I went to look for fossils, and to explore a famous smuggler's tunnel; I found both less, and more than I'd hoped for.

Tom, I wanted to share how you have inspired me. I've been watching your channel from the early days. This summer I went to London and I went Mudlarking. I found many things but it was all the blue and white China fragments that truly charmed me. I went back to the river, both sides, three more times and took home many blue and white fragments. Earlier this month I applied silver foil to the edges of piece, glued a pendant finding to the back, used headpins to make tree hangers and I was able to decorate a small Christmas tree. It's so pretty. I wish I could share a picture, but, hopefully my description will do.

Happy Christmas Tom!!! The reddish brown rocks are most likely septarian nodules they are pseudo-fossils but technically they are rocks. They are concretions of iron rich mudstone which over time would desiccate forming angular cracks. Those voids would be later filled with aragonite or calcite from calcium reach liquids migrating through the rock. They are relatively easy to polish. Maybe its something to try in your rock tumbler if you would find samples small enough.

Tom, in Michigan we call those stones Lightning Stones. It’s said that was the name given them by the indigenous Americans. They are Septarian nodules. They started out as bacterial colonies over a billion years ago. At least here the crystal veins are Calcite. They are very beautiful polished and sliced.

As a child, i visited Robin Hood's Bay several times, and stayed in that little white house with the round windows right in front of the beach. I have such strong memories of playing on that beach, finding fossils with my grandparents, going to the sweet shop and the fish and chip shop, going on a ghost walk, and learning about the history in the village museum. Robin Hood's Bay is such a beautiful place, and the history is truly amazing. Did you know that it is named after Robin Hood because he supposedly stayed in the village after a near fatal fight with one of the Sheriff of Nottingham's men? The story goes that he was nursed back to health and healed by the ocean air and the healing plants of the local area. All in all, it was great to see you explore this area, and it brought me a lot of nostalgia. Love the videos!

The mention of an old dump in Robin Hoods Bay reminded me of the 2008 cliff fall here in Lyme Regis that exposed a Victorian dump. I find it much more interesting then marine fossils. Lots of car parts, engines and the like strewn all over the shore. But also reminders of peoples lives before us. Most finds are inkwells, bottles, nails and coins etc. Lovely video and most enjoyable commentary, thanks.

Merry Christmas Tom. I've been watching your videos on my husband Mike's account and had to come subscribe on mine so I can comment. I am a mineral collector and I believe your mineralized balls are septarian nodules. It's a mud fossil filled with calcite. If you have a uv light, next time you are there around dark put your uv on one then take it away. It could have a glow in the dark effect as many do, and certain formations of calcite. It is called Phosphorescence. Just a very fun little experiment. A lot of fossils will also glow in uv light. The nanometers needed should be found on Google by searching "what wavelengths of uv does calcite Phosphoresce under." Hopefully that will get you there. Loved this video, and hope to see more in the future 😀

We holidayed there with family several years ago and spent many happy hours on that beach hunting for fossilized treasures! Have you and your lady ever visited Lindisfarne island? It's such a magical place with many treasures to be found on its gorgeous beaches. We once spent a summer holiday there and I've never forgotten the absolute peace of the place, especially once all the day-trippers had fled back across the causeway to escape the rising tide. Being woken by the sound of the seal colony singing during the night is one of my happiest memories.

Alas, it's not me playing the Cello. It's an instrument my parent's couldn't afford when I was young and wanted to play, so I learned flute instead. Then, when I had the money to buy my own instruments, a saxophone, drums, and guitars were what I went for. Maybe one day I'll get a Cello, and learn... but until then, I must pass my music to others for different instrument renditions of them.

@@tomburleigh9261 Ahh I see! I feel very lucky to have gone to school when music programs were well funded here in the US. Still, I was never able to afford many of the instruments I learned in school. My dream is to someday have an entire barn just filled with musical instruments and recording gear, and the free time to play them all. Maybe I’d even be lucky enough to have other musicians like you stop by and have a go. I’m not getting younger, but I haven’t given up hope.

Hi Tom, the geoid like thing with the veins you're talking about at 08:33 is a septarian nodule. The white veins are calcite and the brown matrix is Aragonite or siderite. They're a form of concretion, so your guess about having started around a shell or something similar is correct. They can be really beautiful when polished. I suspect the lumpy rock your saw around 06:32 was also a septarian nodule too, but you're just seeing the aragonite/siderite matrix.

The ones you call a marble nodule is actually calcite veins. They appear to be septarian nodules.
