I have this lens and it's incredible. Sharpness is absolutely perfect, it reveals so much fine details even with TC1401 attached on a D850. You can barely notice a drop in sharpness still with the TC2001, higher ISO affects the IQ more than the TC itself. But I've used it for moon shots with an astro cam at 1000mm F8 and it's amazing. I have used a 400mm F2.8 G VR before that, the Sigma is clearly sharper (than the 400 I had at least), and so much more practical to use. Nice work Dustin, I always like your reviews.

Enjoying the review so far, i own this lens myself and am a sports shooter (as well as some wildlife) I tested it against the Nikon version (thats double the price here in AU) and couldnt tell the difference. I've used it on crop and full frame bodies and found it has delivered some spectacular images and its my go to lens for football and motorsport. Some owners have mentioned an issue with the AF wavering in bursts on static subjects, but i haven't come across that myself. Looking forward to the final installment

The two skill sets don't necessarily go together. Some photographers are quite shy or have a hard time being in front of the camera.

Saw this lens at the ProFusion Camera Show in Toronto when it first came out and I was surprised at how light it is. Definitely on the wish list!

@@DustinAbbottTWI I have the Sigma 120-300mm 2.8 which is actually a little heavier than the 500mm, which surprised me, but then again it's a prime vs a zoom.

This is the kind of lens I lust after but could never justify getting for myself. Costs about twice as much as my entire kit does right now, and I just don't do wildlife or sports. I'd _like_ to, but I don't.

That's the way a lot of people feel. I would personally only be tempted by a lens like this if I had somewhat regular opportunity to use it. If I had big money invested in a lens like this and it sat for months in between shoots, that would drive me crazy!

I don't know if someone has done that comparison. I'm not in a particularly good birding area, so that's always a challenge for me.

@@DustinAbbottTWI I have this lens and shots birds 95% of the time... the AF speed is really fast "stock" but when you use the USB-dock and put it to speed priority the AF speed is more or less doubled...

I use this lens with my D500 and D850, the auto focus is lightning fast for BIF and it stays locked on to your subject like a magnet. I also own the Nikon 200-500mm f5.6 which is a great lens for the price point "easier to carry around on long hikes", but it does not compare to the Sigma 500mm f4 sport in image quality auto focus speed, subject acquisition and dissolving the background, is it $4.5 K better than the Nikon, of course not, no F4 lens is $4K + better than an equivalent zoom, what you are paying for is the extra material used, larger elements, larger body, top notch built and materials used, weather sealing, better warranty, R&D costs, and the things I mentioned above in regards to image quality, which can make or break from you getting and not getting the shot. did you ever notice focus issues on canon R5/R6 such as has been noticed with the 150-600 lenses ??? do you think this lens compares with the canon EF 500 II?

It is less likely to have focus issues on the R5 or R6 due to the nature of the focus system. I haven't compared the Sigma to the Canon EF lens.

Great review. Very well rounded. The relative performance of the 100-400 suggests to me that, spectacular as this lens is, the Canon version might be even better. Possibly a big enough difference to warrant the price increase. Not that I will be considering either. I look forward to your comparison of this lens with the more affordable superzooms.

Hallo Dustin, that is a fantastic review. However, I have a remark to your flare test at 13:58 where I wanted to note that it is important not to direct a telephoto lens, which is basically a telescope, directly to the sun. A telephoto lens with an opening the size of the sigma is able to direct in the order of 10 Watts (hundreds of standard laser pointers!) to one's eye and thus can cause irreversible eye damage in fractions of a second in the case of DSLRs, where the eye is a part of the optical system, or at least damage your sensor in the case of mirrorless systems. I know you have not done that, but I am not sure that is clear to all of the viewers.

Hi Dustin Really enjoy your reviews. Nice to see the sigma 500mm f4 sport. I've used the lens for almost 2 years...probably 40000 plus images on a nikon d500. I use for everything from portraits to macro to wildlife... Look forward to your final review... I know how good it is but great to see you giving it a try out.

Just a quick question could you imagine comparing this with the Sigma 500mm DG F4.5 HSM prime older lens ? I own this lens and even reviewed it, it has some short comings I did a video comparing it with the sigma 150-600 C. What are your thoughts ? I have made a few videos on this topic feel free to check them out. My take away was CA does not take extenders well and at F4.5 it seems some what soft. It also has no OS which is a bummer hand holding it.

Does any one have any thoughts on the sigma 500mm F4 prime lens I have herd its a great lens I have had the 500 older F4.5 lens which was ok but with no os. a bit soft at F4.5. The new lens is interesting but I have herd it has an issue as you can only calibrate it to 1 camera if so a bit of a bummer if you own more than one camera like I do. Any one out their got any experience using this lens .?

You can always buy a used version for around 3-4K. I bought mine off ebay for $1998 no joke. Hardly anyone was bidding on it.

Unfortunately no. I don't have a good source for getting Canon superteles without major expense...and the Sigma has gone back to Sigma as of today

Apart from the terrifying price tag ( vs actual use ) I cannot imagine why no-one dissects Landscape with a surgically precise weapon like this. Maybe it's just me but I often see things that need a scalpel like it? Digital zoom doesn't do it for me....'old fashioned Film boy you see.... 'don't like cheatin' ....😉.

There are landscape applications for this lens, but it won't really do anything in that environment that a much cheaper zoom lens wouldn't do.

If you are talking about the drifting smoke, it is from my outdoor fireplace. I often have a fire in the morning while I do my devotions and have a cup of tea.
