Hi Eric Ok so this would be a good video and would be rather long. The next time I’m out on a trail I will keep it in mind. Now to answer what I think you are looking for. What to buy as far as 4x4 goes. I’ll stay high level for now. You want a part time 4x4 system with 2h 4h 4l. The reason most off roaders prefer part time to full time basically because your in 2h or 4h most of the time even off road. I only use 4 lo when I actually need it. And I only engage the rear locker only when I am on really slippery terrain or climbing rocks. Even on the rigs that had a front locker I maybe used it 5-6 times. When you engage the front locker steering gets very difficult because both wheels are turning at the same speed. This not only causes extra binding in the drivetrain it also makes it hard to direct the vehicle where you want it to go. Say your on a steep hill climb in wet or muddy conditions something I find myself a lot during hunting season. Now I’m also climbing bluff roads with steep drop off to one side the last thing I want is for any issues with steering. If it’s wet I will engage the rear locker in 4lo and get a good run at it keeping it in second or third gear. Keep the rpm’s at around 4500 for my Jeep and hang on :). The gladiator is great at this and the Mojave with the 2:72 transfer case means that I can go faster which maintains more momentum in lo range over the rubicon which has a 4:1 transfer case. If you’re climbing over a lot of hard rock obstacles the slower the better which is where the 4:1 is better. Now a full time 4x4 system means your always in 4wheel drive and the computer is sending power where it thinks it needs it. 2 bad things happen with these systems. 1 you get worse gas mileage because your always in 4 hi. 2 there is always going to be some binding in the drivetrain on dry roads so typically these drivetrains don’t last as long and need maintenance. Biggest issue I have with the 392 is that it uses this system and a number of people report drivetrain issues. If you were my son and looking to buy your first gladiator I would suggest getting the Willy’s version. Since they upgraded it 2 years ago it now comes with a Dana axels and a rear locker. Same one that’s in the Mojave I believe. upgraded wheels and tires usually with mud terrain tires. Skid plates and It has upgraded suspension over the base models with the same 4x4 system. It’s not as good as the Mojave suspension or even the Rubicon but it’s 17k less on average. With the xtra 17k you can upgrade any of the parts you want. If you really get into off roading your probably going to want to get new shocks, bumper winch possibly a lift. But don’t waste your time and money with any of that stuff until you use it stock and get some experience offroad. The stock Willys will take you to 90% of the places you’ll want to go. There is a lot more I could say on this topic we’re just scratching the surface and I have no idea what your money situation is. If you spend 60k+ on a vehicle and find out you don’t like off-roading then you haven’t done yourself any favors and I’d feel bad that I encouraged or glamorized something that is not for everyone. Breaking down off road on a trail alone and far from help is a real thing no matter what you drive. It’s your experience, comfort level and your skill that is going to get you home not the vehicle. @@MojaveTrails Wow! What a wonderful bit of information. I like the pickup bed so that is what directed me to the Mojave so I will look into the Willy's too. I like the savings you had mentioned also. Is the $17,000.00 just for the suspension upgrade? I like the 33s, front camera and bed liner and do not care for the heated seats and steering wheel. Also I see some have gotten a $66,000.00 sticker price with almost that same discount as you had mentioned, possibly at a certain time of the year. Thank you for all the help.
