to keep in the box and one to open. and if they ever double in value then I make a decision if i want to sell to further my toy collecting. But as for opening and not... if its in the past 15 years, I open except if its a retro /reissue of 80's and 90's toys then i leave on the card because like with MOTU origins or G1 reissues of transformers etc... I make a section of the collection room look like a toy store from the 80's... My fondest happiest memories of toys was walking into KB toys in the mall .. the wonder and excitement abound and now i can get that every time i roll my wheelchair into the collection / computer room.

I was diagnosed with really bad OCD and my whole life I was always so protective of the boxes and always would panic if they had any damage on them. Over the years dealing with moving, aging, animals, etc. You kinda get over it and just take them out of box. It's much easier to travel.

Question: I purchased 3 first edition league of legends collectible figures. They are sold at target for relatively cheap (about $20 each). Last time riot sanctioned a toy release of league figures (Funko) they stopped producing them months after release and are now no where to be found. I'm scared to open these because some of the funkos found themselves double, triple, or even 7x their retail value. If they stop producing these, i don't want to be that guy that opened his first editions (they are marked first editions). So the way I see it is this: 1. I can open them, because no matter how much they go up in price, i never see myself actually selling them (I'm a video game collector, and have an original Zelda 2 factory sealed on nes that I bought for $70 and its now priced at $500). So there's no way I'd sell these. 2. I keep them packaged and see if they are still being produced in 6 months to a year. And decide if they are worth opening then. Or 3. I open these and shell out and extra $100 to repurchase the set of 1st editions and put them up in storage for good measure. What do you think I should do?

With vintage 1960's or 70's GI Joe or Action man figures often times they come with with no clothing or ripped or stained clothing. The uniforms and accessories desired are likely to be easier to find in a 40th anniversary boxed set which would need to be opened otherwise it's just a bare GI Joe or one with a messed up and torn uniform with missing items.

Don't forget another reason to open figures, customizing! I open all of my figures and (at least for now) I keep the boxes. I figure if I want to display them in their packages then I can just put the figures back in. Also dioramas are really great to make impressive displays with low amounts of figures.

I open virtually all of mine, unless it’s one that I like enough to buy two of. I also feel as though loose figures don’t nearly depreciate in value compared to their boxed or carded counterparts. Not worth as much to be sure, but there have been plenty of figures I’ve sold without the box for close to what they’ve been going for sealed.

there's no right or wrong way. it's your money, you do with it what you see fit. it gets old defending myself to people who wind up getting mud and peanut butter on their figures, yet i don't tell anyone else what they should do with their own shit. the only thing i don't get is why someone would buy a boxed figure just to take out when picking them up loose is so much cheaper. that's not me telling anyone how to collect, it's just basic economic common sense, lol.

If they're in a box where they can be re-inserted I genereally let them loose for a while, later to go in the box again. If they're on a card with bubble they have to stay that way. As you say, the box is a major part of the experience with all the artwork and so on.

But the most important thing keep in mind is that if you bought it and you like it because of who it is then you should open them up because you have no intent of reselling but if you prefer it in the box because you don’t play with toys like that then let it stay in the box, as long as you can afford the figure it’s your choice to play with it and nobody else’s.

I guess I am a real nerd, collecting boxed figures but on the other hand knowing that I should unbox them, mainly because of the playability of the toys. Toys are not made to be boxed forever, It's like a parent never creating an emotional bond with his or her kid. Fortunately I collect vintage Star Wars. I have some boxed playsets which were used by former owners, so it's boxed but not sealed/new (although they still look great to me) and I have a lot of loose complete vintage figures. Sometimes I build dioramas with them, that's really cool using photoshopping so I don't have to create a lot of environment. And last, but not least, yes I do own several vintage carded figures, but they have another purpose: they give me the feeling walking through a toy shop lightyears ago. So, in the end it is all sentimental, but it gives me a real good feeling.

Original suit Daredevil & Wolverine, Build a figure Thanos Iron Man with no Thanos part and a 12" Wolverine with Yellow and Blue suit all In there boxes. I also have a Luke Harper loose white tank top and jeans with that short sleeve jacket that the guy who sold me a WWE White belt IC Title threw in as a gift in 2020. I do have some X-Men Toy Biz figs loose and a couple Street Fighter figs from the MvC line. The other 2 loose wrestler's are an nWo Hogan and Scott Hall from the Hall and Nash 2 pack.
