CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Maya (Virginia Madsen) turns on Miles (Paul Giamatti) with her wine talk, but he blows the mood.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Directed by Alexander Payne, Sideways follows Miles (Paul Giamatti), who is distressed about his lack of success as a novelist, and Jack (Thomas Haden Church), an equally unsuccessful actor with a rapidly approaching wedding. In a last-ditch effort to sow their wild oats, Jack and Miles take off on a final road trip to California's wine country the week prior to Jack's wedding. Both men have goals for the vacation -- Miles wants to turn Jack on to the art of wine tasting, while Jack is concerned with exploiting his last days as a bachelor -- but when the two men come across two fascinating women (Virginia Madsen and Sandra Oh), the duo is forced to examine their morality, and if maturity isn't such a depressing prospect -- at least, for one of them.

As beautiful as the dialog is in this scene and Virginia Madsen's delivery, as well as Paul Giamatti's reaction, it's the piano in the scene that does it for me. It just hits the right chord and makes you fall in love with her and what she is saying. Gets me every time.

@@johnhechtlinger9465 There are still gems.. But like gems they're rare. You just have to open your eyes to see their sparkle. Do you dislike super hero films? Try Winter Soldier at least. It has some good merit, I think... But you'd need to have some idea of the background, like watching the first film that isn't as good in my opinion. Most the super hero films aren't very good at all, though.

miles talking metaphorically about himself when he speaks of pinot noir, Virginia Madsen leveling it up with her own passionate monologue about the life of grapes. but something happens. one minute you're there - in the moment - emotionally, intellectually, almost spiritually... the next minute you're suddenly somewhere else. you're lost and you just can't find the way back. the life of a neurotic. this is a brilliant scene
@johnhechtlinger9465

well put...the neurotic is never fully in the moment, he (or she) is often on the outside looking in, filtering everything through past experiences, failures, conflicts, only occasionally connecting honestly to the Other person...as Fitzgerald put: "and so we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past"

This scene transports me right into their world in the Santa Ynez Valley. I can feel how strongly these people feel about wine, how there lives have taken a few turns they never expected they would, and how in its own naive way, here is a start of something special. Despite of Miles being such a nihilistic character, I have always found Sideways to be an incredibly hopeful movie, about how it's never too late in life for a new beautiful chapter to begin.

Virginia Madden is luminous in this scene (thanks art director). Her lines are perfection (thanks screenwriter). And she delivers them with such authenticity (I read she took acting classes to get to this level). My take away from this is pinot for Miles is a reflection of the state of his ego. For Maya Pinot is an expression about life and death contained in a bottle. Maya also suggests that opening a bottle is a kin to seizing the moment, a clever sexual reference. Just came back from San Ynez and Los Olivos so guess I'm still haunted by those damn vines.
