Playing one character on a pad and the other on a stick sounds like a really smart way to avoid mentally mixing the two characters up together. Can't accidentally autopilot one character as the other if you're using a completely different input method

I only recently bought a stick, after using pad since I was 7 years old. I am a totally blind gamer, with fighting games being all I can still play, and I wanted to have something that reminded me of the arcade cabinets that my local pizza place had when I was a kid. So I sprung for a stick, and I couldn't be happier. I love being able to enjoy fighting games in this way, and my very sensitive ears actually love all the fight stick sounds. :D

jarkokoo Thanks, buddy! I have a ton of fun gaming and lock picking; my two main hobbies. :) I also love love love the sound of mechanical keyboards, they're great. At first, I bought the Razer Raiju because of its mechanical buttons-not a keyboard, but still had that sound. But it was awful to use on fighting games, so I swapped it out for the Razer Panthera.

I was actually thinking of saying that myself. I know you guys have had videos with millions of views, but no matter what niche audience you think you may capture with any video you throw out, know there's a community that is either invested in it and wants to know more about it, or might consider interesting and pick up someday, helping out the community in general as well. If KZfaq throws some bull at your channel for some reason and you lose views, voice out if you need to. We all appreciate what you throw out, my dood(s) :D

One of the things I love most about the FGC is the sheer variety of controllers you can use. For example, I use a traditional arcade stick when playing fighters with 4 or more attack buttons, but in more simplified games, such as BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle or Pokken Tournament DX, I love to use the Pokken Pro Pad because of how natural it feels in my hands. But at the same time, if someone want to use a guitar hero guitar, they totally can!
@smol_hornet613
@smol_hornet613 7 ай бұрын
Strumbar for left/right, two fret keys for up/down, remaining 4 frets (if it's a 6-fret controller) for attacks. Whammy bar for meter stuff or smth. You might not have access to all moves depending on the game, but sure enough, you really could rock a guitar hero controller without even needing to reach over to the D-pad. Well, that's one more thing for me to try.

I switched from Pad to stick when BB CP came out. It was hard at first, but by learning new characters rather than relearning characters I used in previous games, made it still a fun and worthwhile experience. In Essence I fell for the Myth the stick is a more precise Input method for directions and found out that wasn't the case for me. I found some motions easier on pad (like dp motions 623) and others easier on stick (half circles like 41236). What really is selling the stick to me, is that I can rest my fingers on 5 Buttons, meaning I save time each button press when playing a game with 5 Buttons or less. In that sense I could really see me playing a hitbox, but was not able to buy one yet. (Mostly because they are not as easy to get as sticks) On another note: banning the smash box for melee makes sense, because it is objectivley better than a GCN Controller in doing the task. Though I think it should be allowed due to all the health issues that came forward by playing melee with a GCN Controller. In Smash Ultimate there is already so much weird stuff you can only do by using the c-stick (for instance charging terrys rising tackle while running or stopping the momentum of your jump after running), that the smash box has its fair share of weaknesses too (unless altered). So I don't really see the reason for banning it in that game.

I thought he wrote side note because he covered controllers used to win evo. I never knew of a mix box but it makes sense. For certain titles like MK the keyboard directionals work better for me. For the most part if my memory serves me right they are clean commands like FBF punch DFBF K fatality whatever lol. The keys would mess me up though especially the more complicated the game. Having the familiar 6 button layout with arrow keys sounds interesting. Thanks for the info you talk about a lot of things that I’ve thought about and think about some things I never knew or knew I wanted to know lol. As a former pad player, I can safely say that jumping to stick was the best decision ever. Even though it feels extremely weird at first, you really start to pick up on it and it starts feeling natural. I've also definitely gotten much better at fighting games as a result. This could be due to how all of the buttons are laid out and inputs via stick could be more deliberate and accurate. I seriously can't go back to pad now, just too cramped and awkward. So if anyone out there is hesitant to take the plunge, I'd say do it!

I played on arcades my whole entire life until I started gaming on PC and due to not having money for a stick I learned how to play on keyboard. Surprisingly, it went pretty well, comands are pretty accurate for the most part(unless you play games with complicated motions) and its pretty comfortable because you don't have to hold it or move your hand a lot. So now I finally got a stick but keyboard occasionally works better depeding on the character or game that I'm playing. Pads are still alien to me tho lol.

One of the best channels on YT, hands down. I played a lot in the arcades when i was younger, but after 13 years away from arcade sticks, it feels really difficult to go back, especially because we used circle gate, bat top sticks around here. I don't feel any difference with ball tops, but the different shape of the gate is kinda strange at first. I tried the Hori MINI 4 and it felt reaaaaaally strange, because the stick is too close to the buttons, and the buttons themselves are smaller than what i was used to. Thing is, arcade sticks are really expensive around here (the RAP4 is the same price as a PS4 Slim), so it's really prohbitive, especially not knowing if i'll ever be able to adapt to it.

Stick is hard to apply to smash because smash uses analog inputs, whereas almost all other fighters use digital inputs. Meaning slightly tilting the main stick on the gamecube controller makes you walk, but quickly flicking it all the way one way makes you dash. Controllers like the HitBox without levers do work, but there needs to be a separate button which, when pressed, tells the controller that the next directional input will be "suppressed", or half strength. In melee, the shoulder buttons are also analog: light shield and normal shield. You also lose the incremental angles between the regular eight directions, which matters for things like Fox's and Falco's up-b. Not to mention the gate on the gamecube controller sticks are not square or circular. They're hexagonal.

I think it's also worth mentioning how the games themselves have changed. Newer games being designed with gamepads in mind, for example. It's been quite revelatory to see all these people struggle with the controls of older SF titles now that the 30th Anniversary Collection is out because they are far less forgiving when it comes to inputs. (Disregarding SF1 of course, that one is just a mess.)

I've always thought that the full mechanical control of the arcade stick offered the most precise motor function due to the nature of the lever being in control at all times. For instance, the trombone can theoretically play faster than other brass instruments that utilize spring action valves, despite the distance it has to travel.

That was fast! Where did you get the other parts? Ordering online? Friends sticks from old systems or that have broken? What was the overall cost of the parts please?

I bought a kit online with 10 generic 30mm sanwa buttons, 1 original sanwa stick, all the wiring and a zero delay usb encoder for like 50 usd. I already had the drill but the 30mm forstner bit was like, 8 usd. Apart from the nuts and bolts to fixate the stick itself, that was all.

I ordered the parts from Focus Attack during their memorial sale, including a Brook board, Sanwa stick, 8 Seimitsu 30mm, 3 Seimitsu 22mm, and restrictor gate. The total came to exactly $100.50. I decided to put my dad's tools to good use, and picked up some Peruvian walnut my local hardware store got for a good price and was selling for dirt cheap (I got 4 board feet for $20), as well as some MDF. With the walnut, MDF, and parts, the total was about $125 dollars. Of course I also bought a router in a momentary lapse of reason, now I'm going to have to make a bunch of cases for people online and give them away/sell them for dirt cheap to justify the cost :P

Personally, I've found that since I grew up playing Tekken and Soul Calibur on PS1/PS2, I find it more comfortable to play those and generally any 3D fighter on pad. But for everything else that's 2D, I prefer using my stick.

I used to only play fighting games with a pad until last year when I went to an arcade in Florida and realized how nice a stick feels. With SC6 coming out, a game I was massively hyped for, I went ahead and got the SC6 arcade stick and haven't gone back to pad since. Even got an adapter that allows me to use it on my Switch in handheld mode since that's my preferred way to play my Switch and my friends got Central Fiction on Switch.

I'm not gonna lie, I played SF4 with a pad and then went to stick, and I liked it a lot, but as soon as I got SFV and picked up that PS4 controller...Man was it nice. I think it is a perfect pad for fighting games, though you are welcome to disagree.

Sweater Gawd played pad my hole life, strugled a bit with ps4 pad, the directionals are bigger than ps3's, so your finger needs to cover more space to do the same things, it makes more dificult and slow, but im already adapted to it.

A lot of the current games had pads in mind especially fighting games after 2010 but if you go few years older like let's say 2005 2003 they were still designed around the idea that they were going to be in an arcade and when you're playing in a competition they're going to play and set up the arcade edition game so if you go to a Street Fighter 3 third strike or Capcom versus Marvel 2 or Kof 98 know that you'll probably be handed a Beatdown by people that's been playing that game for god-knows-how-long on Arcade sticks

@Krystalmyth
@Krystalmyth 6 жыл бұрын
Philip Hunt-Bull Some people never started using arrow keys and used WASD as they had in shooters and the whole movement being on the left hand thing we've done on every controller ever. I also learned using right hand on keyboards and I regret it because it isn't uniform across all formats. My right hand is used to doing combos on buttons, but on keys I have to use my left. This isn't optimum, but I screwed myself over. Mixbox is trying to ensure people don't do that to themselves but I'm sure you can find a way to customize this layout.

I'm surprised that I never hear it explained in these kind of videos that one of the simple and most logical advantages of a stick is that *all* of your energy and action is devoted to control and not to managing an input device. That's why I switched. Stick players just seemed to have more precision and control. Yes, a pad was easier to use, but you gave up that precision.

Arcade sticks are way better than regular controllers because arcade sticks can be modified. Regular controllers are horrible for fighting games because you will get a LOT of missed inputs.

Overhaul I can give you the tl;dr. Digital buttons replacing an analog stick makes controllers initially less intuitive, but it has massive advantages once you're used to it because you can hit precise coordinates immediately and consistently.

I find some controllers better for different games/characters. USF4 I played some Claw and Hakan and liked the square gate stick for claw (he's a charge charge AND some moves specifically required a downback charge) but an oct gate for Hakan (grappler with quarter, half and full circle moves). Guilty gear I liked the oct gate as I didn't play any charge characters. Tekken I prefered square. Some games like MKX or DBFZ I find odd to play on stick because the buttons feel like they were primarily designed for a pad (neither of these games exist in the arcade so this makes sense). But now I play on a hitbox I built myself and love it. It plays fine for guilty gear and is AMAZING for tekken. I use my own layout for buttons so my hands are further apart and buttons are larger as its just more comfortable for me.

I agree that Dragon Ball Fighterz was designed for a pad, not sure about mkx
@NecromancyBlack
@NecromancyBlack 6 жыл бұрын
It's the way MKX has a separate button for stage interaction and blocking and EX moves. On a controller they are all really nicely laid out but on a stick it can take some time to find a layout that works. The inputs for special moves are also primarily made to be very easy for a pad user to pull off, with an option to change them around to be more like a how most fighting games are if you're on stick or something (eg a lot of moves would be down, forward+punch rather then down, downforward, forward+punch)
