Yes. We know that Tom Holland is not actually Agent Connor. However, we did not know that was a hot dog. In our defense...who holds a hot dog vertically?

As many other comments have stated, everything that you expected from this game, can be found in “Nier:Automata”,which is a masterpiece in its own right,so maybe you should play it after this for contrast with the themes you claimed lacking here

It's probably a part of their real dialogue, tbh. My husband and I consistently talk in quotes whether that be movies, tv, or random internet movies we've seen in the past. Something we are discussing will remind us of a pulp culture item and we'll say the line. That's what's happening here. I bet when they discuss and she writes the videos, these pulp culture references come up and then it gets put in to emphasize a point or create comedy. For Example: "Hollupaminnit" is now in our rotating catalog of references. Haha! Edit: cause I spelled Hollupaminnit incorrectly. Please forgive. XD

I found Conner and Kara’s storylines very engaging and full of emotion. I didn’t ever really feel connected to Marcus. But maybe Kara’s story resonates with me so much because I have a daughter myself and projected my own desire to protect my real daughter into Kara’s pretend daughter.

Personally, I feel Kara's story is the weakest. Don't get me wrong, I love Kara, but you remove her from the game, and nothing in the overall plot changes. Connor's and Markus' plotlines actually end up intertwining and merge part way through the game. But Kara's just off doing her own thing. Feels very disconnected from the rest of the game. Also the "Alice is an android" plot twist is stupid.

Yes. I liked Detroit, but she is right. The game doesn't tackled the AI dilemma the way it should be. Nier Automata is one of the best that tackled existential crisis. It's so thought-provoking that literally dozens of videos are already made to analyze the underlying philosophies it implies. Easily one of my fave PS4 game of all time.

I don't understand the question. A woman trying to secure a child is not personal? A dude abandoned and left for dead finding his place at an unexpected community is not personal? All of the bigger questions were asked within the boundaries of things anybody could experience if taken to the rock bottom of society, often against their will.

Excellent (actual) review of a game that has obvious flaws, yet remains so compelling. I totally agree that the Connor and Hank portions are the standout parts, and a Bladerunner-esque interactive fiction centered around Connor apprehending androids while having an existential crisis would have been not only a more focused project (the three perspectives did a disservice to the game's pacing), but would leave more room for questions about humanity and identity without the historical plagiarism. Great phrase btw, "historical plagiarism", gotta steal that! :p jk

I think this is one of the first reviews we disagree. I dont think the QTEs were entirely useless, it affected me and my friend’s play through significantly. If you were not as confident with QTEs the action route was not always the best if you didnt wanna risk being killed or failing. And although I agree that the game is not as cerebral as it can be when it comes to AI, being a minority who went through some the experiences depicted in the game to varying degrees, it really helped me connect with the story on a different level.

I kind of disliked this particular video because it deviates significantly from the channel's premise. She hardly even mentioned her BF in this and that's kind of the point. I know that these are just barely hidden actual reviews of games but still, that backseat gamer element is essential. _Her boyfriend is a professional editor and he does pretty much everything even maybe the script._ Maybe not the whole scripts but yeah, she makes plenty of references to things and events that a casual gamer like her would likely never even have heard of. That's probably her BF's contribution.

I disagree with the negatives on that one. The qte make so that you can't leave the controller while a scene is going on without maybe missing an action and get a character killed or change the path of the story. And sure it does rehash history but I think that was the point, that whatever new situation is coming up, humans tend to rehash history and make the same mistakes and even some that suffered through that previous iteration of a behavior may now apply it to new victims, so in that way it's kind of brilliant.

I loved this game! Great review, though I found that the quicktime events were a good way of keeping it cinematic while raising the stakes and keeping you engaged. After you said it however, I agree that a game purely focused on the dialogue elements, fleshing out the decision making process and creating more implications for your choices would do this type of game better justice. Those were my favourite parts, winning over jericho's people, getting alice to trust me, and befriending hank are the most meaningful memories I have from this game. Albeit that my heart was pounding as I frantically mashed buttons to try and stop future cops from killing my 3 android besties, I think those sort of quicktime events are better suited in the way that Spiderman employed them. This review is awesome!!!

@@DanDSoul frame the player's choices in the story as the programming, and then as the game progresses, if the story wants to make them seem more human take more control from the player. You could even have a climax where a player android is placed in a situation where they have to make one of two hard choices, save one of two people or something similar and if the player chooses the one that the android has less rapport with the android can deny the player - the analogy for their programming - and show self-aware actions and thought. Or explore sentience in how the androids respond to situations based on their pre-built programming versus things they've learned. Those are just two possible ways off the top of my head.

I think you just sum up my frustration about the game: "it's not about android, it's about race." Instead of letting the player decide whether if they're human or not, this game just screams right at your face: "they're definitely human, don't question, just accept it" And at the game goes on, it's become pretty annoying. The graphics are legendary, but unfortunately the plot can't live up to it. Conor and Hank are the best part about the game, while Makus are the worst, Kara was just meh (especially with the confusing "twist" they pull out at the end) I'm interested to see your thought on NeiR: Automata though. @Gladissims Basically I see that I hadn't red everything correctly. I agree with you on everything, except on "what it means to be human" :). To see how much parallels can be drawn between androids/machines in the game and real humans, I think that Taro was telling that human adopting the behaviors/beliefs of his characters could be called "automata" as well, and that the only difference that matters isn't between human and machines but more between automata and living beings: being human isn't equal to being alive. The fact that there is no human in the game to serve as a living model for the robots seems to support this idea to me.

Watched your Souls review, stopped halfway through and waited to watch it when my girl came home, everything was on point and so relatable...in fact it was so relatable I've started looking for more games that she can enjoy watching me play as I'm a hardcore soulsborne kind of player. She knows death sounds so well i hear giggles from other rooms now. We started with Horizon and she became hooked on the story and the speech trees, moved on to FF15 where when she missed an important bit I'd give her a recap. Gaming has been a part of my life since the early 80's and I've never once, until i saw the direct similarities in that video of yours, ever gave though to the person that wasn't behind the controls experience. And now after that eye opener we look at what game is next together and she far more likely to take the controls herself now. I know it's been long winded, but, essentially i just want to say thank you for shedding light on a part of our relationship (and for others as well i imagine) that while wasn't a problem area, turned the "our time" into more "us" time. The reason why all human civilisations in the past had slaves was because the ones who didn't have slaves got destroyed by the ones who had them. I think you’re given more choices if you deliberately fail some quick time events, the actual binary decisions are pretty sparse

I see you putting in clips from Mass Effect, but when is the review of the original trilogy coming?

You know, Mass Effect did a good job of letting you choose between android's sentience or not. The relationship between Joker and Edi, or between the Geth and Quarians. It would seem this game might've been better taking a queue from that venerable series.

Now I kinda want there to be a mod or something where Hank only says Mr. Krabbs lines. Edit: Just had to show me Legion... I'm gonna go cry in the corner now.

I could have used a "Trigger Warning" for Legion. I wasn't ready for the feels.

Detroid become human still is a huge step from previous games by David Cage. It doesn't have poorly tacked on sex and shower scenes, the child character actually acts like a child and it kind has something to say. I mean the "racism is bad" message is just a preachy mess, but the game (until the ending which ruined it) asked the question about if violence for the sake of change can be justified - and if someone of the oppressed group working for the establishment can actually change how things are. Personally, I would have preferred if the "peaceful" ending would have achieved just an end to the genocide, but not actual equality or if Marcus and his whole group would have died as martyrs. As it is, it just flat out answers the questions it poses with a fairytale ending. Another problem I have with the game is that Lucys and Alice's story doesn't really add much to the overall story. There is the part where the effects of the politics influence ordinary people, but that pretty much is it. Meanwhile, we don't learn who is behind Connors handler (I forgot her name) and why Connor could just deactivate the override of his personality. This doesn't mean that the story is bad, but it's more of a spin-off

The scripts and readings in this channel are awesome! I actually and genuinely laugh at each video. Never get tired of hearing her, "Hol'up a minute!"

I think the best game to make use of that style of gameplay was Until Dawn.

The fact you put RLM clips in this, which makes me believe you watch and enjoy RLM, warms my heart.
