CLIP DESCRIPTION:
After receiving bad news on his book, Miles (Paul Giamatti) releases his anger at the winery.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Directed by Alexander Payne, Sideways follows Miles (Paul Giamatti), who is distressed about his lack of success as a novelist, and Jack (Thomas Haden Church), an equally unsuccessful actor with a rapidly approaching wedding. In a last-ditch effort to sow their wild oats, Jack and Miles take off on a final road trip to California's wine country the week prior to Jack's wedding. Both men have goals for the vacation -- Miles wants to turn Jack on to the art of wine tasting, while Jack is concerned with exploiting his last days as a bachelor -- but when the two men come across two fascinating women (Virginia Madsen and Sandra Oh), the duo is forced to examine their morality, and if maturity isn't such a depressing prospect -- at least, for one of them.

One of my all-time favourite scenes. Perfectly captures how absurd your behaviour can get when depression meets anger

Miles said early on that this publisher was a small "specialty" press, which means they most likely publish quirky, offbeat, unusual novels that may not appeal to a mass audience. So for a specialty press to say "Sorry, we don't know how to market your offbeat book", sounds like pure laziness and incompetence to me. I would have angrily told the agent all this if I were Miles. What would I have to lose? They already rejected it.

@@izdotcarter So you're basically saying that all books that publishers are either too lazy, incompetent or unable to mass market to the public are garbage books? That seems incorrect, lad. Publishing is a bottom-line money-driven business.

Wow. Literally came here to say the same. We’re basically the same age and I revisited it a few days ago just after coming upon it on Showtime’s app. I liked the movie when I first saw it in theaters as an undergrad but now I get why people call it a masterpiece. My life has changed so much and a lot of the scenes I thought were funny still are but they are also sad and even a little disturbing in ways I never could’ve understood back then. Miles also really reminds of a lot of the people I knew in my doctorate program who had stuck around for years and never finished-all of the were brilliant but they were just kind of “stuck” or sideways I suppose :)

This is Why 'Self-Service' Wine Bars became a thing and will grow in the future for sure, so frustrating to have your intake dictated by the producers. They say "Buy a bottle and take it away this isn't a bar sir" but it's also not a restaurant and not everyone wants to buy a bottle at time, the whole point is trying lots of different wines so it is a good and happy medium to suit both parties to allow the customer choice and different measures to suit their needs at the time. Respect the fact your customers have comes from miles and miles around to visit your winery and leave them feeling like they had a great experience and want to return. (They are more likely to buy a case rather than a single bottle that way also)

If i were ever going to send a manuscript of a pulp novel to a publisher, I would start with Conundrum (it's real). Great movie, one of the best, and the book is not bad either. But NOT published by Conundrum :(

Because he wants to write, but, instead, he listens to junior high students read what others have written,Because he's 50 years old and doesn't think he has accomplished anything.Because he can justify stealing from his own mother.

I've seen lots of movies where he's hilarious. Pretty pathetic things to say for a so called "therapist" with a last name as Haak.

He states in the movie, “My life is half over and I have nothing to show for it.” A lot of people feel this way and it’s very saddening indeed.

One of my fav movies! But always bugs me when Maya is yelling at Miles in the car “you know what he has been telling her, loves her and gonna move up here……”. Miles responded with “I’m sure he believes every word of it”. But he should have said. “He told me the exact same thing”. Sure still mad at Miles but at least could have told her he’s telling me the same thing. Help him a lil. Lol.

I tried becoming an American Christian fantasy author and I totally resonate with this scene. I thought it was a wonderful piece of work from start to finish, but people don't like to be scared by the truth. They like to be entertained with falsehoods. Like the Left Behind series or that one movie about some guy's daughter who died and now God is a black lady.
