You smashed it in this video mate. Loved all the early information, and I completely agree with everything you decided in relation to the trees. The first styling is spot on. The second collected tree just needs leaving alone and it will be fine, and the final one has loads of options going forward for you to explore as you slowly reveal the bones of the tree. I believe in your hands that will become a really characterful Bonsai. Perhaps not a classical style, but definitely representative of the very old birch that we see in nature scratching out an existence by an old stream.

Thanks Tony. The mic died part way through that final tree so I had a lot more to say about possibly changing the planting angle, and also noting your shared love for silver birch, and expressing my gratitude to you for letting me take on these beautiful trees That first tree in particular is already looking an exceptional beauty and next year deserving of a really nice pot. 👍🙏

Nice comprehensive breakdown of the species and also good to see someone who can keep their hands in their pockets - so to speak. I do agree when you say it is better to leave it alone when you have no clear plan or need to do anything. I fear if I had got hold of those then the second one would have been cut back to a foot high and the third one would have lost at least one of those three trunks. BUT...your approach is equally valid and definitely safer for the tree. Cheers for this Jason.

Thanks for this feedback Xavier. There would have been more narration on that third tree, including options for changing the planting angle, but the mic died and I added the voiceover after. As for that first tree, I’m really pleased with how that turned out. 🙏

Good to see you’re giving this beautiful but problematic species a go Jason❤ I swore I would never touch them again twenty years ago after losing so many major branches but having seen the Dennis Vojtilla birch that won the 5th US National best deciduous I have decided to try again and am having much more success. Removing the ever sprouting suckers, keeping them regularly cut back but not restricting the branch options too much seem to be working for me. The young trees develop the mature bark much better if grown in the ground until the colour develops. In your case with Yamadori they were obviously collected with good bark colour. Good plans for your trees. Keep us posted.

A very nice collection of birches Jason. Have to say I have always liked birches as trees, but as bonsai they can be somewhat problematic with branches randomly dying. Your trees all seem to be looking well and good

Thanks Gavin. That first tree in particular looks beautiful now the upward growth has been gently coaxed into a weeping canopy. I will need to think about a suitable display pot for that come spring. 🤗

Indeed, they are beautiful! Birch is my favorite tree in nature. Wish there were some subspecies with small leaves.

Two of these collected silver birch do indeed have small leaves - much smaller than the third tree.

Hi Jason 😃 What an awesome video about these perfect trees. I love birches and learned a lot today. Your trees are gorgeous. I do have a couple of silver birches as well as paper birches, from collected seeds in Ireland. Never heard about a chocolate birch before. Love it. 😍 I would not have done anything different. Thank you so much for sharing 🙏 All the best 🙋‍♀️ Cheers Martina

Man...Birches Be Tippin' Here we have River Birch in Eastern U.S. and they are always losing their twigs even with the slightest breeze it seems. They sprout from seed everywhere so I suppose they might make good practice bonsai. I think your styling decisions were realistic and I look forward to seeing the next steps in their development, this makes me want to give Silver Birch a try. I liked your choice of music in the video, very relaxing.

Very informative Jason, I only have one young silver birch that is hidden away in my border. Austin hasn't found it yet. It is already weeping but not acquired its silver trunk yet. I think it can stay there for two years, it is on a tile ,so roots should be good. Keep growing.xx

Great video Jason, nice little species guide and informative work on your trees. I think that last tree is definitely a challenge. I'm not a fan of the lowest branch unless you removed everything else and had that as the only trunk.

Love the video and birches. Years ago when I designed gardens in NYC we planted a hybrid called crimson frost birch - magnificent white smooth trunks with bright rust red branches and fabulous autumn yellow. Wish I could find them again now that I’m doing bonsai!

In fact I was considering that, but didn’t actually get to it in the video. I may just check the roots to to ensure they are not under attack from vine weevil.

I am really enjoying this channel. The videos are pithy....just the right amount of information, nicely presented. Currently, I am air layering a Betula Jacquemontii for next year ( all being well!)... So this video is most welcome. Incidentally, I am also air & ground layering a Fagus Sylvetica Asplenifolia.. Cut leaf beech... Ideal larger bonsai in my expectation.. Has anyone got experience of working with this tree or the dwarf alternative ' Mercedes '?

Hello Jason. Was it difficult to replace the dead birch tree in your forest? I have a larch forest of nine trees, and I lost two of them, next to each other, but I have no idea of what the process will be, of course, in spring.
@TheBonsaiGarden
@TheBonsaiGarden Жыл бұрын
Hi Mary, it was relatively easy. I cut a wedge out with the dead tree, like cutting out a slice of cake, found a suitable replacement tree and planted that, recovering with the surface layer from the wedge I cut out. It now just needs to develop over the next few years to successfully catch up with the others. This might help: Working on my Silver Birch Bonsai Forest kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n9BdrMyGzqvDoZ8.html
