Thanks for the introduction outdoors. Makes me appreciate the beautiful weather we have here in s. FL USA. Don't think I could ever live through a cold, snowy winter again. WOW! So happy to see that the Pomelo seeds are germinating. Seeing the serissa in flower made my day! You certainly have a green thumb as far as that plant is concerned. Your Ficus religiosa is one of my favorites. I can imagine Buddha seated beneath it. Thanks for an interesting update video. I enjoyed it early this morning with my coffee.

The Carissa looks especially vibrant. Hopefully it will fair better than last winter. ~ Placing the holiday cactus in a spot where the nighttime temperatures are the coolest may help stimulate flowering.

Love your work. I’m currently planning my first bonsai project - an oak. My best friend just passed away and we always hung out under an oak tree. I’m planning to collect seeds from it next year and attempt my first bonsai. Any tips?
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 4 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a nice project to remember your friend. I would collect the acorns in fall and then keep them cool over the winter. In spring, soak the acorns in rain water for a couple of days and then plant them in soil. They should germinate. Be sure to always protect the acorns from mice and squirrels, they will find them! Even when the seedlings are growing, you will need to protect them from animals until they loose the acorn shell completely, this usually happens in the first year.

When it comes to deciduous trees do you still keep them in full sun all winter? Do you still water them? I’m in Florida kinda close to the Bonsai supply and my elms and bald cypress haven’t even gone dormant yet. We just had a cold front and it got down to 40-45 a couple days ago. I brought all my tropicals inside and they exploded with growth it was insane!
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 4 жыл бұрын
I keep my tropical trees outside until a risk of frost is forecast. The trees then go inside and with the extra heat, they think it's spring and begin to grow wild! Inside I position them in my plant room that has south facing windows, so they get as much sun as possible. I do continue to water and fertilize them over the winter until they can go back outside in spring!

Hello Lee and Kevin, The trees have been outdoors and they get acclimatized to the cold weather as it goes from summer to winter. When the trees are dormant, they can take pretty much everything mother nature throws at them! I keep my hardy trees outside on the benches until the night time temperature drops below -15 C (5 F). My more tender trees are already in the basement and the rest will go inside usually mid December.

Do you not need to winterize the pine trees? Isn't frost bad for the roots?
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 4 жыл бұрын
The trees get used to the cold temperatures as winter approaches and most can survive down to -15 C without a problem. Pine sap remains a liquid even down to -25 C!

When the temperature gets colder it can be dangerous, I bring the trees into the basement for January and February. They are fine done to about -15 C.

@Regult
@Regult 4 жыл бұрын
Only tools that use a bypass style cutting motion, like standard scissors, would give you trouble. we lefties have to learn to use right-handed shears.
@katyb2793
@katyb2793 4 жыл бұрын
Jeff Nelson thank you for replying! do you find using normal bonsai tools left handed works ok then? I can buy left-handed shears, but considering the price I was wondering if it would be better to learn to cut right handed haha. As you would know, some right-handed scissors work fine in the left-hand, and others just won't cut anything. My biggest problem with this has been in a fabric cutting scissors for sewing. I just absolutely cannot use normal scissors - they won't cut. So I was worried I would end up with his problem for bonsai tools..
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Katy, I think most bonsai tools are symmetrical and can be used in either hand, I do have one tool that has a slight offset, for right handed people, but it can be used in either hand OK.

the freezing rain doesn't mess with the heath of your trees? a few years ago we had a freezing rain where I live in the US and I had about 3 trees that where left out from under cover. they didn't make it come spring. blamed it on the freezing rain bc its was only those 3 that didn't make it out of all my trees. now seeing yours its got me thinking It was something else I did to kill the 3.
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 4 жыл бұрын
I don't think the freezing rain will kill your trees, the ice layer will even protect the tree from drying winter winds. I would suspect another factor caused there demise.

even good pomelo seeds look all shrinked and wrinkly sometimes i always thought it was pretty normal for them, they usually take their time... i just got an amazingly beautiful albino pomelo seedling from the worst looking seed i've ever seen... too bad albino trees never survive cuz they obviously need the green pigments to get nutritions from the sun... but they're really really pretty when they're smol
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 4 жыл бұрын
Wow, I've been reading up on albino trees, some can survive by drawing enough energy through the fungus attached to their roots, but as you say, most live a very short life! I have 4 Pomelo trees growing well now, I'm so excited!

@robijakus6860 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheBonsaiZone i will probably try to graft the seedling onto an older citrus tree... the bad part is that i dun have any pomelo trees that i could use so i'll have to graft it onto a clementine tree wich is basically the same thing... they're both citrus so i think it will live on fine... ifyou graft them onto a normal tree they can get the nutritions from the other parts but you'll still have a fully albino growing brench
