Episode 16 of SHOW & TELL, is here and it's all about the fascinating world of photography projects. Join Stephen as he looks at Fusco, Funch, Tomiyasu, Hernandez and Baden which is not a fancy firm of lawyers but all photographers who have employed similar(ish) strategies across a range of different projects.
Please subscribe to the channel and Stephen will continue doing these films as he seeks to focus on photography content and not just which new or old camera to buy. And remember, there's still a 'No BOKEH TALK' promise. No bokeh talk. Ever.
For more of Stephen's photography please visit his website: www.stephenleslie.co.uk/ or his Instagram: / step_hen_le. .
Also here is the link if you want to go to the KICKSTARTER for Stephen's new book, MOSTLY FALSE REPORTS the follow up to the now completely unavailable SPARKS.
tinyurl.com/3fh7rv2f
The book is over half funded already so please consider helping make it a reality. Not only will you get a fantastic book and maybe even a print but you'll also stop Stephen from banging on about it forever.

This has to be one of the most interesting photography channels on YT. An antidote to 'how to'. Thanks Stephen.

Excellent talk, Stephen! In 2015 I visited Spain with my family. Aside from the nine hours it took to get there, part of our visit involved a nearly six-hour train ride from Barcelona to Seville. I groaned, loudly. What am I going to do for six hours? I eventually decided to stand between two train cars and pointed my 24-70mm f2.8 lens out a tiny window. I would look ahead as best I could to spot a subject in the distance, prefocus on that area in front of me, and wait a second before the subject appeared in frame to take the shot, but I also panned horizontally to blur the area behind the subject. The immediate foreground was already blurred significantly due to the train's speed. This created painterly, other-worldly landscape shots. I highly recommend taking shots in this way from a speeding train. Never has a six-hour train ride felt like a ten-minute journey.

😂Stephen thanks for your sense of humour. One thing missing living in the US is our (Brit ) humour. I was brought up on the Goon show. I’m so old I remember Tommy Handley.

For sure it is the only way to go, slight difference, I may go out and photograph many things but they all fit in with other shots done at other times. The shot at 10.07, outstanding.

There is also an episode of Midsomer Murders about a photographers rivalry, where taking a photo of the same place at the same time every day helps to solve a murder,

Thank you very much for this again entertaining as well as inspiring episode! This is the stuff that pushes me forward which direction this may ever be. But it inspires me to do even more photography, think more about photography and people and life itself, look more and differently at other people's photography, reading and collecting even more photo books and btw. support your kickstarter campaign by ordering even two books ;-) I've had too much trouble to find a used copy of your amazing book Sparks.

Thanks very much, I’m glad you’re enjoying them. The names of the photographers in each episode should be in the description for each episode, just look under the video. Or put the captions on, they’ll be there too.

Regarding the “reading” project - you might enjoy a photo of a Ukrainian soldier reading in the trench a book of a renowned Yale professor. Both are related to my ‘alma mater’ back home. Just search online: Historian Timothy Snyder meets with Ukrainian soldier who read his book in a foxhole 🇺🇦✌️ THANKS FOR WONDERFUL VIDEOS and TALKS ON TRUE PHOTOGRAPHY MATTERS!

What I have noticed (and this could just be me) about a lot of projects is that many people who end up having their work published happen to be well-known within the photography world, many of whom are photo journalists that decide to publish work based on images with recurring themes. And this might seem cynical but I feel like many of these projects come across as afterthoughts and not goals, essentially noticing that a subject has been photographed over and over again like a habit that’s become an impulse. That being said, do you feel that, in order to be published today, one’s work will only be given the opportunity if someone is pursuing a career in photo journalism or editorial photography?
