@@youknowwho9247 If they are on EF, though, they can just get the adapter and ride it out until native RF glass is good. I feel like most people will do that. Great review. This lens has been getting lots of mind space lately. I re-watched your video on the Zeiss Otus 85mm. If the Zeiss is still the ultimate 85mm, how close would you say this lens gets close to that level?
@DustinAbbottTWI3 жыл бұрын
This lens has one major flaw (that strong pincushion distortion), but outside of that it is a treat. The Zeiss has supremely special color/contrast, that the Sigma can't match, but I think the Sigma is probably very close in sharpness and general contrast.
@troyphillips10773 жыл бұрын
Don’t have any Sony bodies but love your reviews and like knowing about how Sigma is progressing. They really seem to actually have been changing or accelerating the change In optical design . Pretty much all companies have followed the (followed) i said , the designs Sigma has made . It started with the art lenses for dslrs. All of them were bigger but pushing new optical designs . Now they started the same trend starting with the 35mm f/1.2 . Then started now working on building smaller. We saw them starting this (learning)with the APSC primes they made the 16,30 and 56. Sony is the master at this at the moment I think . Look at the new 12-24 f/2.8 as an example . We are going through a time period of new optical revolution and learning. Nikon is making ground in other areas and working on the smaller,lighter design theory. Not all of their lenses are but as a system whole . Canon is building beautiful but big and heavy f/1.2 glass . Tamron is pushing the limits on the image quality of lower end product. So everyone has their paths at the moment but it’s all working towards a more perfect image . Taking away as many imperfections all the way to the edges of the frame. Bokeh is getting softer too but I don’t believe always prettier but more techinal looking . The whole modern perfect look isn’t as pretty to me and I kind of like the imperfections in many old lens designs. This is why I shoot both modern and old (Nikkor ai , ais and non ai ) but also some of the latest Sigma art and Nikon e . I still have DSLRs though . By the way because of your review I just purchased the Sigma Art 28mm. I think it’s modern with some character. I a few months back got the Sigma Art 40mm . It has almost no character but perfection. I got rid of my Sigma Art 50 for this lens and now see where there was some character to the 50art . I’m still happy with my purchase.

Hi Dustin, thanks for making this video. I have been using the 85mm GM for a few years now and my main complaints are it's weight and focus speed (it's okay with posed shots but struggles with active kids). Does it make sense to sell the GM and get this lens? Depreciation hurts but I would be effectively be spending nothing for this "sidegrade".
@DustinAbbottTWI2 жыл бұрын
That's a very hard question. The AF is bertter on the Sigma, and yes, the size is better. I guess it would depend on how well you can do on the sale of the GM. If you can get a good price, then sure, otherwise I'd hang onto the GM. I suspect a MK2 is coming for the 85GM, so I think the price will take a hit when that happens.

I am curious how it compares to the new Canon RF 85 L f1.2 ? it seems to me it must be very close, but I wonder how close. you really praised the canon lens as being like Otus quality, and didn't hear you praise this Sony lens in quite the same way. so I am curious about your opinion, even if you don't actually do a side by side. even tho I would love to see a side by side of two portraits with a blurred out back ground. I am mostly wondering how the contrast and the separation from the subject compares, and the quality of the blur. considering that the Canon is over twice the price. but also twice the weight at 1190 gram. so other than the Canon being f1.2, does it have an image quality edge. because it definitely loses with it's Price, weight and size ( I can't wait for Nikon to put out a fast 85 )

Great in depth review as always! I do have a question, I'm seriously considering purchasing this lens & selling my 85mm GM. My issue is that the GM has a hard time focusing in low light conditions & the focus hunts in & out, it drives me crazy! I shoot mainly low key boudoir photography. Another thing is that the GM isn't tact sharp at f/1.4, I have to bump it up to f2 to get tack sharp focus on my subjects eye, so how does the Sigma 85 focus perform under low light conditions? Any input would be greatly appreciated...Aloha

The 85mmRF is in a different league really which is very comparable with the Zeiss Otus range, A better comparison for the price of the new Sigma would be against the new Samyang 85mmRF for Canon, but think the Samyang might win out due to the Sigma's poor distortion, but optically they wouldn't be too far apart, Dustin would probably tell you better as he's used and tested the lenses.

I know most of the reviews compare the Sigma 85mm DN with Sony's 85mm GM, but how does it compare to the Sony 85mm 1.8 FE? In your review last year of the Sony 85/1.8, that lens was already facing stiff competition. The Sigma 85mm DN is clearly superior to the Sony 85mm/1.8, but at twice the price and weight. Also, other reviewers have noted having to stop down the 85mm DN a bit to have better focus/sharpness away from the center. As a hobbyist, wondering if the 85mm/1.8 is sufficient to have in this focal length.
@DustinAbbottTWI3 жыл бұрын

Yesterday I've tested Eye AF and focus speed on the SIGMA 85 1.4 DG DN ( Sony ). I have to admit I am quite disappointed. When the subject walks slowly towards me ... out of 10 photos, only 2-3 were in focus (all shoot on F 1.4). I've tried the lens on 3 different Sony bodies (a73, a74, and a7s3) and everywhere the same thing. I also tried it with different AF settings and speeds, good lighting conditions, backlight, etc. In comparison... the Sony 85 1.8 with the same settings ( shoot at F 1.8 ) and the same conditions missed only 1 photo of 10. Does any other Sigma owner have the same case?

I hope this philosophy extends to prime lenses and zooms that are really native to the sony system. I think about an update of mine with A7IV, sigma 14-24mm f2.8, 85mm f1.4, 50mm could be f1.2 and sigma could go for a 200mm f2.0 or f2.8. it would be a good discussion. My two cents
@DustinAbbottTWI3 жыл бұрын
I agree. I think Sigma needs to move away from always having to do something extreme (larger maximum aperture at a focal length, for example), and instead just make exceptional lenses that are reasonably sized.

I guess they will produce software to compensate for focus breathing too.
