Rolling Stone has called 35-year-old singer-songwriter Sierra Ferrell one of "country and roots music's most fascinating and fastest-rising artists." She's touring alongside the Avett Brothers and Zach Bryan this summer. But Ferrell's road to this moment was unconventional. As Anthony Mason shows, the only thing more amazing than her voice is her story.
Each weekday morning, "CBS Mornings" co-hosts Gayle King, Tony Dokoupil and Nate Burleson bring you the latest breaking news, smart conversation and in-depth feature reporting. "CBS Mornings" airs weekdays at 7 a.m. on CBS and stream it at 8 a.m. ET on the CBS News app.

CBS has been showcasing some really incredible non-mainstream talent lately - especially Country/Blues/Americana/Blue Grass. Billy Strings, Charlie Crockett, Gary Clark Jr., to name a few. Much respect to a big network using their power and reach to give these artists the spotlight.

I was friends with friends of hers. I remember her playing music on my sister’s front porch in Arkansas with some of my cousins. She had a beer in her hand, a guitar in her lap, wearing a baggy T shirt, cut off jeans & she was barefooted. They’d pass around a joint, take a swig of beer & play the best front porch down home music I ever heard. She has come so far from the girl on my sister’s porch. I am so proud to know her back when it started. You go gal.

The front porch thing wasn’t a jam with strangers, we played most every night after dinner; no she didn’t stay long, only 4 1/2 months. She doesn’t grow roots?? Todd told a story about meeting a group of kids outside an earlier venue he was about to do a show at...in either Virginia or West Virginia, I think. One of the kids was a girl carrying a guitar. He asked her if she could sing - and she played him one of her songs. Todd Snider liked it so much he asked her if she'd like to join him down in Asheville. If so, he'd let her sing that song in the middle of his set at the Orange Peel. And she did. She was great. The crowd loved her. Her voice is great but it’s not her voice. She has that ‘panache’ that can’t be taught- she’s a communicator. Like the others- surprisingly few- where they are even more powerful in person than on a record or the radio: Nanci Griffith, Billy Joel, Allison Krause, Evanescence, Merle Haggard, David Draiman, Arthur Fiedler, Suzy Bogus, others; fabulous listening to their recorded works. In person and live, however, they have a presence that communicates- even if they weren’t great singers or not accomplished musicians they’d have that presence. Combine the two and you get Sierra Ferrel joining the ranks of those noted above, and a few others. She’s ‘believable’ no matter what she sings, and has great pitch. The voice is just one more good thing.

Occasionally, God puts special artists on this plane to help us try to find our way or laugh at this veil of tears. Townes VanZant, Dylan, Guy Clark, Hank, Dolly, Willie, Loretta, Steve and Justin Earle-these are just some of the lights in our sometimes very dark universe-Sierra is one of the brightest

She is for sure, but it would be remiss to not mention that songwriter and performer Melody Walker co-wrote several songs on her new album!

@@IvaMacheteseveral is a bit of a stretch. Melody Walker co-wrote 2 songs on the album "Dollar Bill Bar" and "American Dreaming". The only other song on the album that is a co-write is "Lighthouse" with Lindsay Lou.

Don't forget guitar player, too. She can pick and her rhythm strumming is a unique hybrid of bluegrass and olde time. I think we can add mandolin and the ole washtub bass to the list, too. AND she's getting to know her way around a fiddle pretty well.
