As an Indian, I have seen the general civilian public of both nations treating dogfights like cricket matches which should be discouraged. Once you are in the plane anything can happen your experience can be failed by faulty machinery so to say that one pilot is better than other all depends on the circumstances of the moment. Pray for peace but if war is necessary treat it as a serious event rather than a source of entertainment. I had the opportunity to chat with couple of retired Indian pilots and the professionalism they showed was exemplary when asked they never boosted about their skills or their kills but said " The conditions that day were favorable for me" and I am sure all Pakistani Pilots would say the same.

That is an excellent metaphor. These videos are primarily targeted for aviation enthusiasts. Those that generally don't care if their nation is involved or not, or who won etc. However, the 'cricket fans' are a necessary evil.

Pakistani pilots would beg to differ. Did you not hear hassan sidiqui boasting about the fake downing of a Sumki? That too after losing a f16B to a mig 21...there is a difference in mindset ..anther fake hero is Alam of 65 fame ...they need fake heroes to prove their "superiority " over the hindus. Our guys do their job and quietly move on. We don't make museums with mannequins or ads making fun of the enemy.

Dear Showtime112 thank you for rendering this episode. I read about it 15 years back and saw a water colour painting of it. To see it in live action is surreal! What stands out is that the AA3 didn't work, most probably because launched at too low an altitude, by this time both aircrafts were already supersonic! BB Soni switched to guns and accomplished a supersonic gun kill, against a very fast and maneuvering target. A rare feat indeed. Thanks again for giving us this.

I don’t think it’s underestimated I think it’s more that people don’t understand how large India and its military is, you have units comparable to the best Nato units and then you have units which are worse equipped then some Taliban. Same for the airforce on the one side you have Su 30MKI and Rafales on the other Mig 21 and Jaguars which are just extremely outdated. I mean it’s the same with Pakistan the Mirage 5 and F 7 pale compared to J10 and F16s. The only place where one side is better than the other is Tanks, the VT-4s are better than T90, Arjun and T72s

@eswube
@eswube 3 жыл бұрын
Actually, it's safety record was not because of the faults of the design, but because it was used for something it wasn't intended for. F-104 was meant to be a point-defence interceptor against Soviet bombers attacking US mainland - take-off quickly, gain altitude and speed, shoot down the attackers and return - all while flying straight lines at high altitude and with fairly light armament load. Instead, it was used mostly as low-level fighter-bomber, flying at low level, often in poor weather, doing lots of maneuvering while heavily laden. Countries that used Starfighters "as intended" - for air defence (like Spain or Japan), actually had losses no worse than other supersonic fighters of that period.
@showtime112

Great Historic Content storytelling as always but it's not only that which makes it worthwhile seeing no it`s the way Showtime112 puts it together with the passion and the time he invested you can make it out and to get it up and across us. The Germans lost 292 of 916 aircraft and 116 pilots from 1961 to 1989, its high accident rate earning it the nickname "the Widowmaker" from the German public. So I would say! Never use something for which it is not made for. The F-104 was also called! The Missile With a Man In It. Early Starfighters used a downward-firing ejection seat like the models XF-104 (modified by Lockheed) and the C-1 downward ejection seat F-104 A, B, C, D The IAF Indian Air Force is the largest operator of MiG-21s. On 11 December 2013, India's second-generation supersonic jet fighter, MiG-21FL was decommissioned after being in service for 50 years. Built under license Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. more than 60% of the Mig-21 were license-produced in India. India built 657 MiG-21FL, MiG-21M, and MiG-21 (of which 225 were Bisons) these are upgraded MiG-21s. I don't really know if that is true. I was told that by today they still have a fair amount of Mig-21s left trying to sell them off.

The F-104 had one mission , engage a enemy bomber fast .And fast it was , but a air to air fighter very limited . The MIG 21 on the other hand was a versatile low cost supersonic fighter that enjoyed a long service life and was used for a lot of different missions . In North Vietnam the Bulk of their fighters were the Mig 19's but they also had about 35 Mig 21's they were held back to engage the American B-52's as the F4D Phantoms were better fighters and as mentioned they only had a few.
@showtime112
@showtime112 3 жыл бұрын
People often comment on that. But that's not so uncommon. Military aircraft are often designed for one specific task and then later asked to do a lot more. Phantom was designed to be the fleet defender but it ended up doing air superiority, bombing strikes, CAS, SEAD.....Perhaps F-104 was more limited to begin with so it wasn't very successful in other roles.
@Leptospirosi
@Leptospirosi Жыл бұрын
first of all , the 104 in Pakistani service was an A, a VERY basic plane with not very reliable engines and basic targeting system and no RWR, or decoy systems.. This being said, the F104 is an outstanding fighter plane in the right hands, which means relying on sustained turn rate at high speed and out accelerating your enemy with ease. If you keep the plane above 380 - 400 Knots nothing could touch you (except may be an F106). The Mig 21 (unless it'sa BIS, and then you should compare it to an S Starfighter) was marginally more manoeuvrable below 350Knots , but the engine was always problematic, forcing the pilot to watch how the power stick was shifted, and above, 350Knots even a Phantom could out turn it, let alone an F-104. Mig acceleration is sluggish and no where near a Starfighter. Here the pilot made a fatal mistake: lack of awareness and trying to outmanoeuvre the opponents diving on him at high speed by pulling in the vertical. The Migs simply had much more energy in that situation. What he could have done is engage in a Scissor and then pull away once the Mig has lost his energy advantage: they were even equipped with gunpods! There was possibly, in his defence, poor communications, with his wingman doing nothing and letting him in a hopeless 2 vs 1 situation. You don't venture in enemy territory with a faulty plane and keep going just to strafe some well defended target: going alone against multiple enemies in modern combat is a death sentence.
@Leptospirosi
@Leptospirosi Жыл бұрын
@@showtime112 The Phantom (at least the B/C/D/N versions) was about as manoeuvrable as an F104G, a heavier plane then the A/C version. the F-104 advanteg increases exponentially with speed. You can download the PDF of the phantom and the Starfighter pilot's handbooks and compare the flight envelopes. What experioenced pilots in a Phantom (nicknamed Rhino for a reason) did when facing more manoeuvrable opponents was to keep the energy advantage and out turn them in sustained turn ratio. This was easily done in an F104, which had definitely better power to weight ratio, and could very easily out accelerate a Phantom. The secret, as Chuck Yeager was telling the Pakistani pilots in 1965 while trainign them, was to stay fast. Unlike today, where IR missiles are almost impossible to dodge, in the sixties and seventies they had VERY short range and faulty seekers, meaning you could outmaneuvre them. That's what often happened in the Iran-Iraq war, The six Days wars ad the skirmishes between Mirages F1 and the Mozambique Mig 21: they were often solved with guns. The problem is that any rookie can learn insitictively how to pull on the stick and turn away, but it takes an experience and tactical pilot to use the plane energy excess to his advantage. As in a chess game you have to plan ahead and bring the enemy whee you want him to be. Here the Atoll seems to have missed and easy target and guns were used to kill the target. This being said, If an enemy jumps on you from above, you lack situationa awarness and your wingman is totally useless, there is very little you can do, even in a 4th gen fighter plane. The Pakistani shouls have aborted the mission rather then risk a strafing mission with a crippled plane in a wing of 2

Actually, the tiny wings help with low level missions. The high wing loading helps contribute to stability at low altitude. If you look at other high speed/low level strike planes like the Jaguar, TSR.2 or some of the Soviet designs of that era, they've all got fairly small wings. The swing-wing designs in that role are compromising performance to achieve a shorter take-off, which was in-line with doctrine at the time which worried about having runways available in the event of war. The designs with longer swept wings were typically optimized for more stores and a longer range while maintaining strictly subsonic flight, a lot of them were naval designs as well (A-6, A-7, Buccaneer).

War in the west Pakistan started on 4th Dec 1971. Pakistan s port city karachi was attacked repeatedly for the first few days of the war by mysteres and hunters of Indian air force during the day time from jamnagar airfield. During the night PAF B57 bombers would bomb that IAF base to keep it from night bombing of karachi. However ,during the day the other combat aircraft of PAF..sabres could hardly be used .as it was known that the Indian base was defended by mig 21s .to keep them busy during the day f 104 was used for hit and run attacks. This was not a dogfight. The starfighter had to fly straight to it's base for it was not having enough fuel. .no maneuvering..so was a sitting duck for a high speed diving mig

Downward ejection, not true, it was tried during development but was deemed unworkable due to front undercarriage. F104 and MIG21 were both designed as high speed interceptors, F104 was faster and MIG21 slightly more manoeuvrable, hitting with gun fire was matter of luck in both aircraft, it is very difficult to get target for more then few seconds, neither type has long endurance, rate Middlecoat was burning fuel he most likely wouldn't reached back to base. PAF in 65 and especially in 71 didn't have any attack aircraft, loading couple of bombs on fighter aircraft was never going to win any war, even today majority of their aircraft are purpose built for defence, for offence they heavily rely on missiles and smart kamikaze drones, With limited resources, that is the only sensible option. Pilots training costs are heavy drain, unmanned fighter and bomber drone is third of the cost, salary, pension, continuous training of human pilot. ground crew all disappear, AI computer brain only needs to be trained once and you can mass produce, with economy of scale further reduces cost. This is why PAF collaborating Turkey and China.

@Showtime112, around 12:00 you show Middlecoat ejecting from his F-104. You have him ejecting upwards. Are you sure that's right? The early Starfighters were designed to eject downwards, though I'm aware that they eventually replaced the downward ejection seat with a Martin-Baker.

Actually, F-104s delivered to Pakistan were refurbished with new engines and upward-firing ejection seats. But even if this wasn't the case, there's nothing I could have done. DCS is not animation software. It's a simulation and I can't do much about the way models are programmed.

Thanks for the comment. This seems to be the event you are talking about. The exact destiny of Mervyn Middlecoat is not known, sharks are only a guess. However, this wasn't a former Jordanian F-104. It was F-104A 56-0773, an ex USAF model and those were refurbished before delivery to Pakistan. They received new engines and upward-firing seats. Jordanian F-104s were only leased but they never crossed the border with India for political reasons. Mirage F1 is waiting for the module release, not yet determined. So far, there's only a mod which looks alright on the outside but borrows the cockpit from other aircraft. The module is developed by a team called AvioDev. You can check them out on Facebook.

So back then, US was giving Pakistan F-4 while India was getting Mig-21 from USSR? Military history is interesting... Did you know that Iran STILL operates F-14's? It was the only country to get them outside of the US.
@showtime112

India was supposedly interested in American aircraft but they had already been allied to Pakistan so they turned them down. India ended up buying MiGs as a second choice but it really didn't turn out badly fir them. Pakistan was embargoed by the USA after 1965 so they started to diversify. Bought F-16s, got embargoed again... they probably wouldn't buy from the USA any more if they got 80% discount 😁 As for the Tomcat, I'm glad it's still flying somewhere.

@@showtime112 @Showtime112 The Gnat is credited by many independent and Indian sources as having shot down seven Pakistani Canadair Sabres[b] in 1965 war 2. The most notable action was the Battle of Boyra where the first dogfights over East Pakistan (Bangladesh) took place. The Indian Air Force (IAF) Gnats shot down two PAF Canadair Sabres and badly damaged one. 3. Another notable dogfight involving a Gnat was over Srinagar airfield where a lone Indian pilot held out against six Sabres, shooting two Sabres in the process, before being shot down.[33][34][35]. 4.The Gnat was referred to as a "Sabre Slayer" by the IAF since most of its combat "kills" during the two wars were against Sabres despite the Canadair Sabre Mk 6 being widely regarded as the best dogfighter of its era.[36][37][38] Source: wikipedia

Znaš onaj reklamni slogan 'just do it' :) MiG-21 je kompliciran po pitanju samog letenja. Osjetljiv motor, visoke sletne brzine itd.. A opet, sistemi su mu vrlo jednostavni. Kod novijih tipa F/A-18 je obrnuto. Relativno lako je savladati letenje ali dok naučiš sve one radarske modove, senzore, sva moguća naoružanja..... Kad bude iduća akcija, kupi ga!
