It sometimes annoys me when people think that interracial dating solves racism between those communities. I think that's why people on social media uplift interracial relationships so much. I think there are people who think that dating a Black person (or praising interracial relationships) makes them more liberal/less racist automatically.

But I think we forget that interracial couples always have a danger hanging over them. Like the KKK specifically targeted interracial couples due to the realization that there is literally no difference between people of different skin color.

That's true your point makes 100% sense with some people but most people I've met and seen who are in interracial relationships if they genuinely love and care for the person they are with they don't do it for the reason of/they dont think they going to come across more liberal or anything they're dating someone because they want to but I definitely agree SOME people as you said definitely have that mindset and it's strange ngl.

I can write a whole dissertation on why Black men and women date who we date based on conversations my friends and I have had. Dating someone Black when you're Black isn't just about race. Sometimes we don't want to explain our experiences as a Black people to a White partner. It can be exhausting to be explain why what their friend said was problematic, etc. Or sometimes they will make concessions/excuses for racist family members.

This makes a lot of sense. What do you think about black men dating white women and black women dating white men? I’ve seen comments before from people in the community saying black men and women need to treat each other better but I never understood where this stemmed from
@random-dm5md
@random-dm5md 2 жыл бұрын
@@tatum2739 I'm a Black women so I have a bit of a bias but I feel like when Black men date White women they often put Black women down at the same time which then creates this tension and Black women feel undesired by Black men. One symptom of colorism is that dark skin is tied to masculinity and I definitely feel like a lot of Black men believe that. There is colorism in other communities but I think it hurts more if another Black person is colorist against you.

@@random-dm5md I’m sorry but how is a preference putting down your race? If anything you should feel empowered that the man that didn’t see your worth, is no longer part of the dating pool. You have to have self worth and love yourself in order to do so…. But some black women can’t do that which is why you feel betrayed. Cause sweetheart, men aren’t obligated to date to their race.
@rachaelvaughan1017
@rachaelvaughan1017 2 жыл бұрын
@@thatbeaatcch9884 It's not really the preference thing that's specifically the issue but it speaks to a larger issue that we all ignore and although I'm not a black woman, I've spoken and listened to several black women talk about this issue in depth so I probably won't get it 100% right. There are societal standards on what is considered "beautiful" and these standards are so deeply implanted and it's reinforced by the media and in everyday experiences and even family and then add onto that having someone of your own race saying and reinforcing those negative views is extremely hurtful all the while people of other race's are getting procedures done to look like black women with the lip fillers and butt implants (example The picture Kim Kardashian did with the champagne going over her head and into a glass on her butt).
@louenatnine51

@@thatbeaatcch9884 it’s not the preference, it’s that these men VERBALLY state their preference for non-black people is only due to their problems with black people, not the positives of their non-black preferences. Your response was wildly condescending and brash.

@Bob: Swahili is usually the African language discussed in English-speaking schools as its the easiest African language for English speakers to learn. The language has the same alphabet, minus X and Q, and (like English) there's no lexical tone/change in pitch that determines the meaning of a word. This makes the language easily readable by English speakers - the words sound like they look (to English speakers), so we only have to learn the meaning of the words, rather than (what we find) "difficult" pronunciations. For this reason; Swahili is often the language used as an example when teaching linguistics to English speakers. Considering this is the first time I've ever used anything taught in my college linguistics classes - this comment cost thousands! :)

I have had this conversation with many other gay black men and they always talk about exclusively dating black because of shared history, trauma, or experiences. They also assume, since I am in an interracial relationship, that I ONLY date and am attracted to white men. Love isn't about skin and my blackness shouldn't be reduced to our collective historical trauma or experiences as POC just so that we can be eligible to be in love with another black person. There are so many other ways to relate to people and you'd be shocked to find out a lot of them aren't trauma or race related. I don't understand dating someone simply because you share the same amount of melanin. THAT IS NOT ENOUGH. It isn't enough for me and shouldn't be enough for anybody else that is of color when it comes to loving another human being. There is more value to dating as a POC than just our skin and experiences and all of that value can be loved, seen, and cared for by whomever we choose.

You seem to be making assumptions while crying about people making them about you, but that's typical. No one is solely dating a person BECAUSE they're black. If a person wants to date black people, exclusively, that doesn't mean they're going to date every black person they come into contact with. OBVIOUSLY other things will connect that person with the people they choose to build a relationship. Blackness is just a pre-requisite just as, for some, a certain socio-economic status, language, location, age, and gender may be pre-requisites. Let's use our brains.

I think we should have a good "Social Construct" conversation because people who like to split the hair at "Its a social construct so it doesn't exact" (which is not a direct Bob quote cuz yall know how he gets when he's misquoted even A TAD lol) are starting to lose me it is 2022 I don't think we need to get lost in what reality is anymore. When it comes to the Black Experience, I think a Social Construct is apart of our existence. Just because it doesn't exist doesn't mean it can't happen because human beings are constantly evolving what can and cannot exist. Pulling the Social Construct card might as well be the new version of giving white people "an n-word card" because just because you can say it doesn't mean it won't get you fucked up/just because you said what you said don't mean what you said isn't some bullshit lol the definition of Social Construct is "An idea that has been created and accepted by the people in a society. Class distinctions are a social construct" and I personally read that and go, "ok, so its an ACCEPTED idea by the people in this society" that means people all around you have accepted ideas other people put on you and put on you and put on you until it was put on you so much we now call it and all know what a Black Experience is people literally willed this into our reality. TL;DR (cuz this was so much chile jeez I just wanna hear yall talk XD): Get rid of the "Social Constructs don't exist" argument or put a pin in it for later because we have bigger fish to fry. We literally had to stop talking about the black experience to discuss if it was even real and the real social construct is thinking we have time for that.

Agreed! Seriously hate the whole 'it's a social construct, it's not real so just ignore it' mentality. Money is a social construct, does anyone seriously think that means it doesn't have any kind of bearing on how people live? Maybe if you wanna talk about our ability as a society to tear down or reshape social constructs with enough time and effort then I'll entertain the thought but in the here and now things like race, class etc. have an effect on our standing in society and how people treat us so it's not helpful to act like they don't exist just because they're 'made up'.

As a multiracial person, I’m often weary of dating period. There’s this tendency white ppl have to fetishize me or give me backhanded compliments or tear others down to lift me up (you’re not TOO dark, you’re not ghetto, you have GOOD hair). I feel like black men put me on this pedestal or claim I’m “too white.”

on the note about Jewish people wanting to date other jewish people, it is usually purely religious. There are many jewish people who prefer to date other jewish people, but it is usually bc of the religious law, which states that you can only marry other jewish people. Many religious jewish people will date non-jewish people, and will only talk about conversion if it comes to marriage. Sidenote converting to Judaism is very complicated so its not super easy lmao

There's always some friction in dating outside your race, ethnicity or any other kind of cultural in-group, around the world. Yes, the Black experience of racism specifically adds to that kind of insular thinking, but it would still be there, even if America never had a history of racism. Perhaps not in the same way or degree, but yeah.

We both have tons of personal stories and opinions on inter racial relationships. Sometimes you just fall in love with someone and and you make it work. You see beyond color and gender. I am a Bi, white lady married to Bi Black man. I’ve dated all types of people in my lifetime, but my husband became that person. We face more scrutiny from our own racial communities than society by large. Often feels like a never ending battle that neither will understand. U.N.I.T.Y
