One thing I found is my wife actually really enjoys building models, I hate it. I love painting models and she hates it. So we actually work as a good team to get an army ready for the table top.

As someone with ADHD I relate hard to Liam's attitude to painting vs building sessions. I'm the same where if I'm painting I really need several hours free where I can really focus on it, but with building I take a little hobby toolkit to work with me with a couple of build projects in there and even if there's like half an hour of my lunch break free I'll get at least something done in that time. Also as someone who loves kitbashing, building models is a big part of my hobby.

Yeah my model building kit is very few items. It is easy to transport in a small box to go build the latest hype at the LGS. After damn near a decade of the hobby I've developed a concise list of tools I need to build and kitbash a typical kit. My painting kit on the other hand, woof, both the types of paint and my methods to maintain time efficiency are harder to be mobile with. I have to plan ahead what step in the process I can do mobile, at the LGS to hang out there. Usually its fine detail work, or final touch ups and whatnot. So the peeps there also get to see a mostly finished model.

Ah yes, that feel when you understand that glazing is really quite easy and just time consuming, you feel like you can achieve anything... by spending a week per 1 marine. My hardest lesson was to set my own standard for squad units and saving the power for heroes and centerpieces.

I've recently come to the realization that what I REALLY get joy out of is the kitbashing: painting is only a distant second to that for me. With that in mind, anything LESS detailed that a space Marine (open area, flat surfaces, etc) is going to be difficult to get a pleasing result with contrast/speed paints. Anything MORE detailed that a space marine - such as the striking scorpions - are PERFECT models for speed paint, for the majority of the body. Recognizing how not to go out of your mind is the best key to be able to pick something up again.

You can just have that feeling - where you can devour the tutorials and guides all day, but your fingers are itching to slap some paint on minis. This is your sign to ditch the theory for a bit and just dive in. Maybe even consider hitting up some local paint competitions. Those are often all about that single mini, just to paint it, so it's the perfect excuse to channel your energy into a masterpiece. Let's see those brushes fly! Here's to putting paint to plastic!

I hadn't thought about using a lighter for the metal glue tube! I had mine get clogged recently and ended up taking an old pill bottle I hadn't thrown out yet, poured in 99% isopropyl and let it sit for like 5 - 10 minutes and then let it air dry for a few minutes. I did keep the cap over the glue while it was in this process. Regardless, I do try to remember more frequently to put the cap on after applying the glue I need and then combining the pieces I am working with.

(P.M.P) Same as George was talking about regarding putting your best into everything doesn't work, especially as its now the job, you paint stuff to complete it and relax a bit. My whole thing was always painting, I enjoyed the game but I always wanted to paint it like the box, and at GD etc you'd see some people who were clearly born with god given talent, but there few and far between, the rest of us just have to graft at it, and you cant be good at every aspect of it (NMM, Stippling, Cloth, a particular colour etc, pick stuff you like to perfect then be good at the rest). The problem with wanting everything to be to boxart level, you never painted anything as you never will complete it, aim to finish to the standard you are at, then on the next project try to improve for that one to a next level if that makes sense. There's also this weird thin on social media, WIP images get likes, completed stuff gets like 1 like??! I say all this, but I'm doing a Votann army to Eavy metal sort of standard in my spare time...because i'm an idiot. Maybe i should play Death Stranding instead, its the same amount of time!!

I think it’s a pity that we see “hobby shaming” when people tell someone their choices/skill level/opinions are wrong it just pushes people out of the hobby. To mirror Liams point bikers can be naughty too: sports bike riders and Harley riders looking down on each other. It’s lovely to see wholesome chaps like you guys bringing people into the hobby (as long as they are in a nose piercing cult of course)

Its already been created a worms bordgame, was a kickstarter last year, dont know if it has had a general release yet, if not it should come sometimes this year. And those metal tubes on the glue is clogged up, Just take it out and turn it the other way around and the plastic sement will dissolve it and open it up. Old scalemodel trick

On a previous episode I remember a hobby hack was mentioned that glazing mediums were used to speed up glazing and I was wondering if that could be expanded on, how exactly are glazing mediums speeding up the process? I was under the impression they are paint retardants and will increase the working time.
@PartisanGamerDE
@PartisanGamerDE 5 ай бұрын
They offer you more control over the pigment. Therefore cutting down time on fixing you paintjob. Their main advantage is the consistency and feel of your glaze and how thin you can make the mixture without changing the properties of how the color behaves. If you mix in water for example you drastically change the surface tension and flow behaviour of your color. Proper medium keeps these parameters very close to the original color whilst allowing you to have minimal amounts of pigment applied, therefore giving you maximum control of how much pigment is applied and where.

Love the content guys good banter and a great vibe all round love listening to it at work (butcher to add to list of jobs that listen to the podcast), I gotta say it surprises me that most people don't like building models, I love it, i love kit bashing just making something unique I've just finished making my vet guard kill team into a danish frogmen and it was genuinely just going back and listening to the podcast eps and especially this one, realizing yeah all the models you see online are just people's best works in most cases you'll never see their worst so it's been great to just hear how even the greats like yourselves are even capable of mistakes like 'Yes the gods bleed' great work gentlemen keep up the great work Now question either lose all edge higlighting skills or all glazing skills?

I would argue that painting is probably like guitare if it's all about showing of. But for me it's obviously like basse ;) I hope you are all now even more confused by this comparaison ! I guess first we have to agree if we are talking about the rehearsal and progress process or just the performance ? Like painting isn't the same as having a painted model. The process is forgiving, you can blend, add layers... But once it's on the shelf.... YOU AR DOOMED ! XD

Many people who post on social media are miniature painters, when most people are army painters, you cant compare your army painted figures to the people who paint one off miniatures for 10-100 hours per mini, if you did, you'ld never get your army completed.

You all agree that if you don't like painting, it is fine to game using an unpainted army. I agree with this because both my armies are not even half way to be fully painted. My question is, if someone doesn't like building. Would you be ok with them just using the bases? 🤣🤣🤣 Great show as always guys.

I can already get some kits in 2 days from Amazon. That or ebay (which often have stores on both sites). Though I live 2 minutes from a GW store too. Neither of these are good for me let's be real.😅 The thing about making a mistake on guitar or bass at a gig is there's literally nothing you can do about it in the moment. So you just keep playing the song. That mistake might register for 5 whole people in the room for half of a split second, and then everybody forgets it because you all got a job to do. Then in the back room nobody is going to even remember it unless it was the bass player and the drummer is side-eyeing you for it. A goof with a model can be near insurmountable for a new painter. Especially if they don't know how to quickly correct a wayward paint splotch, or realize they can just...paint over it later.

I can tell you right now why the "old guard" don't necessarily like all the new attention and people coming into the hobby. And it never used to be like this at all, everyone used to be very welcoming into the hobby. And even now some some of the "old guard" are still very welcoming. And with those individuals you will usually find that they don't have a big social media presence. But the "old guard" that do can see what is happening, you get a bunch of new people coming in that want to change things about the hobby that they love. It's as simple as that. For instance just look what happened with the female Custodes, and its not just in this hobby/fandom that it's happening. There's massive changes sweeping across all IPs and has been since like 2016. And people are just sick of it. They don't want their escapism diluted and changed to meet some mass new audience. And most of this new audience doesn't even do anything in the hobby except watch youtube videos and then comment on socials about it. They're not the customer. Anyway, that's the answer.
