Hey Iris! First of all love your videos by the way! They really approach the college application process with real integrity to prioritize intellectual and human progress over the superficial reality of the college admissions. Well anyways, I am a senior in high school who is looking forward to apply to Stanford. I have been doing Carnatic Music, South Indian classical musical genre, both vocal and instrumental with a focus on vocal for more than nine years now. I have composed a few pieces, and have also received a diploma in Carnatic music as well from a university. Can you shed some light onto how the art supplemental would work for a non-western classical music style which has a completely different approach to musical concepts? How would the criteria differ, and how would the process work in general? lolll In general I am really interested in mathematics and physics, mainly their philosophical implications, and I have a sense of cohesion between mathematics and music, specifically Carnatic music, on grounds of the emphasis that they place on creation, and I have tried to frame my soft spike as an individual enamored with creation, which I define as a reapplication of transformative principles to the extent of searching for it what all he does and eventually trying to reframe society’s prerequisites for progress. I sincerely apologize for the lengthy comment. Thank you so much! Keep up the remarkable work you are doing, and best of luck at Stanford!

Dawg, the deadline is in two days if I am to submit an arts supplement. I'm one of the best trumpet players in the state (at least my awards say I am) and I have a decent (by that I mean it's bearable to listen to) portfolio, but I have like 2 days to finish some of my supplemental essays, and they could probably be better if I have a few more weeks (but not by like a bunch). I'm dying here, and I know I'll end up deciding for myself, but what do you think? Thanks for actually including what y'all have been able to accomplish btw your flute playing is insane (dat double tonguing pops)

Hi Iris! I am interested in submitting an arts supplement but on Stanford's art portfolio page, they don't have information yet on what the art requirement is for each category (it says "coming soon"). When you applied, were there required excerpts/scales you were required to choose from? Or were you able to choose your own audition materials based on a set of guidelines? Thanks!
@irisfu6929
@irisfu6929 4 жыл бұрын
No there wasn't any required excerpts/scales, but they have general guidelines like two contrasting pieces, etc. You can choose your own materials

This was super helpful! However, I'm still debating if I should submit art supplements with my applications. I'm applying as a music education major, so my applications are already very music heavy. However, I don't have any recognitions for my playing, and I don't know if my playing is good enough to submit, but I also feel that it's necessary to include with my application considering the major I want to study. Any advice on what I should do?

Hi, thank you both for video which is very informative and great effort. I have a quick question please. My sis wish to submit her art portfolio but wish to put her best pieces in the start (which will mean the chronological sequence is missed). How strictly will Stanford look for this chronological sequence, as we also believe having the good ones in the start makes lot of sense. Appreciate your info. Regards Ram

Greetings, Iris! Congrats on getting accepted into Stanford! I would like to ask you a question: Would you mind if I ask you whether you know any ivy league/top universities that tend to accept relatively higher applicants who submitted arts supplement? (Sorry it seems kinda dumb question tho) I also consider submitting a piano/music composition arts supplement!

Hey Iris! I am considering arts supplements for colleges, and I wanted to ask - I’m definitely submitting one for piano, but since I’m also a violinist I also wanted to tack on a violin piece to the supplement (not as skilled on the violin but definitely still considering putting something in). Is there a way you can submit two instruments in your supplement? And do you recommend doing so? Thanks, loved the video!

Hi! I haven't submitted an art supplement yet, but I'm definitely considering it too. I'm pretty sure Stanford only allows one instrument but I don't know about other schools. I think you should focus on your dominant instrument that you spend the most time on to show your dedication.

Hi! My counselor really is recommending that I submit a portfolio for theatre, since I am a grade 8 with distinction in trinity’s acting course, but I won’t have much to write in my resume, because I’ve only acted for my trinity exam and was a lead in my school play, and had a small role in another school play. (Acting is something I did a lot when I was much much younger, but grade 9 onwards I’ve been not very interested in/ had time for it. ) so i don’t really know whether I should submit the supplement or not. What do you think I should do?

Hey Iris! So I am debating whether to send an arts portfolio as a supplementary material or not, because my works are not that professional since it is only a hobby for me. I am passionate about visual art but I am not majoring in art, and I've also heard that sending in not-too-outstanding art can rather have a negative impact on the application (because it may be compared with other students majoring in art). Should I still send an arts supplement? Or just write my passion for art in the essays?
@irisfu6929
@irisfu6929 3 жыл бұрын
I’ve heard that too and was in your exact shoes. I honestly don’t have a great answer - I A/B tested my apps (sent my portfolio to half my schools and didn’t send to other half). In the end, it made absolutely no difference in terms of my admissions. Therefore, I wouldn’t stress too much about it and submit it only if u have some artworks you’re really proud of

How many awards and competitions should you win to express your passion towards music? I am in eight grade and I absolutely love to play the piano and the violin- Although I have been playing piano since I was 7, I only participated in one competition in which I have won State. For violin, I have been playing for 2 years, and have won lots of school awards and a regional award. What do you recommend? In the American Protégé International competition, preforming at Carnegie Hall is awesome! Do you have any ideas on how I can get a chance to implement all of these awesome opportunities and possibly participate in Carnegie Hall? :D

Hi Sarah, usually college ask for under 10 min of music with two contrasting pieces. Each college may have specific requirements which you can find on their website, but it's usually similar to what I stated above. I would say only submit an arts supp if you think it'll boost your application/you're one of the best in your state. Don't submit one just for the sake of submitting one. Good luck and lmk if u have follow-up questions!

Iris Fu I’m not definitely not the BEST in my state but I still can play high skilled repertoire.. but I shouldn’t if it’s not really good right? I feel like it could bring “evidence” to my accomplishments regarding violin but if I were to be compared to other musicians submitting art portfolios, can it negatively impact my application? Stanford is my dream school so I just really want to make sure I do everything right in the application, including submitting a art portfolio to show interest and higher my chances.
@irisfu6929

@@dltjbean I would recommend that you do a comparison between your actual level and that of your awards. If your awards show for your level or make your ability seem impressive, then you can leave it at that. However, if you think your actual playing can add an extra wow factor to your app (e.g. if your actual playing is better than the level of your awards), then definitely consider submitting one. I was in your same shoes (super indecisive and uncertain about what's best) and ended up just submitting it to some schools and not to others haha. In the end, I don't think it made a difference.

if one is really really good at playing sports or music instruments, is it possible to get into Stanford with very low GPA( 2.0) and low SAT score( 50 percent). wonder if you know anyone who got into Stanford with very low GPA , but has extreme skills in either music or sports .

The extreme skills in music or sports would really help. However, the 2.0 GPA seems a little too low. (Given that it's 2.0/4.0). That could keep you out.
