Bit random but if I cut out the cat of my stock downpipe, and replaced it with just a bit of pipe, and kept the stock end can on, would that change the sound at all? And would it harm the engine?
@FaerodynMoto
@FaerodynMoto Жыл бұрын
Great questions! So what you talked about doing will most likely increase the volume of the exhaust. I'm not sure if it will sound better, but in theory it should sound just a bit louder. As far as harming the engine: with the rest of the stock exhaust still installed, I doubt there would be any problems with your engine. If in the future you swap out the other exhaust components for aftermarket ones, be sure to get the bike tuned or install a piggyback ECU like a Power Commander or Powertronics or something along those lines to give you the ability to purchase a tune online and upload it onto the bike.

@FaerodynMoto

Oh sorry for not responding sooner! Yes, adaptive ECU's have been around for decades in cars/trucks/vans/SUV's... I don't know enough about the motorcycle industry as a whole to know if they have plans to implement that technology into motorcycles or if they already have in certain models. I would imagine that in theory they would eliminate the need for piggyback ECU modules and tuning, however we've also been seeing companies like GM locking down the computers of certain models (like the new C8 Corvettes) to keep the performance levels within their predefined parameters. So I don't know if it would allow for such modifications or throw a code and prevent the motorcycle from working with anything other than stock running gear. I think I'll look into it! :-)

Typically manufacturers will void your vehicle's warranties when you make modifications such as removing the catalytic converter. You would need to read through the warranty stipulations to understand what you can and can't do with your bike. As far as how it affects the engine: without dyno tuning your motorcycle or without a piggyback ECU (like the Power Commander V) your bike could lose torque and run hotter as a result.

Is it bad for bike to remove catalytic converter and instal regular mid pipe and add slip on? Thanks
@FaerodynMoto
@FaerodynMoto Жыл бұрын
Replacing the whole exhaust usually leads to your bike running too lean (too much air/not enough fuel). It also leads to a loss of power because without back-pressure the exhaust valves don't stay open as long as they should. That issue can be fixed by getting the bike tuned professionally, or you could install a piggy-back ECU (like a Power Commander or Powertronics) and purchasing a tune online that you can install yourself. An extensive aftermarket exhaust without a proper tune for it can lead to your bike running too lean, which generates too much heat and can lead to excessive wear on the drive train. Not recommended long term...

Do high air flow catalytic converters increase fuel consumption?
@FaerodynMoto
@FaerodynMoto Жыл бұрын
Yes, but only a little. Typically any time you increase the airflow through the engine, the bike will start running lean. To prevent this, you can get the bike tuned or tune it yourself. Some bikes come with adaptive ECU's that automatically compensate for changes made, but the end result it the same: more fuel added to offset the increase of air. The increase of fuel used shouldn't be too noticeable from just one modification though. It's not until you fully open up your intake and exhaust that you will really start noticing a big change.

@FaerodynMoto 2 жыл бұрын
1.) Ok, so in short: a full exhaust modification like that can *potentially* lead to your bike running too lean (not enough fuel for the amount of air going through the engine). If your bike runs too lean, you might notice your engine temperatures go up high, which can lead to excessive wear and tear on the engine. It can also cause premature detonation of fuel in the cylinder, commonly referred to as engine "knock".
@FaerodynMoto
@FaerodynMoto 2 жыл бұрын
2.) There are a couple of solutions to fix this issue: A.) You can take it to a motorcycle shop near you that can tune the bike specifically for the modifications you have made -or- B.) You can install a piggyback ECU (like a Power Commander or a Powertronics) and either purchase a tune for your modifications, or have someone who knows how to tune a motorcycle do it for you.

@FaerodynMoto
@FaerodynMoto 3 жыл бұрын
1.) Air tends to take the path of least resistance. If you drill holes in the catalytic converter to improve air flow, then the exhaust gases will flow through those holes the most- so it would drastically reduce the cat's effectiveness at eliminating CO, NOx, and unspent fuel. 2.) The more a person is exposed to carbon monoxide, the more of an impact it will have on their body.... BUT motorcycle/car/truck racers are exposed to it when they race and they're ok... so I think you'll be fine without a cat as long as you're not running your bike in a closed garage.

Hai Nhat Phung - Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. So on the topic of *tuning after a major exhaust overhaul*, here's the exhaust experience I've had: I have swapped a cat-back exhaust on one of my cars, a full header-to-tip exhaust on my other car, and now a full exhaust on my motorcycle. It has been my experience that when you modify air flow without a tune, the performance change you may see is a bump in horsepower but a slight drop in torque. So you lose some low end grunt, but gain some high end pull. The danger comes if it starts running too lean: the engine can overheat, have knock issues, etc. Every situation is different, so proceed with caution. If you plan to swap your exhaust without a tune, I would suggest testing things out carefully at first- maybe a few trips around your neighborhood so if you have to shut the engine off and push, you're not far from home. I hope that helps. :-)

@@brainspace3133 Hey thanks for the honest feedback Brainspace! I appreciate hearing from you so I can make my videos better. I only have my crummy laptop speakers to judge volume levels, so it's a little hard to set them just right for all speaker/headphone types. I think the music was a bit loud in this one though, so I've since lowered the levels of all background music/sound effects to not over power my voice. I'll also make sure not to use these songs again! :-)

Thanks for the feedback! In the 4 years since I uploaded this video, I have learned to keep the volume of any songs I add to my videos down to a more reasonable level. :-)
