its been awhile but, roll the eng up to 1600, then turn hydraulic pump on, then increase throttle to engage rotor and engine. Split the needles to engage the mechanical connection, then run it up to operating RPM. I'm flying the S64 and the S61 now. I would like the opportunity to fly the S58 again.

@@currentriver4951 every single video i have seen of these they have radial engine with 2 speed trans. you'll hear them start up, run 1st speed up, drop clutch, go to 2nd, then run 2nd speed up to operating rpm. for instance in this video from 2:23 to 2:53 it runs up, rpms drop, then another gear is selected, and rpms start climbing down low again and another run up of a gear. i will accept the fact that maybe it is a torque converter... but damn if that is true, it sounds sloppy as shit as how long it takes to switch between gears and the drop in RPM

@currentriver4951
@currentriver4951 3 жыл бұрын
@@56WagonWheel I've seen a tail rotor out of balance do that, but bounce is usually quicker. I really doubt bent shaft, it definitely wouldn't last long. It could also be a mount bearing for the driveshaft. If i was really looking i would concentrate on tail fold and airframe integrity, if everything else checked. We had a CH53D that bounced so bad, nobody would fly it, and we spent close to a year trying to find problem. Sometimes it's just them Gremlins!!

@VMCAviationVideos
@VMCAviationVideos 3 жыл бұрын
I don't have the answer to that
@nzrailmaps
@nzrailmaps Жыл бұрын
Cars need multi speed gearbox primarily for a wide speed range. In a helicopter the rotors run at the same speed all the time it is operating so a gearbox is not needed to give a range of speeds. The clutch is engaged on the ground when the load on the rotors is lowest and never disengaged unless the engine fails. There is enough engine power at the point of clutch engagement to achieve this without stalling the engine.
@noshsreqd
@noshsreqd Ай бұрын
There's a fluid coupling or torque converter between the engine and transmission that allows for engine startup and bringing rotors up to speed, once rotors are turning then the engine is idled down to allow the one way clutch to engage and then it is positive direct drive for flight.

I wonder how the Wright radial engine is cooled?
@johnmcphail2726

It's air cooled, of course - it's a big radial???
@Glen.Danielsen
@Glen.Danielsen 8 ай бұрын
@@johnmcphail2726 In B-17’s, the whole radial was exposed directly to cooling airflow. In the S-58, it’s fully hidden with a few vents.

These Indian mechanics came up with the idea of ejection seats for their choppers, never took off!
@robertworcester6824
@robertworcester6824 3 жыл бұрын
Sikorsky actually did develop ejection seats for helicopters in the mid 70’s. My dad was in the test phase of it. They used rocket sled at Holloman AFB as I recall. Pyrotechnics blew blades, glass then seat, in that order. There’s a cool video of it on KZfaq.
