A few more points I forgot to mention (will update this list if there's anything else I find): FRINGING: Some people have mentioned that fringing is an issue with the 60-600mm at 60mm. I did not see any fringing in most of my photos. I tried to recreate the type of photo where I might see this - and indeed, when photographing a tree in front of a white background, I noticed some slight fringing on the branches. It was, however, not an issue with most of my photos - just the photo with the branches/white background. DURABILITY: The 60-600 has better weather sealing and a better build, so if you will be photographing things in harsh weather conditions, that might be something to consider as well. AUTOFOCUS: It was fast for me, had no issues there. Again, this video focusing on the things I personally noticed, but if there's anything I missed or that you want to add, let me know!

I made my decision I'm going to get my lens for next year I'm excited Sigma 150 to 600 good enough for me 🙂 I have a Canon 80d I still use it it came with a kit lens and then I bought last year was my 70 300 mm lens the newer version so now next year I am ready to buy Sigma 150 600 mm lens and that's just going to be perfect and I'm thinking also maybe later on over the years I might swap out my Canon 80D for a 90d just a little faster

@@sheldonwhite4960 The 60-600mm is mechincally completely different with more lense groups. More important the 150-600mm is not a PARFOCAL lense as the 60-600mm is and if you spending that kind of money really if video matters there is no better choice and I talking Sony, Canon and Nikon gear too.

I love my 150-600mm C Lens. Sharp, fast, weighs less and cost less without sacrificing quality, not as weather sealed as the Sport, but I never expose my gear to those harsh conditions if I can help it. When I use this lens I know that the wildlife will be a distance so 60mm doesn't usually come into play for me. As mentioned at 60mm there is some slight purple fringing but nothing more than other high quality lenses so it really is not worth mentioning to much.

I have both of these lenses and as stated the 60-600 is significantly heavier than the 150-600 BUT the way the 60-600 is designed with the heavier materials nearest the lens mount makes the 60-600 much easier to hand hold despite the extra weight

Thanks Nicole! The build on the sports version is also much better I think and adds to the cost differential. I've been trying to decided between the two sports versions (150 or 60) and sharpness is my #1 criteria. Cost difference is negligible between the sports versions of both. I appreciate the 600mm comparison shots, they were helpful.

It was a debate I also had but ultimately decided to go with the 60-600mm. I would like to purchase the 150 to 600. I always use a monopod; if not a tripod. Handholding is limited and gets really shaky. You are correct about light. You need a lot of it.

Great job on your video...I have the 60-600 and haven't used it for a while, wanted reassurance again that it's good :-) I also have the Tamron 100-400, but the extra 40mm of width sure helps when I can't step away and the 600 end sure reaches farther easily. Plus my arms get a workout! Thanks again.

Very informative. I have had the 150-600 for a few years now for my major interest which is nature photography. I find the lens hood irritating when I have to take it on and off. The alternative arrangement of the 60-600 I would prefer. To get sufficient range of focal lengths I would carry a Nikon 18-70 lens and Nikon 70-300 in addition to the big one. To be able to dump the 70-300 would be a worthwhile weight saving partly offsetting the extra weight of the 60-600. The tripod mount is far better and I would greatly prefer the 60-600 arrangement. Because of the weight I am abandoning Nikon DSLRs (I just sold 5 of them, and 4 lenses, D500 and 150-600mm still to go). The 150-600/D500 combination I found excellent, I shall be sad to see it go but the weight is killing me and my enjoyment of my photography. One thing I loved about the 150-600 was the close focusing which allowed really good shots of larger insects, particularly dragonflies and butterflies, a bonus I had not thought of when I bought the lens.

Thanks for the videos! I have a question on autofocus. I have had the 150-600mm C in both Canon and Nikon mount since it has been released. I find it struggles with acquiring focus when zoomed out at 600 on a subject like Birds. I shoot mostly Raptors with this lens and I feel I miss a lot of shots because of the initial hunting. This has happened with all the cameras I have used and currently use the Nikon Z6II with the Sigma. I don’t recall you talking about the autofocus between the two lenses. Do you find the 60-600 better at acquiring initial focus? That is really my only complaint with the Sigma 150-600mm I have captured some beautiful shots with the lens. Thanks for your time and work. Dom.

Not regretting my purchase of 150-600 a few days ago.. Though I wish the auto focus was little faster at 600mm.. It hunts for focus while I lose my composition (like flying birds) quickly. 😔

Great comparison. I have been looking at these two lenses for a while. I have been wondering if the more 60-600 is worth the weight and expense vs the range. After watching your video I just thout about that for the prices of the 60-600 I could by another RP and the 150-600. It might even weigh less. And with my main RP and 24-105 f4, i would have a larger range without having to swap lenses in the field. Granted, two cameras and two lenses would weigh more overall, but interesting to think about as a possible option for a similar price.

I think that picture quality differences are not significant here between these two lenses, but AF accuracy & speed, OS quality etc are. Would love to hear more about those. The focal range 60-150 is not an issue for me, I'll be happy to have two bodies, one with 150-600 (preferably crop sensor) and other with e.g. 17-40 (full frame) rather than 60-600, if it does not bring any real advantage let say in OS.

Ms. Glass: Thanks so much for your thorough and practical review of both lenses. I love zoom lenses and have the Sony 70-350mm for my apsc Sony A6600 relatively small/lightweight camera. From the first moment I considered a camera for international travel (upgrading from the small compact ones) size and weight was my prime consideration. I was shocked at the difference between the smaller apsc cameras and full frame cameras, because it's not just the camera body, but the large lenses. The sony 70-350mm zoom lens cost me less than $800 on Amazon (warehouse) and allows me to get very decent wildlife and sports/candid action/dramatic profile shots. As well, the 350 mm lens is 1/2 the price; weighs maybe 30% of the sigma, and is less than 1/2 the length/size of the sigma. So, that's my concern with these enormous lenses: 1. their cost---at $1400-$2000 (including tax) are they worth the price compared to how much they are used? Imagine, for that price you could buy a very good brand new camera with at least one lens, etc. 2. their size and weight: people now are grabbing the smallest/lightest, most convenient camera--or just their cell phone. Try taking these monsters on an international trip, where you would be most likely to use them---baggage costs, lack of portability are enormous negative factors---for the very real hassle and extra cost to carry these with you, will you really be using them THAT MUCH? ! I don't want my equipment sitting at home because of size and weight or it's just a waste of my money. If I were a pro, still life photographer, no question I would be getting one of these lens, but...I'm not, and size and weight really do matter to me as a traveler. Thanks again for the great review.

One thing I’m curious to know is distortion. Super-zooms often suffer from barrel distortion at wider angles and pincushion distortion at the other end. So since the 60-600 has such a wide zoom range, I’d be a little nervous about that. I’m allergic to distortion, and I much prefer lenses with little or none of it.
@Dreyno
@Dreyno 3 жыл бұрын
The extra at the wide end isn’t really something you need on a 600mm lens. Being able to come back to 150mm is really wide enough. If you’re shooting at 60mm, you probably have a lighter, sharper lens that will come back to 24mm. It’s a bit like having a sidecar on a motorcycle when you have a car at home. Yeah, it’ll do the job. But the car would’ve been better.

That’s what I was thinking for my own use as well. The 60-600 is 40% heavier and over twice as expensive. I bought the 150-600 and am very glad I did. Whenever it’s on my camera I haven’t needed a shorter focal length yet.

Another huge factor for my choice of 60-600 was the weather sealing! The contemporary models are weather sealed as well.
@berkeleygang1834
@berkeleygang1834 3 жыл бұрын
Evidently, the 150-600 Contemporary is only weather and dust sealed at the mount. The 150-600 Sport (as opposed to Contemporary) version is weather sealed. Perhaps it's more of an apples to apples comparison to compare the Sport version of the 150-600, as the 60-600 is also in Sigma's Sport line. The difference in weight and price is much, much closer, and I wonder why someone would pick the 150-600 Sport over the 60-600 Sport. Since optical performance of all three lenses is very similar, it just points out how much of a bargain the 150-600 Contemporary is, at 1/2 the price and 2/3 the weight.
@trbeattie
@trbeattie 3 жыл бұрын

My contemporary is great for bird shoots. Shooting Snowy Owls by tossing out feeder mice and gerbils, the 150 to 600 mm works fantastic. Used on a tripod with a gimbal at medium tension for movement works great. To get smooth from the zoom, I attached a pipe clamp with a screw punch thro and a small steel bar as a lever to forgo the double zoom movement of my wrist.

Thanks for the review. Spot on. I have both lenses, plus an array of Canon Primes. I bought the 150-600 for a trip to Africa and was extremely happy with that choice. I used it with a Canon 80D at the time., and came back with wonderful shots. I have since upgraded to Canon 5Div and now R5. Why did I buy the 60-600? Its a dead perfect travel lens. Nothing compares for how I travel, which is mostly for nature and wildlife. I pack two bodies, the 60-600, 16-35 f2.8, and the 24-70 f2.8 and I'm done. I've been overjoyed with the performance of both lenses, but the increase in range is an advantage beyond description. Yes it's heavier, but otherwise, to get coverage I would need to carry yet another lens which would be very problematic. So. If you need a great lens for travel, and don't want to pack your Canon 600 f4 prime (speaking about weight)., along with 4 or 5 other lenses, then this is a very very good alternative.

@spidersj12
@spidersj12 3 жыл бұрын
I'm pondering these two lenses myself. One thing to consider is the cost and variety of 95mm and 105mm filter threads that are available for the 150-600m Contemporary vs. 60-600m Sport. If you want to use either lens for shooting the moon and want a light pollution filter your only only for a front threaded filter lens is the 150-600mm C. If you have a Canon RF mount body you can get the EOS EF to RF mount adapter with the drop in filter and drop in a light pollution filter, or Canon's variable ND filter or CP filter. Of course you can get the filters that mount in the body in front of the sensor as well, but that is a little more finickity. I do like the 60-600mm tripod foot, a far better foot that is arca swiss compatible, but supposedly you can buy that foot and put on the Sigma 150-600mm Sport version, which some reviewers have stated has a faster focus that the contemporary version. I think we're spoiled with options these days.

The weight difference is due to comparing the Contemporary 150-600 to the 60-600. The 150-600 Sport is heavier than the 60-600. Here in the UK the difference in price between the two Sport lenses is around £300, once again between both Sport lenses the differences are minimal.

60-600 comes w actual weather sealing, better stabilization, acc to independent tests up to 30% more resolution at the long end where it matters (copy variability may play a role), well built body, good weight balance and faster af. unless money or weight is a concern, 60-600 can be labeled the best zoom telephoto on the market from that era. nothing can match it. it gives you sharpest well stabilized 600mm at f 6.3 in a "pro" body.

I was using the Sigma C with my Nikon D5300 for 2-3 years and the sharpness is really good for such lens, and yeah the les light you get with an entry lvl camera the pics start to lose deatail, mostly i used it also mid days and in Zoos with better light. Now im using the Sigma with a D500 and the camera doesnt give a cra* about high iso, so im more often shooting in bad weater condition to get more interesting shots. The 60-600m would be awesome to have but the weight and the cost is a kill off for me, as the D500 and C are around 2,7kg and with time it becomes have. In the end it what you capture with your equipment doesnt matter if its entry lvl or high end gear.

Recently I have been hired on as part of a team of photographers for a Pro-Am soccer league. there are parallels between bird photography and sports. I have shot soccer before and usually rented a Canon 100-400 lens (II) to companion my own glass. I'm also a recent retiree, 58 years young, so there is not a bottomless pit for financing my camera gear ( I'm frugal with hobby monies). I'm looking for long glass so that I can capture expressions, emotional moments. This new league does play a good portion of their games during the day , although night games are also scheduled. I am fascinated with these third-party lenses - including the 100-400 Tamron, the 150-600 Sport and the Sigma 60-600 Sport. So, I'm calling out for honest opinions to complement Billie's videos. Thanks all. Paul

I've used the 150-600C for two years. I had a chance to look at the 60-600 S in a big city store and the salesman was taken aback when I immediately handed it back like a hot potato and said nope. I don't consider the 60-600 to really be a portable lense. The 105 filter seals it as well. Mostly happy with the C lens for field use.

Great video! I ended up going with the 150-600 primarily because of weight. I rented both lenses and since I hand hold all my shots the weight was the deciding factor. It didn't hurt that it was cheaper. I couldn't see a sharpness difference between the two. After a few weeks with the 150-600mm I am very happy with it. No regrets.

For the price, you're better with the 150-600 due to weight and portability. The money difference could buy something like a 24-105 to cover the other zoom range, although not completely (or a prime or two!).

Cool comparison - re. the lens creep / zoom movement under its own weight, I had a look at a 60-600mm at a trade show when it was super new, and the Sigma rep was explaining that it's desinged for you to be able to push and pull the barrel to zoom, as well as turning the ring, and that means that it moves much more easily than some other similar size lenses...

I have the 150-600, purely for birding and wildlife. But on the odd occasion, my subject does get close like quickly little Swifts where pulling back woildnuave given my R7 AF more time to lock on. Is it worth more than 2x the price and an additional almost 2lbs, no. Not for how often I find myself in this situation, at least. For the zoo, the 60-600 would be perfect. If I go to the airshow, definitely. But I too am happy with something that is lighter and cheaper.

Hello Everyone :) :) I would like to ask what camera to choose for wildlife and animal photos - mainly horses: Nikon D500 or Canon 1dX mark II?? I know it's FX and DX but I read different opinions and I don't really know which one is better. I read about the D500 that it has 153 AF points only in subject tracking mode, but only 55 points selectable ... and I don't know if it's just right for horses or not enough. Canon 1dX II have 61 AF points. I am not a professional photographer, but I would like to deepen my knowledge in this field and change my camera. I currently own a Nikon D5200.

Just bought the 150 - 600 for about 550$ new. Since I anyhow use it mostly at the long end, it is lighter and I have a 2nd body which I use for shorter lenses, there is no case for me to buy the 60 600.

Hi, Nicole, do you see the sharpness of the 600 mm end with f6.3 acceptable for the 60-600 mm lens? With the 150-600 C lens, I need to narrow down to F8 to get good sharpness.

I've just bought the Sigma 150-600 C, haven't had chance to give it much of a test yet but so far compared to my Canon L lenses I'm finding it slow to lock on to a subject and slow to focus. As you say it's a lens that will need plenty light to get the best out of it and it's not really fair to test it in the murky depth of Winter.

@@mickemmett6828 there are always limits 🤑on greed , i tested the nifty fifty and the 50 mm L version with comparison program from a friend ( who has a lot more money than me 😭) , and the L was 17,2 % better than the nifty with the test image for a mere 1000% more in price , a bit of a discrepancy , and the 50L is relatively cheap for an L. I would think 500 % would be good enough when compared to a non L version.😉

Great re view. I'm considering the 150-600s from Sigma, Tamron, and the 200-500 from Nikon (sorry to use the N word around a Canon shooter - I had an AE-1 but switched to Nikon in the early 80s after Canon changed lens mount). I'd like something with more "reach" than the 70-200, and these are logical choices. The versatility of the 60-600 is tempting, and to get this kind of zoom without a major hit on image quality (like many other 10x zooms) is phenomenal. Then again, Sigma had the legendary 50-500mm "Bigma," so they have quite a bit of experience, and success, with this range of focal lengths. See my other comment below about comparing the Sigma 150-600 Sport version. Great to have so many choices, if you can afford them. Thanks again for this very valuable comparison.

I believe Canon changed from FD to EF mount in 1987. (Is that “the early 80s”? Maybe). By the way: They changed the mount because they realised that autofocus wouldn’t work well enough with their existing mount: It was too small. Nikon actually had the same problem, but they decided to take on the struggle. The bonus was more happy users. The downside was that for many years Nikon’s AF was inferior to Canon’s, although I believe they caught up in the end.
