Silverado 2500HD 6.0 LY6 BAD Engine Teardown. Our LS Builder Inspection Process With A Few Surprises

2 жыл бұрын

After last weeks N54 Teardown and the 911 video, I needed something I could do quick! I chose a 6.0 we just got in this same day. Its an Iron block, gen4 6.0L LS architecture engine, the LY6. This is a dished piston, non DOD/AFM engine with Variable Valve Timing, and 823 rectangle port heads. Sometimes, we will get a core or bad engine in that has been tampered with. Parts swapped, missing pieces, I've even had them missing rods and pistons! Thankfully the swindley stuff was relatively confined to one particular part here and I still will come out pretty well.
My name is Eric and I own and run a full service auto salvage business called Importapart located in the Saint Louis MO area. Part of our model is dismantling and selling parts from rare and niche market engines. I don't build or rebuild engines, we simply supply hard parts to those that do!
Want to see a particular engine torn down? I may have already done one! No really, check out my other videos for the engine you'd like to see! I've made over 70 other teardowns from a Cummins to an LS7, and from Rotary to Ram Ecodiesels. You can expect a new teardown every week!
Check them out here • Blown Up Engine Tear D...
For those that read the entire description... there will be a surprise teardown midweek! And no, its not my 996 Engine.
As always I appreciate all of the comments, feedback and even the criticism.
What will I tear apart next week? Just wait and see!
-Eric

Here’s one I had never heard of: bought a salvage yard Toyota 3.5 V6 which turned over beautifully by hand at the yard. Brought it home, replaced all the usual parts to freshen it up, figured I had better just make sure it still turns over before installation. Much to my alarm, it locked up hard in each direction after about 270 degrees of rotation. Pulled the heads and found one cylinder with a bit more carbon than the others. The process of using air tools during assembly vibrated loose the carbon, which then collected on one edge of the piston and prevented it from going up to tdc. Cleaned it up, closed it up and it’s still going strong 10 yrs later.

I felt my heart drop when you said it locked up in both directions. I probably wouldve started panicking "wtf is going on here" after spending all that money. At least you managed to find the problem and sort it!

The problem is the 6L80 and 6L90 transmissions. They are notorious for overheating. The torque converter is absolutely junk from the factory OEM. Billet cover and piston is a must. Also the thermostat in the transmission needs to be changed from the factory 200 degree one to a 140 degree. It costs about $900 for a good torque converter for those transmissions and about another $700 to have it installed. If you have over 60k miles on the transmission already, it's probably too late. To bad the torque converters were junk from the factory.

It doesn't matter how many parts are in the engine. As long as you have technical manuals available and a methodical approach they can all be successfully torn down and rebuilt properly. I play around with the twin cam Porsche 928 engines which a lot of people seem to shy away from. It's no different to rebuilding a lawnmower engine as long as you follow the correct processes and refer to manuals when you don't understand something. I really enjoy your videos 👍

Yes! Love 4 cyclinders. My favorite to work on is the go devil engine used on military jeeps. Iron Duke is my second favorite, once all the bugs are worked out you can get great mileage. Third is the hurricane, though it eats gas and has less gas mileage than the go devil. Fourth is Indian four from the late 30's, makes a great motorcycle. Five/ super duty 4 just a neat engine.

I've got an e46 coupe that I've got plans on building into an LS powered M3-GTR lookalike (as best as I can manage, anyhow). I can't exactly say when that will happen, as I'm a bit behind on bills as I do my best to finish up recovering from a motorcycle accident at the end of May. While I may not know exactly when I'll pull the trigger on buying the LS that will be the basis for that little monster, I *do* know that I'll be buying it from you. I've seen enough of your videos to know that you care about your business and your customers enough to make sure that you're not selling anybody a load of hot garbage, and as an honest mechanic, I appreciate that about you. It won't be today. It won't be tomorrow...but soon enough the day will come that I hit you up and we'll do some business. ...and brother, I don't mind telling you that I'm looking forward to it.
