I've had my silver lab for eight years. I've been around all hunting breeds and owned a Chesapeake Bay retriever. I bought my silver puppy to bird hunt with, and as a companion. He is now 8 years old, in good health and weighs 78 pounds; he is trim and fit. All dogs are different, so here is what I see in my 8 years old, male: Weird coat? Yes, just as you described. Dandruff? No, but we use fish supplements and oatmeal shampoo to prevent it. Tight eyelids? Yes, even at 8 years old. Needy? Yep, wants to be touched all the time. Bark excessively? No. He has a strong, loud, intimidating bark and uses it sparingly. Will he retrieve a bumper? Yes, just as good or better than any dog in the video, but not endlessly like some field trial dogs I have seen. Afraid of guns or loud noise? Heck no! Loves the shotgun. He retrieves upland birds with excellence. He also points game birds (self taught, I did not see that coming!) and flushes them very well. He will water retrieve ducks but he doesn't LOVE water like most labs. His thin coat is great in the south, but probably not as good for a cold climate. BTW He sheds very little, which we love. He is one of the most attentive and intelligent dogs you will find. Wants to please his master. He can be registered as a Silver Labrador, but if I had to bet, there is a Wim gene or two in there somewhere. Great video thanks!

We have 2 Silvers and a charcoal, my best friend has a silver and a charcoal and I've noticed my silver male vs her silver female is more lively and playful not as easily tired, loves all types of water will chase the hose where as his sister her female will play tug of war water is okay. But not as active unless they are playing keep away from each other with a bone. My charcoal female is very much into water but not fetching. Then there's my silver English female. She is to the t exactly what he's talking about with them having the lack of energy and tiring quickly. I love all 3 of mine though. And I love his videos started watching them when we originally bought Phoenix. Everyone of the pups though have been amazing.

Stonie I saw this video years ago, then when a little bit after covid hit I found a rescue dog that I fell in love with. He's a silver lab. Charlie is the best dog ever. I was told he was a failed hunting dog that was a pure bread silver lab that a rancher gave up on. He's amazing. Learns on a dime. Fetches like a dream. Is the best emotional support dog I've ever seen. He's a needy boy, and when I sit on the porcelain throne, he is right there with me. Even though he takes to water like a duck, his coat isn't like a lab coat, there's no oil, and it gets soaked instantly. He doesn't have skin issues though. The eye lids tight. I love that dog. Everyone asks if he is a weimaraner. You know what? I don't care of he is. Best dog I've ever had.

I’ve had standard poodles for years (#4 in the works) and I’m looking forward to following your training guideline with the new pup. Loving the video. Just had my "purebred" Silver Lab Jager fail to lymphoma at only six. My perspective. After being around him for 6+ years, when I look at other labs now, they appear quite different looking and acting than the silvers. I definitely see the weimaraner in them. I have also clocked my pup at a sustainer run of 30 mph, which to the best of my knowledge is off the charts for a regular lab. So that's what I think. Couple of other comments. My Jager was a champion fetcher; he lived for it even before I trained him for hunting. He was extremely coordinated in every way and was all around more agile than a lab. His focus and attention was supreme, which also leads me to think maybe not "purebred" lab. I never spent enough time training for water fowl hunting and he seemed to naturally have the calmness and patience built in. Always still and quiet. He did have skin problems though. He did have major alopecia (hair loss) as well. Then you add the lymphoma in and a case of Blasto, tough to say he was healthy. But all around the most amazing, focused, calm tempered, and pleasing dog breed I have yet to witness. He looks and acts alot like your silver in this video.

A few years late, but that's what everyone misses about special color dogs. It's not really about "purity". It's the fact that special colors often require a damaging level of inbreeding where the product is just a pretty color instead of any functional trait. They come with health issues. This is a big problem with silver/lilac/isabella which are all names for the same color. The double dilute gene, which is responsible for any grey/blue dog and which turns chocolate into silver, causes auto-immune inflammatory issues that are most noticeable in the condition named after it: color dilution alopecia. This gene is also associated with a significantly lower lifespan, just like chocolate. Acting together, they are probably even worse for a dog. I wish people would stop idolizing and chasing rare colors as if dogs are collectible items instead of living things, when the dog's health and lifespan are negatively affected. Buying a dog for a harmful color, in my opinion, is totally despicable.

Thank you immeasurably for this video- I think you did a really good job objectively detailing the history behind the various theories speculating on the genetic makeup of these beautiful dogs. I am about to acquire a Silver Labrador soon, and had been reading so many conflicting, interesting, disturbing things online about them. I really appreciate the time you took to highlight the possible advantages, and the honest probable skin/temperament "problems" (problems being relative), that may (I like how you continually highlight that these are generalizations) come along with a Silver Lab. Your channel is awesome! Much appreciated.

I loved this video! I used to have a blue thailand ridgeback, and haven't had a dog in about 6 years. I finally convinced my husband to get a dog, and decided on a lab, to hopefully be easier to train. The silvery color is my favorite! The problem is, anything you read online about these dogs tends to be from breeders who vehemently protest the color, or breeders who sell the dogs and boost them up. Anyways, I found these training videos, and I'm hoping to prepare for whatever color lab I get for my family. Thank you for the informative and entertaining content!

I really appreciate your honest and unbiased, fair tests of silver labs. I was recently in the market for a new lab puppy and had done a bit of research of silver labs. I had some breeders tell me to stay far away and some say they have been the best dog. I personally wasn’t interested in taking a gamble with that kind of money. But after looking at a few chocolate, white/yellow labs I came across a silver lab puppy for sale and just fell in love. I could not believe how attentive to me she was, how stout she looked and her personality. I was very impressed with her physically as a puppy and ended up getting her. I think if I would have watched this video first I probably would have never gave her a chance since I wasn’t a huge fan of them anyway. So far she has impressed me with everything I have asked of her. She gives good clean straight lines. Charges hard when retrieving and learnes very quick. I still think like you that generally speaking silver labs are not as good as other colors but there are exceptions it seems. I also feel as tho there are multiple answers on how silvers came about. I think there are recessed gene chocolates that are full blood and also ones with mixed Weimaraner in there along the way. She is 2 months old now and at 5 months she will b going to a professional trainer to see what she can do. Hopefully if all goes good I will try her in akc hunt tests. Thank you again for you videos, they have been helpful with basic obedience and I like the way you think as a trainer.

Great video! Very informative for people potentially wanting to get a silver lab. Love your videos. I’ve been an English style lab person all my life, got my first silver lab pup I a year and a half ago and I don’t know if I’ll ever own anything else. He is so easy to train. So treat driven and ready to please. Has a great nose, is doing great hunting. He would go non stop all day if you let him. Great swimmer and retriever. He is quite athletic and wonderful dexterity, so sure footed in boats. He is also a great house dog well behaved fairly relaxed but more clingy than any other dog I’ve had. Takes attached at the hip to a whole new level but I personally love it. I think it makes him a better hunter because he cuts close to you. We did have concerns about skin and digestive issues but so far no issues! We do notice a little more dander in the dry winter months than we would with a nice oily smooth normal lab coat. There is a difference in the fur texture. He does have the droopy eye lids though. Personally I don’t care how he was made we love him all the more. In my opinion we have bred and mixed all dogs to meet our desires so breeding for a certain color is no different in making silver labs as long as it is done ethically and with best health in mind for the animal. Not sure what school of belief I agree with of whether they are actually a genetic abnormality (which does scientifically make sense) or if another breed was incorporated into their genetics (also makes sense) but either way I never really see the Weim traits in our pup. I could honestly see an argument for Pitt Bull though somewhere way back in the linage.

Well done on this one. It's always so common to see people attack silver labs with a purist attitude so it was good to see an unbiased comparison. My two-year-old silver, luckily, is full of energy, fetches really well, and can't get enough of the water. We are still teaching him more each day, but he has been pretty similar to most other labs he has been around. Maybe I lucked out or maybe it is just his bloodline, but either way the silver I ended up has turned out really well.

Thank you for providing an objective overview of the silver Labrador. I have a 6 1/2 year old silver lab that has been the subject of debate across our friends who have had both weimies and chocolate labs, and trainers I've worked with who fall on both sides of the fence. I adopted him from a rescue organization who pulled him from a relenquish case - basically classic story of someone paying $2000 for a puppy they weren't expecting to put so much work in until he de-squeeked their neighbor's chickens at 8 months old too many times.. I have his papers of where they bought him and you are spot on on the neediness. I call him my clingon. He also has those tight eyelids, almost almond shape. The line down his back is bristle like/almost wirey along the back. I've been lucky with his skin and fur as I've seen others with serious skin issues, but he does get dandruff! Your physical breakdown was exactly the way I viewed mine, down to the coordination issues. He's even tweaked his leg from cutting a corner too tight playing with my staffy mix. He's also got that naturally sweet temperament but a strange protective instinct to people who shouldn't be on the property uninvited, especially at night. I agree on the looks part, a reason why I partially adopted him and why I love bully breeds and Dobermans.

Another very nice video Stonnie, thank you. I seems to have got into the habit of watching your videos every week. Those are two lovely dogs, but Mr No Name gets my vote. From this side of the Atlantic he seems to be a hard working sweetheart with a great attitude, work ethic and lovely glossy coat. I’ve been trying some food work on the 6 year old show line golden cocker spaniel that I look after. He’s poorly trained, which is mostly my fault, and none of calm, attentive or polite, but he gets away with it because he is about the prettiest cocker spaniel you ever saw, in fact on average every week a complete stranger stops me in the street and tells me how beautiful he is, including random people driving by in their cars, stopping and shouting out their car windows. Anyway as with retrieving breeds he loves his food and I have been working with him on his leash manners with some success. He also has improved his response to sit, down and stay commands. It surprised me a lot, but he is much better than he was. He will never be polite, especially with visitors to my house but I’m very pleased with progress he has made in the last few weeks. Thanks a lot for your help. Incidentally I first got the idea of trying this a few weeks back when I stumbled across your old Malinois puppy food work videos from years ago. 🇺🇸🇬🇧

Actually the first time I ever heard about silver labs was back in the 70's I believe which I had seen an old advertisement from Kellogg kennels! Now I live close to Kellogg's and believe me there is a reason he would not ever let anyone enter his property without an appointment! Enough said about that! After 35 years of crunching canine genetics and training most hunting breeds for both hunting and competition trials here is my thoughts! With the silver Labrador retrievers which includes the champagne and charcoal coat colors. I would never want to see one of these dogs appear in any of my dogs lineage, believe me I won't! Reason being, I really don't care where the color came from but one thing I do know is they were bred strictly for their color and we all know what happens to breeds when they are bred strictly for color. Back in the early 1900's black litters would once in a while throw some brindle colored dogs and this goes back to some of the dogs they used to start the Labrador line. Back around 1910 there was never a mention of a silver colored Labrador however, by the 1950's they have appeared seemingly out of nowhere! My personal feeling is that the recessive or diluted d gene was in fact introduced by the Weimaraner (recessive d gene!) For those of you that do not know recessive genes are actually hidden genes which may not show themselves for many generations until they're mated with another dog with the same recessive gene and only if the gene hits! You can have a dog in a bitch that had the same recessive gene and sometimes neither gene will hit our only one of the genes would hit which would not create the silver coat color. However, if one would hit and the other not all of the puppies would carry the recessive gene for the coat color silver. This applies for all recessive genes whether it is something like Exercise Intolerance and Collapse (EIC) which is absolutely devastating and may not show up until the dog is a few years old. Hopefully he won't be in the water 50 yards out when it first shows itself. Over all the years I've been training and breeding I've only had this happen twice with customers dogs so I didn't know their lineage or whether they were tested or not and which the test for EIC has not been in existence very long! Of these two dogs I did manage to save one of them. He was only about 30 yards out when I noticed him having some problems and I figured I knew what he was inflicted with immediately so I was able to swim out and save him. The poor pup! Yes I'm a very soft trainer where I would rather take a little extra time somewhat similar to Mr. Dennis instead of putting hard pressure on the dogs because I don't think that gets you as good of results in the end! I'm very interested to see in the next upcoming years what geneticists find out additionally about this issue because at the current time they can only find the d gene but not where it came from! This is something I don't really understand but whatever. I have a feeling someone is doing their best to conceal this information as we have seen many other times in both dogs and horses! Yes I am a purist when it comes to Labrador Breed. Thehe thought of people breeding for coat color exclusively makes my stomach turn! The thing is people that are ignorant enough to simply breed for coat color will not concentrate on things like: HIP and Elbow Dysplasia and the need for the OFA Certification United Anconeal Process (UAP) Fragmented Coronoid Process (FCP) Osteochondrosis dissecans (OCD) Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) Tricuspid Valve Dysplasia (TVD) Centronuclear Myopathy (CNM) Exercise Intolerance and Collapse (EIC) Narcolepsy (NARC) Confirmation Intelligence Tractability Hunting Ability (which a Labrador must have regardless whether he is going to be hunted or not. He must be able to retrieve simply because it should be in his jeans. If not in my opinion you have a sub-par dog especially when you consider all the other issues that more than likely were not taken into consideration when the breeders were doing the breeding!) I actually research several dogs when I'm going to breed my female and believe me they are all very high quality dogs which have achieved and done very well in the hunting and field trial competition circuit! I want the Line-Breeding coefficient to be no higher than 18 but not lower than 15. You mustn't do this for several generations in a row however! Only by proper line breeding and I'm not talking about inbreeding can you achieve an entire litter of superior quality puppies! If you do a straight out-cross, unless you're doing it simply to bring in other genetics you also want to include into your line. There really is no other reason to even do all this research because your puppies are going to be as different as puppies from a completely separate litter! If you have eight puppies 2 of them will be below average, 4 average, and 2 above average which of course is an average estimation but this is roughly how it works out to be. Now I just gave you many reasons to not even think about purchasing one of these off-color breeds, believe me there is a host of other reasons but many people will look past all of these things and purchase one of these sub-par dogs! It might work out great, best dog you've ever had! The simple fact is though most of the time it will be an extremely bad experience when generally you will have a dog that gets one of these diseases, only because his parents and/or the dog himself were not tested for these diseases and/or physical abnormalities! Many times you will end up having a dog with a shortened lifespan or have to put him down and this is just not worth it! It's not worth doing what it will do to your family who loves him and what it will do to you being you will have to live with the fact that it was your decision which has made your family be in so much pain! I have seen things like this happening literally hundreds of times personally. If not for this particular situation it was for other situations like the dogs parents were not checked for some of the situations I described above! All of this with not even mentioning you should never, ever breed any dog without doing the proper research on both parents lineage. To do this you need to educate yourself! Only by educating yourself and doing the research can improve the Labrador breed as a whole. This is the entire goal of reputable breeders, PERIOD!!!! Not money which there is little of if you do things correctly and if you're just breeding and not training because training is where you make the most money. Many times I have not even bred one of my females when I wanted to because I could not find a male that had the correct lineage I wanted so I let her go open. In all the years I have been breeding dogs and training I have never let one of my females produce more than two litters before I spayed her and either sold her as a very well-trained hunting, competition and family dog or just gave her away to a nice family that I knew could not afford what she was worth as a trained hunting dog. In my mind if I couldn't produce puppies that were better than both parents I didn't want to breed that line anymore! Keep in mind this was already a top female with the intelligence, confirmation and clean and precise lineage I was concentrating on. I always completely trained my dogs and especially my females I was thinking of breeding. I needed to know and understand any faults or weaknesses she had either physically or mentally. Now all of these things I mentioned are just a fraction of what you need to consider before you ever consider doing a breeding! I do understand however most people don't think like this and in fact think I don't know what I'm talking about! They think you can stick any two dogs together and have great puppies! LOL! The thing is you might get away with this sometimes, but for the most part you're not going to get away with it long and will only build a bad reputation for yourself. This in fact is insignificant to what you are doing to the dogs themselves and the breed in its entirety! I am sorry this message was so long because I didn't intend it to be that way. LOL!!!

Well done Stonie! My 2 cents, I've had 2 silver Labs. One, exactly like you described with energy level and lack of coordination. He has no idea he has a butt! lol The other all the way up to 10 years old was highly athletic. Amazing body control and his energy level was no quit. Two different lines of silvers. So as with most things canine, there's an exception. However both have had the coat issues just like you described. But at the end of the day, they are Labs and are wonderful. In 2 months I get my first black Lab...stay tuned, lol. Thanks for all you do...write a book dude, I'd buy it!

I have a silver lab his name is ash he is 7 months old. He is so calm and loves to be cuddled. He is very good around babies, toddlers, kids, adults,But when we got ash he was scared of men which is weird because we got him from my uncle who loved him so much but just wasn’t ready for a dog. He slowly adjusted to men and is fine around them. Ash is very very timid he gets scared and jumps easily, he isn’t aggressive at all and his bark is very very deep it can sound scary but trust me he won’t do anything. He is a great addition to our family and I love him so much. What’s funny is he follows my mom around all the time he is adorable we can tell who the favorite is lol. But anyways I love my sweet sweet boy and if you are wondering if this is a good dog for your family go ahead there wonderful!!

Yep, and I think that is it okay, that`s how we are wired, if you you like the looks of your dog you are more willing to put up with issues and more willing to put work into your dog relationship because hey, your heart soars when you come home and your beautiful (for you beautiful) dog is greeting you, it gives you joy and that is a big part of caring for a dog in my opinion. Love your videos Stonnie, am binge watching at the moment and send you Greetings from Vienna, Austria!

Maybe I should add to clarify I did not want to say that only looks is important and I would never recommend to chose a dog purely for looks, it is very important to think about what one expects from one`s dog, that is the top priority for me BUT I would also never get a dog that fullfills all my wishes and I do not like its looks! Both is important, one is allowed to have fun, pride and positive feelings when looking at one`s dog.

She will run up to a toy when I throw it, lay down and just chew on it instead of fetching lol :) She likes fetching sticks in the water though! So true about them following you everywhere too. At home or out in the wild- she always sticks by my side. She will run ahead a little but then she'll stop and wait until everyone catches up. Love my silver so much!

My friends have a 4 month old charcoal lab and I have been training her at our lake (they are my neighbours) using your techniques and she is very responsive. Being that she is a black lab base, but charcoal, do I assume she has weimaraner in her as well? Is chocolate to silver, the exact same thing as black to charcoal? Enjoyed the video! Thanks!
@DirtRockTeam

I have seen some of the coat issues pop up in chocolate labs also. My 13 year old boy has had dandruff his whole life. Our yellow lab has had none, the yellow one actually had more of the "traditional" oily coat. Our yellow one always had to be your side & wouldn't retrieve much if he didn't feel like it. Where as our chocolate will retrieve all day & is fine hiding in our room & sleeping on our bed versus being by your side. The difference in individual dogs within a breed & how they were bred & raised can be eye opening. Dilute alopecia is an issue with blue Dobermans also. I am not 100% convinced that all silver labs have Weimaraner in them. I do think there are dishonest kennels out there that have crossed the two & are still doing it for the extra dollars people are willing to pay for the coat color. But all 3 ideas you touched on make very valid & compelling arguments also. The world will never know how silver & charcoal labs 100% fully came about. But it shouldn't matter if you're getting the right dog for your family & lifestyle, should it?

I like your opinion and direct way of explaining it. Had a good Weimaraner for a long time and now I have labs. I see lots of weimaraner in a silver lab too. They just have a different style I guess...appearance, some behaviors, and different body language that says wiemer to me. I believe they were crossed a long time ago and dogs with the most “lab” like characteristics were breed since then. So genetically they are closer to labs now than Weimaraner. I’ll stick with my yellows but to each their own.

Is have an AKC American Silver. Best hunting dog I’ve ever had. Loyal and obedient to a fault. I think they’ve got Weimaraner in them. Temperament is very much the same. I’ve had two English Labs too. You can tell the difference in behavior, not just in the American/English difference. My Silver had a lot of the same attachment temperament as Weimaraners do. Still the best hunting dog I’ve ever had.

I have a 9 week old Silver, mine loves playing fetch. She also swims now too. So far she has been very easy to train. My main issue with Silvers is the way the lab community treats them. I tried to call several retriever trainers last week to try to get her duck training and they refuse to train her because she is a dilute and some of them have been down right rude and disrespectful. I live in Maryland and I am likely going have to take my dog all the way to North Carolina to get her trained because none of the trainers in state that I have talked to will touch her. I understand she probably won't be a championship level black lab level but she should be able to be trained to fetch a duck. My money isn't apparently green enough for them. oh and mine has the saggy eyes that you were referring too.
