This is 100% a big problem. I think people really just need to pick an album from a song they like, and listen to THAT, instead of a playlist. I do personally have a bunch of playlists, but i still mainly listen to albums. But i get it can be hard. since maybe it's only that one song in the album that's REALLY good. But trust me, it's sooo much nicer to just listen to a full album, then just one song. Also, when i put stuff like EPs in a playlist, i usually put the full EP in, since it's usually just 2-4 songs. And i thought since we are on the topic of music, i could recomend an EP for you guys. I highly recomend the EP "debemur morti" by "white ward". Both songs in that EP are absolutely amazing.

I think it definitely could be problem as well. 15% of people aged below 25 have never listened to an album in its entirety, and that number is rising! With how quickly the modern world moves, it can be hard to listen to an album in its entirety - especially when doing it how you would a movie, without distractions and just immersing yourself in the music. But you are right, it is so much nicer to sink into an album than just a single song. Playlists are helpful and I do make them for myself, but I tend to gravitate to albums. I’m really bad at making my own playlists as I always feel they jump around too much! Tailored playlists by Spotify and Apple Music have definitely helped me discover new music - but the music I love has always been discovered by sitting down with a new album and giving it a fair shot. Thank you for your comment!

That's not the problem. The problem is people have been given more freedom and options about finding music they like. Many don't know how to handle the freedom. I have figured it out. I just play whatever I'm in the mood for. Sometimes, it's a playlist of one bands whole music labeler. Sometimes, it's a playlist I put together off a band I saw live. Other times it's a mix of bands I like. It's bands from all over the world to Europe, Asia USA, Canada, Australia. Years ago, you would never have been able to do this. Many of you don't understand just how hard it was to find music you liked just 20 to 30 years ago. The labels, radio, and MTV controlled what you would listen to and what you should like.

That's why I hate playlist culture, and playlists in general. I prefer to download MP3 to my phone (I have my means) and buy those albuns that I download on Bandcamp, iTunes or physically whenever that's possible. I never listen to playlists (or organize my libary into playlists), and I always try to listen to albuns from start to finish at least one time before tossing them into my massive "shuffle-always-on" libary. Also, I try to not use the skip button as much as I humanly can and only use it when the track currently on is one that I despise so much that I just can't endure the pain. In my experience, this makes so that I'm not choosing the perfect song from my current mood, but letting the music influence on what I should or shouldn't feel, y'know, how it should be. By not knowing what will come next and not skipping it, I'm giving the song a fair chance to make a mark on me and this works, I constantly find myself with new found love for track that I didn't liked in the past, and figured out it must've been because I didn't gave them a fair shake. All in all, what I'm trying to say is that I quite agree with the statement that "streaming is changing our listening habits". These platforms push onto us this playlist culture, this soundtrack of the moment culture, and this devalues the singular experience that music can provide, even if you do use music as a soundtrack of the moment (I do as well, but following that set of rules stated above). I found very obnoxious how every time I login to Spotify or Deezer, how they blast me with 3000 different playlists, 500 of those are "tailored to my tastes", instead of just presenting at the homepage the songs I marked with a like or a heart, instead making me go into separate menus to access this list. I'm just rambling at this point, I have quite a lot to say about streaming as you saw. Great video, definitely gonna check out more of your stuff.

I agree! I’m currently very interested in how music is listened to and used right now, how much of ‘playlist culture’ is due to how big streaming services are monetising themselves. It is very obnoxious opening Spotify and been blasted with so many different playlists, and they push this style of listening onto us as it is far easier to monetise. I must give credit where it is due, I have genuinely found music I like by listening to tailored playlists. However, it’s never a real connection to the track, and rarely more than one track from an album. The music that I’ve fallen in love with is music I’ve sat down and said “hey, I’m going to listen to this album and give it a good chance”. Sometimes I’d not vibe with it, and that’s fine; other times I would genuinely fall in love with the music. I now buy the vinyl of the music I like now because I love to see the big album artwork - and then have no moral panic when I go and download the MP3s! I don’t give my personal take too much in my videos right now because I’m not sure if my viewers would actually care! I’d assume they just want the information and a little discussion. Thank you so much for your in-depth comment and interesting take, it’s exactly the kind of conversation I’d love to foster on this channel!

The alternates should cheap and very very affordable, so that any independent artist can access to it, as a lot of artists can't get their music on many such options such a CDs & Cassettes

Never used streaming services, never will. Listening to whole albums is the way to go for me. Also, I keep ID3 tags brushed and album arts present. This makes my music experience more intimate.

I envy your dedication! Listening to albums whole is definitely the more satisfying experience for me, and is the best way for me to find music I love. I agree that streaming services does detract from the intimacy we can have with music. I try to recapture some of that with vinyl collecting, I've always wanted to digitise my collection (not practical, I know) - but just for the hell of it!

I agree to a certain extent. I'm kinda addicted to using spotify as my soundtrack to everything. Not to mention the urge of scrobbling everything to last fm 😆 I use some playlist to find new music. But overall streaming gives me opportunities that never could be possible. No way I could afford every album I want to listen. And I mainly listen to full albums. Or even full discographies in chronological order. Yeah I'm weird like that 😁

There is nothing inherently wrong with using Spotify to soundtrack everything! It wouldn’t be the most popular way of consuming music if it wasn’t an effective and enjoyable one. I definitely agree - Spotify has given me opportunities to listen to and discover music I’d never been able to otherwise; buying music can be expensive and I would definitely never be able to afford every album I listen to! I think you’ve found a good balance between playlists and albums. I’m going to have to try listening to discographies in chronological order, perhaps over a few days 😄 Thanks for your comment and your take! I appreciate it.

@@mymusicalmusings But I have to admit sometimes my soundtrack gets so "in the background" that I don't even know what's playing 😅It's not that bad if it's some of my favourites or other known tunes that I can "listen to" even if it's barely audible. Not so good with new stuff. But at least it's been scrobbled so I can check them out later without making special note or reminder to check them out later, right? 😆 That's my reasoning. Depends on what artists You're going to listen chronologically - good luck 😁 My greatest fear is to when I finally would want to listen to Buckethead discography. Have mercy... 😆

@mymusicalmusings you don't know how good you have it with streaming. I was born in 1980. I can tell you for a fact everything was being gate keeped to the point people did not know just how big Pop, rap, rock, metal, etc were. When streaming slowly started to come a around and KZfaq took off the world of music was opened. Instead of being small people heard just how big it was. Going back to the days past would be really bad. Support the bands and music you like by buying merchandise or going to shows. Enjoy we live in a time where we can find and listen to music we like from the world over. There are tons of bands I like that come from Europe, Asia, and Australia.

while I don't necessarily agree, as I do normally listen through apple music to enjoy my music, and download albums a lot, its not necessarily a topic you can disagree with, as its mostly fact or logic based. I know for many it is a major problem, and I am glad people are really starting to realize it, because i've notice it too among friends and others i've met. Personally I think its more enjoyable to listen on something such as an iPod, music you actually purchased.... sadly all I have is an old gen 2 shuffle...
@mymusicalmusings

That's exactly why I felt inclined to make a video about the topic! It's hard to disagree with them because it's mostly logical, but streaming services offer a lot of conveniences that can be hard to give up. Do you listen to music on an iPod every so often? I'm looking at maybe trying it out and going back to one, just to see what the experience is like!

@@mymusicalmusings I do tend to use it every so often, but it has been somewhat hard. I don’t have a full time job currently because of school and all, so I have a hard to buying music among other things, so the selection on it has gotten somewhat stale. I don’t have any complete albums on it, and since it has no screen, it’s hard to get what I want out of it, hence why I still stream. I’m hoping at some point I can get a newer ipod of some sorts, or a higher quality MP3 player to really get into using that instead. Overall though I have enjoyed using the shuffle as an alternative. I use it in class every so often when I don’t feel like trying to spend 10 minutes looking for something that will ultimately fade into the background anyways.

I've been thinking of getting into CDs recently! Currently, I buy the vinyl of any album I enjoy because I love having the large album art. However, vinyls are costly and take up a lot of space, not to mention it's difficult to keep them in great condition. CD's would alleviate a lot of that for me - definitely something for me to consider.

If you like the freedom to listen to the music you love, you will keep streaming and buy music from what every artist you like. Otherwise, you are handing back all the power to the major labels, radio stations, MTV, and VH1 to gate keep the hell out of music.
