Prednisone and other steroids are commonly prescribed medications for managing various inflammatory conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis.
These medications work by reducing inflammation and suppressing the immune system's response, thereby alleviating pain, swelling, and stiffness associated with rheumatoid arthritis flare-ups.
While they can provide rapid relief from symptoms, long-term use of prednisone and steroids may lead to several side effects, including weight gain, increased risk of infections, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, and mood changes.
Therefore, doctors typically prescribe them at the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration possible to minimize these adverse effects.
It's essential for individuals taking prednisone or steroids to follow their healthcare provider's recommendations closely, undergo regular monitoring, and discuss any concerns or side effects with their healthcare team.

Prednisone is causing my sister so much agony. It’s affecting her body so bad but they haven’t offered an alternative. Praying for her to get better and stop these drugs. Prednisone can be fatal.

As an RA patient for more than 25 years, I've seen how RA meds and treatment options have progressed. Steroids are my #1 most hated because of the most visible and immediate side effects. I get cranky, bloated, heart racing, difficulty sleeping. But I do not resist when the doctor prescribes it for a very short time just to get inflammation under control.

After having a horrible side effect from methotrexate my doctor gave me prednisone. These are horrible drugs and although I feel somewhat better (in regard to my inflammation and joint pain), I feel worse from the side effects. My side effects happen no matter what drug I am given for RA. My doctor is pushing biologics on me, but after trying these other hard drugs I am going to take my chances with diet and herbs, which is what I was doing in the first place.

I have been on steroids for 50 years. Is a nightmarish drug. I've had all the side effects Plus... You didn't mention the moon face, the constipation, travel with your kidneys your pancreas and your gallbladder in time... It's taking me 50 years to get down to 5 mg per day. The only Plus my face doesn't look as old as I am 50 but I will be turning 75 in August, but all my muscles have pretty much deteriorated. Keep up the good work.

I have been recently diagnosed with Chronic Ulcerative Colitis. 😢Rx prednisone 3 weeks ago. Headache solar sensitive, depression, mood swings, anxiety no sleep and I’m crying daily for my 10&11 year old daughters who are now on Summer break from Elementary school and should be enjoying their summer break but, I am so sick not only from the inflammation in my large intestine but from all these Dang side effects. My poor husband and my kids are ready to run away from me and I want to bang my head against a wall. I was Rx 150 pills to take over 8 week taper. I just started week 3 2 days ago. 😢 I just want it to be over now. Sending you Big Hugs Lots of Support and Strength. Prayers for you on Angel Wings 🪽 are sent

I find it surprising that so little proper information is provided about Prednisolone given it is so often used as a drug of last resort by many practitioners. I have read so many scare stories on the net about adverse side effects, but there is no mention of what dose the patient is on, though often it is ridiculously high. Prednisolone is a dirty word in the drugs world, which I believe is very unfair. It is very important to understand the difference between a physiologic and pharmaceutical dose. The former is a dose less than the amount of cortisone produced by the body (approx 35-40mg per day). The latter is anything that exceeds this. Most problems arise with a pharmaceutical dose as the body starts relying on the drug to produce the cortisone equivalent and that is why it is necessary to taper off the drug slowly to allow the body to start producing it's own again. Whereas at low doses of around 5mg or less, the body is still producing cortisone, so it is possible to stay on the drug for longer periods. It is also important to note that this drug will effect people in different ways - evident from reading the case histories above. I find the drug extremely effective with very few if any side effects, but other are not so lucky. For me it's a quality of life decision. I try to be sensible based on the information I have discovered about Prednisolone - which as I say is pitifully little. I partly suspect that this is the case because the patent has expired, so drug companies can find little incentive to do further research - no money in it! It also seems to do a much better job than many of the more expensive drugs. I suggest everyone try to read a book called 'Safe Uses Of Cortisol' by W Mck.Jefferies. This is the most comprehensive study on the subject I have found, and will prove a mine of useful and insightful information for anyone thinking about or taking glucocorticoids. Unfortunately the book can be a little expensive, but well worth it.

HI Doctor I was diagnosed with GCA I had raging inflammation and was started on 60mg gradually tapering. I have a Tozcilizuma injection weekly. Prednisone saved my life by reducing the inflamation. Sadly until another drug found predsinone is a necessary drug.

Currently experiencing what I think is myopathy 5 weeks after finishing a 7 day reduced daily dose of prednisone. At first I felt so weak and shaky that I thought the steroids triggered blood sugar issues. I’m going back next week and hope to get answers. I will never take it again!

Thank you doctor for your information…..Ive been treated for RSV since Feb 9th……I was given Prednisone and a nebulizer as needed. It’s now April 2, and I’ve just finished my last script. My lungs are feeling better but the side effects from this drug is very real. I did have sleeplessness, I am experiencing swollen feet and legs, and arms, I definitely have put weight on, I do feel an occasional pressure in my chest which is concerning as I have HBP . My next appointment is Thursday and this will be my next discussion with my doctor. I truly hate taking drugs, but on the onset of this virus I just couldn’t breathe. Hope this helps with your inquiry.

I have been on prednisone w methotrexate since 2016 and cannot go lower than 5 mg daily. Every time I try to taper off, my symptoms flare. I recently tried again to taper and had to go back on a high dose to clear the flare and get myself back to the balance w the 5 mg. Now i have weight to lose (again) and glucose and high blood pressure to regulate AGAIN. I know it was worth a shot but i have lost another year to this issue have gone backward in the progress i have made w my health. frustrating. Any advice?

Ho Doctor. I took a short course of Prednisone in decreasing doses for three months because of respiratory virus. Prednisone was the only thing that kept my lungs from closing down. I recovered from the respiratory virus and I didn't have any bloating or mood changes and I have been off the Prednisone for one and a half months now, but I've noticed that I am walking with a limp and I feel like my right leg is weaker than my left leg. I am doing leg exercises to build up my right leg. Will this leg weakness be permanent??? I was only on Prednisone for three months. I'm am 59 years old. Please help me doctor, I hope that my right leg will feel equal to my left leg. Should I use leg weights on my right leg?? I can't stand this limping. Please answer. Thank you for your help.

Hi dr, I have a question that may seem a bit strange, but if you can just provide me with an answer I would really appreciate it. If someone takes prednisone lower than 0.50 mg like for example 0.30 mg a day, will this cause serious side effects in the long run?

😮I've been on and off prednisone for 40 some odd years now. I know I didn't have much for options but I'm certainly paying for it now. I have osteoporosis, osteonacrosis in my left knee just found out my right tibia and femor both are necrotic. My adrenal glands have failed. I have crohns disease and emphysema, copd, loaded with arthritis, spinal stenosis in my neck and lower lumbar spine and have been bed ridden for several months with a compression fracture in my T8. I'm currently tapering very slowly and I'm taking 28mg at the moment if I even cut back a half mg my whole body suffers

That may be the number you need to stay at for now. Be patient. I am cutting down but sometimes I have to stop or go back up 10 mg for a little bit of tine. I am also using nutrients for the deficiencies that prednisone creates. I am not perfect nor are you. We choose little of our life. It what God has put in place long before our birth. Just be patient. Pray and have faith.

I just got prescribed this for the first time, for inflammation related to chronic non healing wounds that are being treated… I’m scared to take it but I’m hopeful it will help with pain and itching around the wounds. I was told to take it in the morning because it can interfere with sleep and make you kind of twitchy?

I have Adrenal insufficiency I have to take low dose prednisone for life and there is not enough information about what you can or cannot take with steroids. What's my biggest problem? Well since I don't produce cortisol and you can't control it like diabetes which has a meter to check ur blood I have to guess like when I get very stressed out or if I have infection. Double up on them if I'm sick or throwing up. I have lots of side effects too long to mention but I just would like to have a better quality of life. Every dr I have if I have side effect they blame steroid. I don't think there is option to come off these.

My late husband caught during a business trip Gilliam Barre Syndrome. Because of that he became paralyzed. Doctors prescribed Prednisone. My husband suffered from 90+ of the side effects you mentioned in your video, plus Kidney, Liver, Lung damage, bled from his anus. In the end, he's heart fail. He lost lots of hair, and he aged a lot. He looked like a 75+ man, when he died, he was 42.

I've been off and on, on Prednisone since 2098, when I was diagnosed. I started on 60 mg and tapered. I got so much relief, I cried. Since then I've been in a cocktail of meds and tapering Prednisone to help. I'm a severe case. I went through so many biological, to no avail, until I was on Xeljanz, and that's been a blessing since 2/15! Once in a great while I'd get a tapering again because of the Xeljanz not working fully or fading away. You would know that sometimes it needs to be stopped and then started again down the road, and having Prednisone to cover. If I'm doing ok, the 5 mg. of Prednisone takes a little more pain away. I gained so much weight and I keep trying to lose. A Dietician is helping me and she sympathizes with me because of this RA and Hypothyroidism. I have proved to her and myself, that I can lose. I'm paying attention to my calories and the carbs. I eat more protein, so I don't fill up on carbs. When I was on higher doses of Prednisone, I have more skin issues, like Shingles!! My last case was so horrible and I couldn't stop screaming. Calamine helped. I got a Shingles vaccine and nothing since! Thank goodness!! I'm thankful to be alive and better quality of life! Thank you, Dr. 😊😊

Hi Dr Micah! I'm due for an MRI next month (June) , i am given Prednisolone 5mg (8 tablets) 12hrs before the procedure and another (8 tablets) 2 hrs before the procedure. Knowing that Prednisolone is a type of steroid, I am worried about my personal side effects to Dexamethasone, it will give endless hiccups that is eventually became painful and it will only stop when i am given Diazepam. I asked the doctor, and he can't really say, and if i have complications, they will treat me and cancel the MRI. Is there by any chance that I could have the same effects with Prednisolone? p/s: my contrast MRI is for prostate. I think this dose is 40mg twice within 12hrs right? sounds scary just for an MRI. How long will Predisolone wear off rightt after that last dose till i can go off with my normal diet and activities.

I look at what the prednisone is taking the nutrients from that is the most worse and what I can afford. Then buy the nutrients as I slowly taper. I holding it at 20 but the severe horrid pain, weakness and breathing are extremely difficult for me. I do what I can and pray for strength to get thru and heal. I know I can never go fully off. I must control it at a lower dose and add back the nutrients it robs my body of.
