What I can tell you is this, the Sigma was so sharp when zoomed in 3:1 on our models eyes and the Sony was slightly not, that I thought I had a bad copy of the G Master. So, we called in another copy to verify our results....and the same results applied with the second lens. YES this SIGMA lens in my opinion is the better option.

@@creep4415 He gives us the raw files too, so we can make our own decisions. He also showed us the AF speed and accuracy comparison. So maybe he should have shown other tests so we can see how it handles chromatic aberration, flare, LOCA, etc., but I'm pretty happy with what I've seen that there's no way I'm paying 600 bucks more for the G Master.

Something definitely advanced in lens technology recently. Lenses coming out in the last 18 months are lighter and sharper than older optics. The recent Tamron 28-200, 70-180, and the Sony FE 20mm are all impressively sharp for their weight.

I own the 85mm f1.4 GM and love how it renders but its not razor sharp wide open. Sigma have essentially made the GM a non option for anyone in the market for an 85mm. It might even make some think twice about the f1.8 options too. Huge congrats to Sigma but I’m keeping my beloved GM :)

If I didn’t already own the GM I would by the Sigma definitely. Like when I bought their 24-70mm Art, there’s no way I was spending more on the GM for similar or in some aspects lower performance than the lens half the price. For Sony to make the GM buyable again they’ll need to lower the price of the GM (not going to happen) or remake it into an 85mm f1.2 GM that’s sharper but keeps or even improves the already beautiful rendering of the current lens.

My sigma just arrived. The pin cushion distortion is very noticeable. I know you fix it in post...but there goes the edge sharpness. Shooting anything with lines or cropping faces near the edge will be noticeable. I’m surprised you didn’t touch on this?

Could it be something to do with the IBIS being on? Maybe it interacts with the sony a bit differently than the sigma, and I've heard something about IBIS messing up tripod shot sharpness.

Thanks for sharing. Great comparison. Personally had similar experiences with the Sigma 85mm 1.4 and 35mm 1.4 for Canon. Those Sigma art lenses blow other lenses out of the water. They truly are top of the class when it comes to sharpness. Overall even prefer Sigma art over Sony or Canon lenses these days.

Just wondering if you tested the lens around f2-f4 ranges? & if so how was the sharpness comparison? And did you test the video AF with these too? That’s where sigma has been behind a bit, auto focus for video has always been a bit clunky & slower! I’m interested ✌🏼

6:43 Sharpness isn't something I've ever wanted in bokeh, and the edges on the lights looks better on the Sony for mine, but the CA difference is legit (athough at this point probably not noticable except when peeping). The Sigma definitely seems like the lens to choose all things considered though - especially the price!

To be honest... I'm more interested in testing both lenses at f/2.8 or f/4. My experience with the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 and the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 is that the CA is terrible when shooting backlit at f/1.4. So how does this new E-Mount Sigma 85mm do?

how often did you get to use 1.4 on your shoot , i use nikon 1.4's and rarely get to shoot at 1.4 indoors its do able outdoors its not so , unless your in shaded areas .

Aside from the sharpness aspect, maybe I'm seeing things. Even though the settings are the same, I think the Sigma produced slightly warmer tones as well. To me, this is just as important in a portrait lens. Granted, you can color correct, but it's nice to get that result without taking the extra step. Am I imagining the difference?

if you care so much about the colours, you should profile your lens and use the profile, then the slight differences in shades don't matter at all

@Gap I guess everyone missed the part where I said "you can color correct" But after a while, those minutes add up. All things being equal, the Sigma renders warmer tones which is what I like for a portrait lens. Is that all right?

The Samyang/Rokinon 85 1.4 is a great lens. I have been using it since the day it came out. Focus is great for stills with the latest firmware. I love the warm rendering. The out of focus areas are smooth but look busier than the GM and the new Sigma. It is not a big deal unless you are really into that kind of shooting. It has 9 blades instead of 11 as the new Sigma. The Samyang is a great deal at $599.

@@DiegoTerzano The only thing that pushes me away from Samyang are reports from users that Samyang lenses tent to loose their sharpness over time. Either they are prone to damage more than all those sigma/sony tanks or they are just poorly constructed and it does not matter if users take care of them or not. Even Dustin's Abbot Samyang 85mm got worse overtime.

Sigma bokeh has rather harsh edges, almost verging on the soap bubble effect. 🤔

yeah I don't like how Jared was going on about the sharpness of the bokeh like that was a good thing. Bokeh isn't meant to be sharp. It's distracting. It's really obvious at the examples at 14:36 how the sIgma bokeh balls are cat's eyeing and weirdly sharp, while the GM has a nice soft blurrier background, like a painting. Different strokes for different folks. If you like sharp as hell bokeh go for it. It could be a stylistic choice for why you might prefer the sigma over the GM or vice versa.

I'm confused now. Isn't the Samyang (aka Rokinon) 85mm f1.4 not also a native lens for mirrorless and developed first for E-Mount before it got adapted for Z and RF? This would make it a native E 85 1.4 too and a steal for its price, but of course with a certain trade off in quality I guess. Would love someone comparing all 3 against each other. So pls share links if you know someone doing that!

I downloaded the dng files and yes, this lens is razor sharp but the colour is very drab, I was expecting a lot more quality in the colour rendering. They obviously have not been finally edited but still disappointed. I get nicer colour Raw files sooc on my A7R111, any ideas why?

Definitely the Sigma and not because it is less expensive, but because it is a better quality lens. The sharpness variance was obvious, the color rendition and background support were superb. What's really amazing, to me anyway: at 13:40 I could tell the Sigma was sharper than the GM while looking on my phone, BEFORE Jared zoomed in. I hope Sigma works similar magic with lenses for the RF mount!

never had any problems with aperture rings accidentally change... why make such a big deal out of it

is it just me or does the photo look way better in the "viewfinder" at 10:10 then it does later in the final image at 10:12? Is this because of editing? It seems a bit too bright for my taste

Just curious... What do you guys who shoot portraits look for in a lens? Surely sharpness isn't a primary consideration?

yea, tack sharp focus on the eye is of the utmost importance to me.

I own a few art lenses including the magnetic 105 1.4 and love them. With that said, sharp bokeh is not a desirable thing. It becomes a distraction. I believe Sony intentionally kept that lense soft as it is more desirable for portraits.

10:32 "there are the only 2 options", there's also the Samyang 85mm f1.4. The Sigma is sharper, but the Sony has a much better rendering, the problem is that the bokeh balls are sharper too, you want them look softer, look at 11:56, the "softer GM" photo actually looks a lot nicer, it has this "dreamy" look that the left photo doesn't have.
