Fluted chamber might the culprit why the mp5 is a little bit louder. Both are excellent guns, own both if you can.

Great thought there! The easier release from the fluted chamber could allow for a bit more port noice. Might have to flute an MPXSD barrel and check that theory.

MP5 and MPXs are both amazing. I love them both. I have an MPXSD and the one thing that everyone forgets to give MPXs props for is it's modularity. The MPX can go back to a conventional set up when you need it to by just switching the barrel out. you cannot do that with MP5s. MPXs also can handle AR style PCC triggers. The cost is also a factor as well.

they are so close on the sound this is wild. I think the mpx has the aspect of last round bolt hold open and the familiar controls. The mp5 however has better charging handle placement, and I think the roller delay beats the piston.

Just decided to convert my MPX to SD. Bought an ILWT SD barrel for the MPX and now waiting on a B&T MP5 SD RBS-M suppressor. I’m looking forward to having a modular length SD suppressor on my MPX

Growing up, I always thought that the MP5SD was my dream gun. Now that I own an MPX with a Rad9, I enjoy the flexibility of running 147gr for subsonic and lighter weights for more energy.

As a reloader, I do know there are 7000 grains to 1lb. I would choose the MPX, I own the MPX-K FDE and that I want an 8" barrel/handguard for more hand space on the rail. I also own many 1911s. The MP5 is still a classic and sexy gun.

Had an MP5 (PTR) it was really cool. Bucket list type gun because of the pop culture around it. It was quite surprised, it was very comfortable to shoot with the RDB system. After owning it and shooting it suppressed for years, I sold it and bought an MPX. I originally thought the MP5 would be quieter, but having a home with a wife and kids that practice with ARs the MPX was easy to cross over for them. I can say without a doubt I prefer the MPX more than the MP5 or any of the other sub guns I’ve owned.

Very cool engineering, especially considering the MPX is gas operated vs delayed blow back, requiring the gas system to be reworked in addition to the recoil system. I think PCCs are generally kinda lame, but running cheep 9mm subsonically suppressed is super valuable

Great review and they're both great setups! I'd prefer the MPX just due to the manual of arms familiarity. I'd love to see something done on the BT APC if that was possible as others here have mentioned. I'm also a Rolex wearing Steak eating guy... and I carry a Staccato C2 as my EDC. Different strokes as they say.

How do you assess this suppressor's performance vs. the ModX-9 which was literally designed for the MPX (and is probably way lighter)?

While I understand the point of the ported barrel is to drop the typically supersonic 115/124g rounds down to subsonic, I am curious if you ran 147g to see how much quieter they would be. How slow is a typical 147g coming out of an SD barrel? 700ish fps?

We need Charlie Sheen (Lt Hawkins) to ram the muzzles of each against ballistic gelatin blocks and fire singles and bursts to compare the up close and personal (ucap) sound levels. Does port noise increase or does the additional bio-baffle make it even more quiet? After that, we have to work on silent self loading actions. Perhaps requiring long travel so there are no sudden carrier stops. Carrier to receiver fit like a custom 1911 or CZ to eliminate any action rattle. Maybe even buffers for the chamber end of travel to eliminate the clang of metal on metal and bolt bounce. Finally silent springs to eliminate the "sproing" we will eventually hear once we eliminate all the other sounds.

Will these suppressors still work if Ronin doesn't drill ports in the barrel? Thereby maintaining the ability to run supers while still getting the compact over the barrel suppressor package?

You could. But it would defeat the purpose of the SD over the barrel design. Rounds would remain supersonic. No advantage that I can see for not porting the barrel in an over barrel 9mm SD. But good question

I wish we could have heard some 147’s, those must be super quiet. I also wanted to hear what the ballistics are on 9mm from the mpx, we know the mp5 is essentially a 380 after all the porting.

You should really check out Broad River Tactical Chris Allen is a Top Notch Stand Up Guy. I'm telling you that you can't beat his Quality and Prices Absolutely Outstanding. I just did an AR9 build using his direct blowback ported 9mm SD Barrel and his MP5SD handguard the total price for Barrel & Handguard under $500 he also does complete Upper Receiver builds for 9mm Radial Delay & Direct Blowback as well as a 300 Blackout Upper Receiver. He also has his complete Radial Delay Upper including a CMMG BCG & Charging Handle Build under $650 that includes Shipping Direct Blowback 9mm SD under $650 & 300 Blackout under $650 including Shipping. Paired with an HTA or B&T Can they are very Quiet. I am more than thrilled with everything I've got from Chris at Broad River Tactical Definitely Check him out if you're thinking of doing a SD 9mm Build.

I still prefer the recoil impulse of the mp5 and how it naturally handles gas. But the mpx does everything else better.

We’ve been working on a fix for the inherent accuracy issues in the MPX platform. And we’ve pretty much got it figured out. We make this modification and update to the MPX with every conversion that we do to try to make it as accurate as we can possibly make it.

Scotty has a pretty deep catalogue of content running the hell out of these guns on his instagram. Scotty travels the southwest and uses the same demo guns at each event he goes to. These guns have 10’s of thousands of rounds on them.

Accuracy we have been seeing with testing is 2” or under group at 25 yards with 115gn ammo. Pretty much standard for most sub guns on the market suppressed and not.

I’d have liked some velocity readings. Is it true you can’t run 147 in a SD? BTW, I’m a 1911 guy (and revolver and 2011) and though I went to HK Armorer and had an MP issued for several years, I prefer the AR ergos over the MP. And I’m a steak guy. And no way to an Apple Watch guy.

I run a 16" MPX in Competition. 147 gr runs about 1000-1100 fps. But was so soft shooting that it made my MPX short stroke/FFE. 124 gr averaged 1250 fps and ran great. But my choice for competition is 115 gr at about 1250-1300 fps. Due to minimal sight disturbance and absolute reliability. Now again my numbers are for a 16" barrel. Sorry I don't have an SD upper to test yet.

Why not just put a sound meter on it? That would take out the subjective nature of your test. Besides that, this is really a testimonial for the MP5 given the 60 year longevity of it. Truly a design well ahead of its time. I am really liking the Sig though too, although if I'm going modern, then I'm definitely going 300 BLK. So the answer is own the MP5 and the Rattler! :)
