2 Silky saws in a hazel coppice. Is it worth the extra for a Katanaboy saw, or is the Big Boy good enough? Pay your money and take your choice.

Mine is the Big Boy…does everything well. Climb a tree, hold on to a branch with your left hand & cut deadwood with your right. Super tool. No gas or oil.

Brilliant demo Stephen, spoilt by abysmal camera work - bin it! I counted the number of strokes and the elapsed time for each cut. The comparison between the saws would be fairer it you had stated what the blade is in the bow saw. There are two patterns made: Peg teeth for seasoned or dry wood and Raker teeth for green wood. The Jap blades have a very sophisticated pull cutting raker tooth design but Silky is not the only brand. I have some curved 14 inch pruning saws etched with the Echo brand which cost me £12.00 which were probably made in the same factory as Silky brand. I can see no difference in tooth geometry. The Japanese are the masters of multiple branding one product to swamp a target market across all price ranges. The Citizen digital watch movement is the classic example - available in cases costing retail from £3.50 to £500.00 or more. Following the 1987 storm I removed with a 36 inch Sandvik Type 23 raker tooth bow saw a 5 leader Beech tree that fell across a B road in the Chilterns. It took me 120 minutes because the bow limited the depth of cut but I would not use my chainsaw because I will never use a chainsaw alone. There were many incidents reported where good samaritans working alone damaged arms or legs or suffered severe facial injuries from kickbacks. Some lost their life. I have now retired from conservation work after 17 years on nature reserves in the Chilterns since I retired from business at 65, planting new woods and clearing Hawthorn scrub to do so. Most of the time I was working alone so the Type 23 blade was my trusty ally. Regards, Peter

Started using Silkys a couple years ago. The way they taper from the teeth to the spine keeps pinching to a minimum which takes the workload way down, it's a huge difference.

Hi I have watched this a number of times. I have used Silky saws for many years. I love them, I am looking at the katanaboy. But a big but is from what I have seen on many reviews is the Big Boy 2000 XL dose a very good job and cost half the price. I mite go for that. Save some cash.

very interesting, do u find you get quicker growth of the thinner shoots by just taking some shoots instead of clear cutting the whole crown ?

Pruning saws over shears does not damage the bark and fracture the calcium which result in faster wound healing

Say Heah Stephen, Cheers. I have the Silky Bigboy2000. But for what I do in the bush, I can't imagine carrying that Silky Katanaboy500. Oh, I think it's super, but it's a Tank and it just doesn't seem like it could cross the bridge over into Bushcraft. I think it's way too big, well because the Bigboy2000 works good and carries Ok in the Scabbard. Dilly Dilly.,,.p

Depends what you want. If I wanted survival tools for bushcraft I’d use something smaller. The Bigboy is terrific for most uses, having now had a longer trial I would say the Katanaboy is more powerful and better for thicker trees, but it costs far more and won’t fit into a backpack.

Stephen Hayes Stephen, your content is quite valuable and I have learned a fair bit from you. Your speaking quality is also good. You explain things well. When I switched cameras, and slowed down my movements, the jiggle was much improved. A simple phone camera these days is far better than what you use. Image stabilization and decent sound on my I-phone. We both do videos on trees and Tree care so I understand your content process. Editing is also important. Happy New Year

Stephen Hayes If you get an iPhone you will absolutely love it. I have an old 4S and it still works flawlessly. Worth every penny and it takes beautiful photos. In the US for .99 a month I can keep all my pics on the cloud. My best friend has a Galaxy and trying to have a conversation with her is torture, the sound cuts out and it can’t even pick up a signal in certain places in her house.

i tried that, epsom salt bath, tore out a marble sized chunk of flesh, it's still there. i think it went to my bone, a big 4ftx8ft sheet of OSB was being unloaded off the hood of my roof rack and it slid down and i stupidly caught it with my hand, inserting a toothpick-like splinter in the palm of my hand. i worked all day on my shed roof with an inch long splinter in me, that night i pulled out a half inch. this was october22. then around november 15 i pulled another quarter inch spolinter out, and around then is when i went to the doctor. it's still in me but the pain is very manageable, two days ago more small stuff came out. i might have it forever, who knows. I went to Sparrow Health Care in Michigan. The doctor literally tried for two minutes to remove it, he never once grabbed a magnifying glass or anything to aid his vision, he just blindly stuck pliers in me. after i went home with the splinter still in me, i got a bill two weeks later for $354, it was $115 for the office visit and $249 for a Foreign Body Removal Simple. nothing was removed, i called Sparrow Healthcare to complain, and the lady over the phone told me too bad, she rudely said I signed paperwork stating they can charge whatever they see fit. the doctor that saw me was younger than me and very poorly trained and foreign. i told them i'm not paying anything, they can piss off.
