Take a look at the Silky Bigboy its a bit smaller but quite honestly I find this saw a little too big and cumbersome and I much prefer the size of my Silky Bigboy. Jason

+briargoatkilla Lol, well I am sorry if I cause some marital strife, but I think you would really like this saw for your deer camp chores. The blade seems to be fairly stiffs and I didn't have problems with it wanting to bend on me when I would bind it. I only cut dead wood in this video which it did great at but I tried it on some live Willow I have here at the house and it went through it like butter. The saw is expensive but I figure most of us are willing to dump over hundred on a good knife so why not for a good quality saw. Jason

+lizzoid I have to opportunity to use the 500 a lot and I think its about as big as I would want to go for myself, even it can be a somewhat of challenge to use unless the log is very stable allowing you to step back and really take advantage of the full throw of the blade. I have really found the Bigboy to be my preferred saw most of the time. Jason

Or, if you have an axe with you also, use that as a makeshift wedge. I carry a Silky GomBoy, KatanaBoy 500 and an Estwing 16" Camper's axe in my Jeep, so I have an axe to use as a wedge if needed. -- BR

+Coyote Works I honestly haven't weighed it, mainly because I could tell by holding that it would be no problem to pack. I actually picked up a Cold Steele Pipe Hawk and between the two of those items I think I will have my wood processing handled in fairly lightweight setup. Jason

I have the Silky Big Boy, which has a blade about twice as long as the Bahco Laplander, but that katanaboy looks like it can do some serioux cutting.

+John Lord I can''t say I totally agree with you, the Katanaboy I felt was very firm and I did not notice the whippy action you talk about, plus I have used bucksaws and feel for the most part there handles have a tendency to shift in the hand and they don't like to cut straight. If your an ultra light summer hiker then I would agree something like the Bahco Lander is really all you need, but for winter camps in my area at least, a Bahco or comparable size saw definitely would not be my first choice as I am trying to get wood that will burn longer (6 to 8 inch rounds) and since we don't have hardwood I have to use pine or fir and 4 inch and smaller size pieces burn too quickly. As for packability the size and weight of the Katanaboy is comparable to my folding Bucksaw and it eliminates the need for smaller folding saw so in the end your actually cutting pack weight down. I definitely appreciate your thoughts on this matter but I have personally used axes, bucksaws, bow saws, small folding saws and tomahawks for winter wood processing and outside of using a chainsaw I feel the Katanaboy leaves them all in the dust when it comes to cutting firewood to manageable lengths keeping in mind I am after 6 inch and larger size rounds. If you have hardwood and a stack of 4 inch pieces of wood will keep you burning a nice fire through the night with out having to re-feed it every hour then I can see where the Katanboy may be overkill but even at that I would choose one of the smaller Silky folding saws over a bucksaw. I hope you don't find my response argumentative it is just my thoughts based on my experience with the different tools in my area, I really do appreciate your comment. Jason

Yes, though if I had to do it all over again I think I would just get the Bigboy, the Katana boy is great but unless what your cutting is secured and you can use both hands it can be a little difficult to use, the Bigboy can still cut good size pieces of wood and be handled with one hand. I also recommend the medium tooth blade as it seems to work well on seasoned and green wood. Jason

Jason, Thanks for your insight. I was also thinking that the Katanaboy did seem a little too big, and as you have shown in some other video's, the non-bushcraft chainsaw works fine for those times when you need to process some big stuff...quickly. LOL. I'll enjoy your next adventure.

It is still a good working saw, but I found I liked the smaller Silky Big Boy better, its lighter and easier to use one handed. Jason

all true, but this thing is lighter and doesn't need fuel and packs down to a very slim package and doesn't make nearly as much noise which is perfect for going thru the woods when you're trying to hide from socialist dictators

+Gary Cloud I don't know I haven't weighed my bucksaw or the Katanaboy but I would say they are very comparable. If I remember when I get home I will weigh them but I feel the difference is going to be insignificant. Jason

We all have our own opinions and I say use what works best for you, but I will use my Silky all day every day and twice on Sunday over the Sven saw. Jason

I have no way telling how many hours you can get out of a blade there are far too many factors involved, at this time I do not know if you can sharpen it, at this point I have not needed to sharpen or replace the blade. Jason

+James Ritchie I respect your opinion, but I couldn't disagree more. I would love to see you do a video and show me cutting 13 inch log that is laying close to the ground like the one I show in this video, I am not saying bucksaws can't cut wood good, I have a bucksaw with Bahco dry wood blade and it cuts awesome not as good as the Silky in my opinion but the big problem is I can't cut large wood because of the handle, in fact the handle is always in the way, have you ever tried to trim a tree with tons of branches with a bucksaw. So can a bucksaw cut wood absolutely but the handle makes it clumsy and cumbersome and the Silky's are just far more versatile in my opinion. Jason

Philippe Clemens Langemeyer I agree. This thing is impractical, massive and doesn't do anything q good Bucking saw couldn't do for a quarter of the weight and price.

Nothing except cutting larger wood in half the time for a 1/4th the effort. My time and effort is worth a little more. I enjoy camping. Cutting wood with inefficient equipment is not fun.

Richard Lamoreaux So do I and a 20 inch axe and a 21 inch bow saw have never left me unfed, cold overnight or without hot drinks. You stick to your logging and I will stick to my tools.
