Күн бұрын

Friend of Tested aerospace enthusiast and engineer Andrew Barth visits Adam in the cave, which gives Adam the chance to show and share his 2001: A Space Odyssey space suit he made for Comic-Con 2015! It's the first "reverse" Show and Tell in which Adam gets to introduce new visitors to the shop something from his collection that they've always wanted to see. Adam and Andrew geek out over the design of the suit and its influences in aerospace history.

Great vid guys. Kubrick actually recorded his own breathing inside the helmet. Bit of trivia with the IBM panel on the sleeves: they were only meant for the Discovery suits, they are mostly absent on the Moon suits in the film except for one scene overlooking Clavius Base (a late post shoot pickup) where they needed an extra suit for the scene so a Discovery suit was resprayed silver and that's why the panel can be briefly seen on the astronaut to the left and afterward used in some publicity photos and on the existing suit at the museum exhibits.

I love science fiction, but am not a convention goer in general (three in my life, including one where I performed the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy with a cast of six). The middle time, I was at the convention only for the purpose of doing an event for a dying friend, and stepped away at a certain point to just process my feelings. I stepped into a quiet autograph alcove, and the only other person in it besides me was Erin Gray, the actress who portrayed Col. Wilma Deering in the Buck Rogers television show. A major heartthrob from my childhood (and those of so many) and I wasn't in any kind of emotional condition to speak with her, and although I have met a famous person or two, I've almost never been in an autograph line. I smiled to her from about 20 feet away, and I probably bowed slightly, and she smiled back. I should write to her somehow and thank her for that moment.

What I'd like to know, just off the bat: did you have to walk up a big ramp to get to the lunar "surface"? In other words, did they "build up" the TMA-1 excavation site, with the monolith more or less resting on the soundstage floor? I have seen 2001 more often than any other film and the suits you built grab me in the same way that seeing them in the movie does, every time. Adams reference to the piano hinge on the backpack brought back a memory of multiple takes with one of the lids flipping open and (I thinkI remember) it being taped shut. This is after the astronauts started clutching their helmets. There was obviously no high pitch screeching on the set, so I really had no idea what was happening. Again, 55 year old memories, I don’t want to be older than I am now, but wish I’d been older then. I saw a few of the other sets, but that was the only filming I saw. My son found a pic in my father’s archive of my sister, our nanny and myself in front of an unpainted EVA pod with Keir Dullea in his Discovery jumpsuit. No autograph unfortunately.

In the film and on all the movie stills I have seen, the Clavius suit does not have the left arm pushbutton panel nor the tube from the Back Pack to the helmet. It is true that the suits / helmets were repainted several times for multiple scenes in the movie, In the cases where the Clavius suit was used as a discovery suit, then the air hose was connected.

Your comment about the archaeology of technology and how Chris from Clickspring is also recreating technology using archaeological techniques made me wonder if you have heard of the experiment being conducted in France at Guédelon. This is an archaeological experiment in which they are building a 13th century castle from scratch using the techniques and technology of the era. The project has been running for about 25 years now and is different every time you go there. There is a KZfaq channel of their work, voiced in French but with English subtitles.

It's so strange, thinking about this movie. I've seen it so many times, and have read so much about it, that it's almost like my brain thinks of the events depicted in the movie as a real historical occurrence, like one of the Apollo missions that I am also just barely too young to remember. I guess it's because the movie is just so damned realistic looking. It bowls me over even now that I know as much detail as I can about how they did it.

Arthur C. Clarke swore till the day he died that it was a coincidence (in the book, HAL is said to stand for Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer), and that, if anything, they made sure that HAL didn't feature the IBM logo which is featured so many other places in the movie, because they were afraid of IBM not liking one of their fictional products being a deeply conflicted and murderous supercomputer. On that score, at least, Sir Arthur did say that he addressed the subject with a group of IBM engineers that he was engaged to speak to, some years after that, and found out that all was apparently gladly forgiven, and that the company was proud to be associated with the movie, full stop.

The use of numbers that were easy to work with might be due to the use of slide rules back in the day to do calculations. You don't want to deal with a lot of digits to the right of the decimal point. Keeping things to halves and quarters of the marks on a rule would simplify calculations.

Which is a gorgeous build, by the way: Fran uses materials that she is pretty sure the filmmakers would have had access to, and being Fran, she probably knows better than anybody. Does anyone have an idea of what the 2001 suits were made from, I’ve read that they were leather but it seems to me like Adams is made of something else, any information would be appreciated.

the suit in the kubrick exhibit, A Clavius silver suit, is a knit back vinyl painted with Lacquer which is why its disintegrating slowly.My guess since the screen used suits were repainted so many times they were most likely made from the same vinyl.The 2001 silver suits I did for Adam were a 4 way stretch silver material Adam sent me to make the soft suits for him and Hadfield.

There's a partially respected area of archaeology where people actually try to live in what we think was a house from the past, or try to travel and fight equipped like Roman soldiers. Much interesting detail is uncovered, but there's always that pesky 'what modern man imagines' about it, unfortunately. I recall an archaeologist showing a stone age item uncovered; a bone stick with a hole in one end, that showed signs of wear in the hole. A sceptre of authority if I recall correctly. A horseman from the Asian steppe recognised it immediately as a way of getting a grip on a rope without cutting your hands, and used to 'reel in' an annoyed horse.

If Mark Watney can engineer a supplementary power system for his rover, I'm sure you can do the same for one of the Apollo ones.

There were several silver suits with white helmets during the visit to the monolith on the moon's surface, and earlier during the ship from Earth's landing on the moon.

Much what 2001: A Space Odyssey means, is not in the visuals, as was normal for films made back then. Things like the interference of aliens (the Firstborn) making us into creatures that survived by killing, rather than peaceful and extinct leaf-eaters. That our machines are more pure and so must kill us, or that the aliens are merely sowing and reaping. It's remarkably like the film 'Quatermass and the Pit' (or 'Five Million Years to Earth'), in that respect. Or the monolith being both a 'Swiss army knife machine' and a burglar alarm, to warn the Firstborn that we're loose.

Why the ribs on the suit?
@stevetheduck1425
@stevetheduck1425 3 жыл бұрын
It was believed (from experience of making partial and full-pressure suits for pilots flying at high altitude), that a suit would become very stiff and hard to move in when pressurised at altitude. The suit would be made with corrugations or 'volutes', especially at the joints, so that it could bend while the air pressure stayed the same rather than being compressed, which the pilot would have to overcome with his strength. Very tiring. If you look up pics and vids of early spacesuits, especially before they have their outer protective fabric layer added, you'll see that the NASA space program made suits to fit each astronaut, and numerous others as well, at great expense. These also had wires, cables and a pulley system to enable movement without much resistance. More recently, suits are built up to fit the individual from a kit of parts that are hard items like parts of a suit of armour, with slip-rings at the joints, and an outer fabric layer. There is a photo of the shortest and tallest US astronauts in suits together, showing just ho flexible this design is.
