During the 1980s, two foreign powers France and Libya intervened militarily in the African country of Chad. During operations Manta and Epervier, the French Air Force (Armée de l'air) operated aircraft types such as Jaguar and MIrage F1. The Mirages were mainly responsible for maintaining air superiority and intercepting Libyan aircraft which approached or crossed the so-called Red Line between the government and insurgent forces. Several interesting close encounters with Libyan aircraft occurred and we will examine them in detail in this video.

There are videos from the 2000s showing the Mirage F1 pilots doing low level flights over Chad, and they seemed to have a lot of fun. Apparently, since their aircraft were going to be decommissioned afterwards, they were allowed to push them harder than they otherwise would have been.

It's always so fascinating how you translate these engagements/scenarios into the simulator. Speaking of the Libyans, they also participated in the total sh1tshow that was the Uganda-Tanzania war in 1978-1979. One of the Libyan Tu-22s was sent to bomb Mwanza in Tanzania, but the crew were so incompetent that they only hit a national wildlife park.

The video has a Tu-22M Backfire while in reality the Libyan Air Force used the Tu-22 Blinder, a totally different aircraft, very different looks differently designed. EXCELLENT source of aviation and Cold War information about the Chad conflict during the 80s. You did a great job by pressenting the F-1, MiG-25 and the Tu-22 (Backfire bomber), this in particular being a sofisticated and advanced bomber in the hands of the Lybians. A pair of French Navy F-8 Crusaders were to meet a pair of Armée de l'Air F-100s from Djibouti: for a mock combat training. The Crusaders however stumbled instead on a pair of... Yemenite MiG-21s. Few years ago, while I was at university, my propulsion teacher who was a former fighter pilot told me about the Jaguar that had been shut down in Tchad. One bullet had pilled the honeycomb structure on the longitudinal side at one wing root. Consequence is the wing itself went away. Since aircaft was carrying-out a low pass to straff the column, the pilot couldn't eject

This was a patrol of two planes, one F1 and one Jaguar. They flew over a Libyan column retreating from Faya-Largeau. They informed the French HQ in Tchad. Another pass was requested to estimate the strength of the column. At first, the pilots refused as the column was alerted and a lot of flack including bunch of ZS 23-4 was waiting for them. Order was given to do the pass, Capitaine Michel Croci in the Jaguar did it, plane was hit, went inverted and exploded. As far as I know purpose of the pass was not straffing. 4 Jaguars and 2 pilots were lost during this campaign.

They were two Mirage F1, not only one, and one of them was hit like said in the video and lost some fuel but managed to join the air base fortunetely. I don't know anything about the second shot down Jaguar. Donekle.

All is true, and exists more adventures but it's too long for discribing all, it willt take hours ans hours with the Jaguar opérations. Personaly I have seen the landing gear strut of the TU-22 that was shot down in Tchad at the base Chaumont Semoutiers in Haute Marne in 1993 where was the military camp which looked after the missile HAWK. The mirage F1 arrived in Africa on january 1980 it's because they were equiped with in flight refueling pole and their appelation changed in F1 C-200, C for combat. After 1992, there were the Mirage F1 CT ( Combat tactique), in fact, it's 55 F1 C-200 that the french army transformed it just after the golfe war of 1991, they added the laser guided bombs GBU-12, a inertial unit, a laser telemetric under the noise, there were operational until 2011 in Africa. And for finishing the MIRAGE F1 CR (Combat reconnaissance) started his african experiences on the mid 80's until 2013,they have equiped with reconnaissance pods and a camera under the noise of the plane in the same time they could do bombing raids, it was equiped with only one cannon of 30 mm, the other one was replaced by a camera. On july 2014, the MIRAGE F1 was retired of the french army. Today these planes are flying in USA, in ATAC group, a private company which make training for fighters pilots. These company had bought these MIRAGE F1 for 300 millions dollars from the french governement. The old spanish F1 M fly with DRAKEN company in USA at this moment with the MIRAGE F1-B ( two seats version for the traning and formation of the pilots) from the french army. Since 2013, the Mirage 2000 D is flying alone in Tchad and Niger instead of the MIRAGE F1. On 1986, Kadhafi received american bombs from F-111 on the noise and he lost two MIG 23 against the F-14 Tomcat in the Syrte golfe, so he stopped the military operations in Tchad. Unfortunatly the consequences of the french operation in 2011 in libya was a disaster for all the region and it 's the reason why the french governement had intervened in Mali on january 2013. Today the governement of Mali have fired the french governement.

@@showtime112 It's more easy for me it's because it's french" armée de l'air", so I play in my field. But you have done a great job about these opérations which takes place since 1984. Nothing has stopped nowdays, in 2008, the MIRAGE F1 save the political regime, they had realised straffing opérations against the rebels because they have entered in N'Djamena the capitale. The opeation Ouadi Doum, a jaguar equiped with a AS-37 martel an anti radiation missile, has destroyed a lybian radar station, in the meantime two MIRAGE F1 played the role of the goat for distraying the radar. When they returned to the base they have been purchased by MIG 21 that couldn't catch them. But, I didn't know some stories like the MIG 25 and the straffing opérations. So it's always interesting for exchanging the details.

@@showtime112 I didn't know that, it's because there's the Kfir, the F-4 Phantom, the Mig 23, maybe the SU-22, the F-100 D super sabre, in development nowdays, it takes time but the JAGUAR ??? I ignore that. I think there's a lake of the MIG 17, and the F-8 Crusader. It will be wonderful if all these planes could exist on DCS, I think it will be one day, don't worry. You could do a lot of stories of dogfight for many years for the greatest joy of everybody. For the Jaguar it's only bombing missions, but there's a lot, Africa, Golfe missions, in the french part and english part too. Keep going, don't give up, you will become better and better.
