I have heard that cool long nights with little day light can induce jades to flower. It is probably because they have been in your green house getting cooler at night! I have yet to see mine flower in Canada though! Really cool.

Perhaps you could air layer it so you get one upright with the existing root base, then a new one where the curvy trunk starts? with the window if its just the frame thats sticking out you could plane it down flush if you dont want to remover the window and the oak sill plate you can cut a 1/4 inch wide 1/4 inch deep channel the on the underside about 1/4 to half inch back that will make a water break and it will drip off and not run into the room.

Trees are looking good! I always bring my ficuses inside for the season when night temps dip below 50 F. I’d be interested to know if they benefit more with the sun over the cooler temps. If that’s the case, maybe I’ll wait until I have to worry about freezing temps before bringing them in.
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 3 жыл бұрын
I think as long as they are kept warmer at night, it good to have them outdoors in cooler weather. I keep mine indoors or in the heated greenhouse until it warms up in the day to at least 10 C or 50 F. When it starts to cool down in the evening, they go back to the warmth. My greenhouse stays at about 50 F at night, unless we get down to freezing weather, then it gets a bit cooler.

Hi Nigel, just a question. A lot of your trees are fairly mature and as such your clip and grow method makes sense. But as beginner of only 3 years or so did you use wire in the initial stages of development? My trees are babies and I use wire to hopefully make the bones of their future structure. I've seen a paradigm shift since I started this journey as people say they want natural bonsai. I started using Australian natives as a challenge and I endeavour to both replicate nature and also create natural art. Sometimes crazy, but hopefully pleasing to the eye. Or mine at least. Would love your feedback on this my Canadian mate. You deserve your 100000+ subscribers. Cheers Big Ears.
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much mate, I haven't wired any of my trees when young, they have just been clip and grow for all their life. I did wire my Austrian pine once, and maybe the odd branch on some of my other trees. All the work I do to the trees is on the videos. The natural style of trying to get the trees to look like miniature versions of their full size counterparts in nature is a personal choice. I think a bonsai becomes more magical if it looks like a real tree in miniature. I find I can't relate to some of the giant wild trunk collected trees with the miniature looking green canopy on top, they seem to have no miniature value. They can end up looking like a collected tree with a manipulated upper canopy!

How long can you keep the Ficus outside? What is the lowest temperature that they can endure? Its 6°C at night where I live and I already brought my trees inside.
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't keep them outside any lower than about 6 degrees, maybe 5 tops! You can easily get frost at 4 C. The soil will stay very cool is left outside overnight at these temperatures and the tree usually stops growing. It doesn't hurt the tree. I find when they are brought inside they think it's spring and start to grow like crazy!

You really have your work cut out for you. Take your time and as the old saying goes: Measure twice and cut once. Remember to take a break once in a while to gather your thoughts and to work safely.
