The man is angry as the name “AngrySnowboarder” implies. But he also promotes a snowboard charity, buys snowboards and gear with his own money to give away, and Instacarted food to anyone who asked when Covid was full lock down and people had no means for meals at the time. I think he also made Tommy Bennet lasagna and brought it to him when he was recovering from surgery. Angry indeed. But just as wholesome as any of us. 👍🏽

Honestly, I don’t watch AngrySnowboarders videos because of his wonderful personality, I watch because that man has an encyclopaedic knowledge of snowboarding gear, so far unmatched by any other snowboarding KZfaq channel. I don’t care he considers me “someone who snowboards” because I don’t have 100+ days under my belt. He’s helped me as a beginner to arm myself with enough knowledge and understanding of snowboarding gear to ensure I don’t get sucked into the marketing machine and buy shitty gear. So I’ll take his grumpiness all day long to be able to tap into that knowledge. He’ll also call out ANY brand for making a crap product. I’d rather have that honesty than a paid for opinion wrapped in a cheery persona. Buckhouse seems horribly self serving and the fact he can promote rubbish Amazon brands really speaks volumes about him.

The main reason Angry Snowboarder didn’t like Buckhouse is because he peddles cheap Amazon gear to a crowd that doesn’t know any better. There is a balance of cost and quality, but Buckhouse’s gear doesn’t deliver on the promises made. Combo that with Buckhouse bestowing himself the title of pro and having weird bro camps and there are a few reasons to not be a fan of his.

I wonder what the rate of concussions are for those that don’t were a helmet vs those that do. Admittedly: If you wipe out going a hundred miles per hour your helmet will do squat, but what about lesser crashes? I am looking it up. Edit: After spending 20 minutes looking it up, it appears at lesser speeds/softer impacts helmets help a lot. It should be noted that helmeted riders could be more likely to engage with riskier behaviour vs those that don't wear a helmet.

One thing I don't get around snowboarding is ageism. Yes, it's a sport and your ability depends on your physics which depends on your age. But I'm fed up with videos like : "Look, this man continues/tries snowboarding at his 75". Or: "OMG, look, it's 2 month baby already doing quads." If you're on the same mountain with me this day - I treat you like equal. Whether you're beginner, pro, old, young, embryo, rich, poor, you have the fanciest snowboard - I don't focking care. You're having fun - I'm having fun - we altogether having fun.

As a powder snowboarder for 23 years and a water skier for 30 years I got to tell you the feeling you so much love in powder as you say in the video, can only be replicated in water sports by slalom single water ski. If you once make a turn on a flat day with a water ski and you throw the same wave you throw on a hardcore powder day you will be hooked for life so if you ever get a chance give it a try. It is 1000 times closer to snowboard powder riding than wakeboarding is I guarantee you that.

so I just broke my upper arm and disqualified myself for this and perhaps the next season of snowboarding and I can already tell that I'm afraid of jumps now since it happened during a messed up landing after hitting a jump of about 3-4m. you guys got any advice on how to aproach it again with a bit of a safer angle maybe some tipps or exercises to get me prepared?
@skyofstorms
@skyofstorms Жыл бұрын
First of all, any jump bigger than like 6ft you DO NOT "just send it". I see people like this in the park all the time get hurt. Second of all if you're new or cannot comfortably link high speed carves do not try. Go learn then come back. Next get super comfortable hitting small jumps and learn how to Ollie at speed. Then ride up the knuckle at speed and imagine yourself going off the jump, maybe even Ollie off the knuckle. If while going up the lip you feel hard downward pressure on your body or can't ride up the knuckle you are way too slow. Also watch other riders and ask them about the speed. If you're not comfortable at that high speed don't hit it. You should feel almost weightless as you ride over the top of the knuckle. Finally, when you actually hit the jump, suck up your knees when you pop right as your board leaves the lip. Grabs will help so learn the basic ones on small jumps. When you land you will have even more speed so be prepared. Even if you go too big do not panic or lean back. As the landing approaches, extend your legs and absorb the landing with your base as flat as possible and your weight even over your board. Then ride away.
@jeffstewart4162
@jeffstewart4162 Жыл бұрын
Progression! Start with flatland ollies, then ollies on a green run, then a small park hit. Don’t move up from the small jump until you’ve completely nailed your landing. Also practice jumping off an edge to control your launch angle. Baby steps buddy. And finally use a balance board in the off-season and create muscle memory on the proper way to fall.

I'm a re-born shredder in my late 30s, pretty much exclusively board in the midwest. With the frequent, short runs, Flow bindings have been a game changer for me. Not quite sure if they have as much stigma as step-ins, but I have to say I would have probably stayed "retired" (riding 0-2x per year) without the ease and quickness with Flows.

Great video Ed! Some thoughts/confessions...1. I ride and LOVE Burton Step Ons. 2. The quiver concept is way overdone. At most three boards (aggressive/charger/carver, softer freestyle, powder board). 3. Helmets - I used to care about others wearing them, but I stopped. Why should I care about someone else's health more than them? Besides, the more people who get injured, the emptier the terrain for me to ride!

As someone that does both ski and snowboard I have to disagree with this. Your first day on a snowboard sucks but after that people pick up things quickly and start progressing to bigger hills and more difficult terrain fairly quickly. With skiing you actually have to learn how to ski improperly (pizza / french fry) before you're even instructed on how to properly do it. Skiing may seem easier to pick up at first, but it is much more difficult to master.

@@forsakenovercast0067 It's hard to explain over text but the main reason is because there is a loss of power on your toe edge due to being clipped into the highback but the highback being able to move forward... Sure it'll engage edge to edge without any issues, but once you're already on the toe edge and you want to drive hard into the front of the boot for some high performance carving, these are no good. There are many other downsides also like lack of support from the strap to prolong the stiffness of your boot, lack of boot options etc, but the loss of power is the main negative. I haven't ridden them personally because there is simply no need to, it solves no problem for me as an experienced rider but the Angry Snowboarder has and had the same conclusion... Fine for causal cruising maybe, not for hard charging. I'm happy with the performance of my Cartel X's and the X est bindings. @@KevinJames1933 I see your point, I have wondered about longevity in terms of the boot stiffness. The only thing that I will say to counter what you said is that when I was living in Breckenridge, there's a group of guys that carve on the wide Donek boards. One of them in particular actually happened to use step-ons and he never had any issues (they were relatively new though so it may be a fluke). Lol I’m not a pow fan but that’s because I suck at riding it and I don’t have a pow board. Although I have had one good pow day but that was because it wasn’t super deep and it was a little crusty which meant staying on top was easier. I love my step ons because of their responsiveness and how quickly I can get off the chair and just go. My boot is a medium flex and I don’t consider it stiff at all (Burton swath). Lastly, I like the step ons because I don’t like the feeling of straps on my feet. I typically tighten my boots when I first put them on and never worry about them until I take them off. I have never once feared my board was going to come off nor have I ever had to worry about my straps not being tight enough. As for KZfaq snowboarders I love them all (buckhouse and Tommie) and I really appreciate the content they bring and the different aspects and point of view they offer). I don’t think the beef between some of them is core vs mass but rather good coaching vs “bad” coaching.

Also while choosing my first board the guys at the store tried to convince me to take a reverse camber 160+ (im 6 2) , I didn't listen, I took Evil twin+ 157, and I love it! It made my day first riding so much more exciting, that I can't wait till my body recovers to go out again. That's a point towards the gear part. Also another point for step ons, if you're a beginner like myself, and you have shitty short slopes like I do,. With step-ons I get to go 1.5X more runs than my buddies. Its irrelevant to people who don't need to strap on and out , but when it comes to actually experiencing it irl, its pretty cool.

Gate keeping isn't a bad thing. It just has to happen with balance. I think Angry Snowboarder is actually a good example of this. Yeah, he will ruthlessly call out someone like Buckhouse, but for people that are really passionate about snowboard culture he's 100% willing to go the extra mile. He donates to charities that support snowboarding and has even gone so far to spend his own money to send hard up snowboarders groceries during the pandemic. The truth is people don't appreciate things they don't have to earn. That said, it's fine line between being a gatekeeper and an asshole...Angry Snowboarder does a respectable job staying on the right side of that line. Buckhouse on the other hand, while he might be a good guy, needs to be called out. He isn't evil or anything...but he also isn't a pro snowboarder or even a snowboarding professional. He's a youtube content creator, and that's fine. He hasn't earned the right to call himself a pro and when people like him do it waters down the value of it for those that have earned it. If you want to have a lasting culture of any kind you need " culture keepers" in order to maintain that culture. It doesn't mean that you can't be inclusive and open...it just means that you don't get to proclaim yourself chief just because you want to.

They're lighter than most bindings, more responsive, and easier to pack. So why would anyone want something heavier, that takes longer to put on, and is less responsive? 🤷🏽‍♂️ Everyone should complain as long as it is all smiles and laughs on the mountain. There's really no reason to not be absolutely ecstatic when you're doing something so amazing.

@@MG-sg2ci I've had all sorts of problems with traditional bindings from the very beginning. Wastes lots of energy putting them on over and over. Then you start cursing when you're tired and miss where the strap goes. 🤣 Stepping on them and moving them out of the way when trying to get your boot in. The constant adjustment (is it too tight? too loose?). They always pack weird and clank around. So I was more than happy to get rid of them. When I tried out the step ons last season I was amazed at how little there was too them, I love the simplicity. I got full on ions since I tend to like stiff boots for my riding. Plus I hear if you keep the front ankle strap loose they work like more flexible boots for walking around, but I haven't tried them out yet though. I have another 3 weeks of waiting before then. 🤩

Seen enough people bang their heads on the snow this year and this is my first full season, 48 days. Just started last season with 6 days. I would have had more if not me slamming the back of my head twice in a row 3 days apart near the beginning of the season. My neck and shoulders was stiff for over a month. I don't think I'm even fully recovered. So yes, helmets are going to save heads no matter what. Just let the people decide if they want to or not. Twice saw two guys laying in the snow dazed cause they didn't wear helmets. The current most memorable one is one teenage kid was with a bunch of friends hitting a roller that was pretty steep. I was chilling in the snow resting my legs. I look around and his friends were huddled around him. His face was dazed and it took a good few mins for him to get it all together. No helmet just a beanie. Goggles were flung off his face and beanie in hand. The adrenaline and friends being around probably got him conscious enough to ride safely down. Mind you this was on a green run at Northstar.

I've been riding them for 3 seasons and have never had an issue and don't know anyone who has ever had an issue either. You've got a point on the boot stiffness but for someone who works on the snow, the convenience and speed of skipping the straps makes the trade-off worth it in my eyes.

(LONG POST) I've been riding the mountain since I was a kid an at the age of 11 yo switched to snowboarding and after almost 17 years snowboard regularly I can say that skiers have a lot of advantages that we riders don't... 1. Moving forward is more natural than moving sideways. You can tell this by watching two kids learning each spot, skiing and snowboarding. It is incredible how fast can kids learn skiing, whereas snowboard kids need a lot more time to develop the skills and strength necessary to ride properly (tilting, board torsioning, etc)... 2. 4 edges and 2 additional holding points (poles) will give you more grip and stability than only 2 edges. This is why we snowboarders struggle a lot more than skiers in hard snow, icy and/or foggy conditions... 3. A small contact surface will make you faster. Skiers will ride in average faster than you even if you're a high skilled snowboarder... if you sit down a spring day at the chillout area of your local snowpark and watch the jump line, you will see most of snowboarders struggling to clear the knuckle whereas skiers will get to the landing without any problem at all. 4. More versatile at jibbing. The 2 edges give them the ability to spin faster and press the rail. If you watch a game of SKATE between 2 skiers you will see crazy rotation and presses that you have never imagined or that are nearly impossible with the snowboard... 5. They can turn faster in steep powder terrain and they are less likely to hit rocks and wreck gear than you. 6. When it comes to backcountry (ski touring vs splitboarding), they can traverse up hill through steeper terrain because of their narrow skis. In addition, they can "ski cut" and test the snow pack stability before dropping down and in case of avalanche, they bindings would release instead of dragging you down with the whole slab... 😵 Despite all of this I'm still loving snowboarding ♥️

Skiing does seem more natural vs snowboarding. I've never tried skiing but both of my sons have picked skiing up quite quickly. They had been struggling to snowboard. We typically start the season with some all day lessons. While they can get down the hill they struggle to get consistent s-turns. They tried skiing and after one half day lesson they could get down green runs no problem. When they were starting to learn snowboarding they wouldn't leave the beginner area but on skis they were on green runs in no time.

Great video aside from the helmet part.. showing a search result from 2013 doesn't make a case as it all depends on how the study was done and how much has equipment has advanced since then. I went snowboarding for the first time a few weeks ago (experienced skier), and on one crash caught the downhill heel edge and hit my head so hard that by the sound and impact of it I thought I might have cracked a brand new helmet. I had whiplash symptoms in my neck for a week, if I laid flat on my back I couldn't lift my head to get up, had to roll to the side and over to be able to get up. Zero concussion symptoms, you won't ever convince me that the helmet didn't save me from a serious concussion. I've never worn a helmet skiing, can't remember the last time I fell, but figured I better to try snowboarding and boy am I glad I did...

@@ShredSchool1 By no means do I want any kind of pissing match, but you said and I quote "did you know that helmets have not significantly reduced mortality from ski and snowboard accidents?" while showing a link saying the same thing. You did also say you wear a helmet and encourage others to do so, but that quote and article shown downplayed the effectiveness. If you go to that article and read the next paragraph it attributes that finding to "more skiers and snowboarders are engaging in risky behaviors: skiing faster, jumping higher and going out of bounds". To sum that up, if people are engaging in riskier behaviour and the mortality rate didn't change, then the protective equipment (i.e. helmet) is doing it's job rather effectively.. 👍

love the video and everything in it, but I will comment on the reverse camber boards, and as someone who doesnt like them either, they are however really good for the first timers/day one beginners. Do i recommend someone buys one over traditional camber? No, I'd even recommend a beginner buy a trad-cam board, but I would also recommend they at least get a lesson or two in before on rentals (9 times out of 10 it'll be a rev-cam board, especially here where i am, a lot of the boards they supply for rental are rev-cam). For a beginner getting the very basics down, it'll greatly decrease the risk of catching an edge whilst learning at this stage. It'll help them bring that board around when learning the fundamentals for turns and again, without the possibility of catching an edge. It has been a few years since i've boarded, and I loved park boarding most when I'd go. Seriously looking into getting the gear and going off for a week or two to just get myself right back into it. I have a burning desire to take this quite seriously and make it something I stick to, and, off topic this question, would you recommend the Salomon Huck Knife? I've got plenty years experience boarding, but it has also been plenty since I've been so would love to know if going this way for a board is a good shout? (I just had to throw that in there lmao)

1-I haven't seen that obssesion with stances to be honest, just tips like you did in this video, only that everyone has their own opinions while giving advice, and I haven't seen an invalid one yet, yours included even though mine is different. 2- I think that more than an obssesion with gear, is that on one hand, most of the channels are wither shops or brands, and they have to sell the products, and on the other hand, creators have to make content. though I must admit that I am a gear junkie because gear is like candy to me. I am a many boards quiver guy, and I love all of them, but it's true that I have two specific board that I wouldn't change, ever, the Arbor Terrapin and the K2 Split Bean. But, boards get destroyed, and in many cases, they stop making them, like my beloved Nitro Uberspoon. Let alone the boots. I don't know for you, but my boots always last one season, with the exception of the Insano, which lasted 2 and a half seasons. 3- Yeah I agree on that. Wearing a helmet is good, of course, but those people in the comments are a pain in the A. Besides, most of the weekend warriors nowadays wear helmet because it's trendy, period. 4-I don't like Angry for many reasons, especially because some of his responses to questions are like if you were reGarded, and it's even worse with some of his toxic knowitall fanbois. But I admit that he is 100% honest with his reviews. the other channel you mentioned, yeah, it's not my cup of tea either. 5- Dude, spot on. I have a friend who is a really really good rider, but he doesn't like pow and freeriding. I always ask him, "how, HOW??" lol and he is always like "don't know dude, I just want pistes. The few times I convinced him to go with me for a few pow runs he ended up absolutely stoked, but nah, he doesn't want to repeat. I just don't get it. Pow is just the best in life. 6- I agree but disagree at the same time. I've been riding for more than 30 years now, and I started when step-in was big, even at freestyle (If I remember correctly, Guillaume Chastagnol was one of the biggest at that time and used to ride step-ins). The problems with step-in are the same nowadays with the step ons: lack of compatibility, a stupid useless strap in the ankle, and plastic parts that can break without noticing it and can malfunction ending up in disaster and hospital, especially for the new step ons for splitboarding, where many times you have to climb rocks or hike on uneven terrain and the boots suffer a lot, and you can't use boot crampons on steeper terrain if you have to climb. Let alone at very deep fresh pow, to step in those bindings is crap, believe me, I've tested it. I've always said that the future is some kind of step in, but the closest we are at it's the Nidecker Supermatic, which looks awesome and to me, that's the path. But, as always, everyone has their own experience with the step ons, and many people love them. We all are different. 7-Again, this a matter of different opinions, but as with the step ons, if you see all the top pros, they all prefer classic camber, for good reasons. I lived through the banana madness, 3 straight seasons where you couldn't find a regular camber board anywhere, all boards where either flat or rocker. I had that phase, where I loved rocker, because I started to be less in the park, and more in deep pow runs, but I liked park laps, mainly jibbing because I was getting older and I started to get hurt at big jumps. But after 4 or 5 seasons, I came back to classic camber because it's the best to me, except for powder. For pow, rocker is just awesome in my opinion. But yeah, you are absolutely righ: you can have fun in pow with any kind of board. That's our main advantage over skiing, because they can't have fun in pow without the proper gear. Another thing tha pisses me off is how the shops sell the rocker because "it's easier to learn". Yeah, maybe ot's more forgiving but the camber is more demanding, so the technioques are better learned with classic camber. My opinion (it's just my opinion) is that rocker is for experienced riders, because with more than 20 years of being an instructor, I've seen a lot of clients who couldn't control the board properly, and when I told them to rent a camber board, they proggressed a fkg lot. Again, it's just my opinion based on my experience. 8-LOL Ok, I disagree here. But, if it was my video, I'd have said this: "People, especially parents, whose kids want to learn snowboarding but they say that they must learn to ski first". I have many clients whose parents always ask me this question, "Do you think it's better for them to learn to ski first?" And I always respnd. "If your kid wants to learn basket, why should him learn soccer first?". And it's because there is still this misconception among tourists about snowboarding, that is some kind of stupid activity, easy to learn, not a real sport with complex techniques, kind of a toy for kids and drug addict misfits. But regarding your take, I've got many skier friends, which are absolute beast, and they love it, and we all feel the same and like the same. They just use two boards and don't go sideways, that's all. And, the first steps for beginners are waaaaay less hard, because they are always standing up and they have got two canes for extra support, so I also understand that. But your point made laugh, not gonna lie. 9-The hate is because we all think that we are all fkg pros, for some reason, so we often leave stupid comments like mine lol. Fun video mate. Love the footage by the way, nice style and tricks!!

Team Angry Snowboarder because he’s hilarious and analytical. I must’ve been late to the party hating on Buckhouse. IDK anything about him. I’ve just not found better breakdowns of snowboard characteristics anywhere as good as Avrin’s. As for this list, I agree with 8 points made. IMO reverse chamber(rocker) boards are great for beginners and only for beginners. Great spiel and sick riding.

Skiing vs Snowboarding is like Cars vs Motorcycles. Yes, it's possible to have fun with 600hp car, but it's still kind of boring. I would argue that step in bindings come handy if you would live in shitty country where longest hills are 700m so it takes almost more time to get in the bindings than go down the hill. (I'm just a newbie so I don't know anything about these) I would Still buy step ins if I had the money (Not the burton ones tho).

As step in/on bindings go, the best I've seen are the Nidecker Supermatics. Almost like regular bindings, works with any boots and you step in to secure, pull a lever to step out. Problem is they're a bit on the pricey side!

The supermatics are alright. I rode them last year riding as a final prototype, they are really heavy and had a couple moments with them not working at all. So far the best step in system seems to be the Clue bindings from my industry prospective. I would try step ons but Burton boots don't work for me.

Definitely on team angry here. Most of the KZfaqrs are just about making money and pushing shit supplements to their viewers. How is that good for snowboarding especially with young kids watching? Most of them will sell their souls to whoever pay them.

i am little late i agree with most point but a few things i would like to say to point 3: Helmets dont just stop you from dying but also a lot of different injuries on your head and the reason Snowboard Influencers should wear them lies in the name they are influencers so if they show its "cooler" to not wear a helmet the influence people into not wearing helmets. to point 8: Skiing and Snowboarding are way different sports i dont get why its your decision which one everyone should be doing Yes there are a lot of tricks that look better on a snowboard than on skis but there are also tricks you cant even do on a snowboard that you can do on skis. Also there is more to winter sports than just tricks skis give you a completly different feeling while riding. One is not better than the other but they have a lot of different reasons to appeal to people and also appeal to different people

"Boarders who dont like pow" bro I mostly a skier and even in ski... I simply cannot get it ! And for snowboard its even worst since its the best tool in deep pow ! Plan to get back at it mostly for those big powder days. I mean Im a ski coach, teaching youngster the pleasure of ski racing. And yet I always tell the kids that I live and breath... for powder days. And I have yet to meet a kid not completely hooked out of his mind after tripping under my guidance at the end of a powder day ! They may get scared at first since they "cant see whats under the snow", but they'll always finish with "powder is the best"... because it is! Never got the hate between us snow lovers ! Started skiing in 2000 and I'm glsd its kind of fading off, always felt ridicule to me.

I agree with some of the stuff stated in this video. But two of the points made that stuck with me were the comments about helmets, and reverse camber boards. Yes, helmets may reduce the mortality rate of snowboarding. But that’s not the entire story, head trauma injuries can last a lifetime, and these influencers on the platform not wearing a helmet signifies that their audience doesn’t need to wear one either. Psychology goes way deeper than a statistic found on google. I would love to see the source of that study, because a random statistic showed onscreen for less than 5 seconds must be credible. Second, reverse camber boards are all about feel. Why do some people prefer fish boards or paper boards when it comes to skating? It’s all based on personal feel and the goals of the rider. Saying you “quit snowboarding” because of a board shows that you may not be as invested into the sport as you say you are. I’m not you, but one board doesn’t stop someone from pursuing their passion. To anyone that reads this, thanks
