Removing valve covers to clean and put new gaskets in. Not as hard as most think. Also cleaning up the engine bay some. 2002 Silverado 2500HD with 6.0 Vortec V8. "Project Midnight"

Very helpful! Great instructional video. I am now fully confident in doing this repair myself. Nothing like the valve covers of the 60's and 70's I grew up with.

These newer vehicles are actually engineered pretty well. I love o ring seals. Much better than the older stuff.

One thing I like about the newer engines is the o-ring style valve cover gaskets. Much better than the old cork gaskets! 👍

These engines are very easy to work on and seal back up. Very good design. I think if I ever get an older truck I might drop one of these LS motors in it.

I know I keep saying it but this generation truck was very well designed. These engines are also very well designed and relatively easy to work on. And almost bullet proof :)

Simple i just unplugged the wires from the coils and covered those with towels.. I did the passenger side first,, driver side was pulled apart in 5 min used a combination 8mm combination wrench that simple..really all you need is an 8mm & 10mm socket with extensions..also while the cover was off is sprayed carb cleaner into the rockers,no disassembly...great video simplified so it can be done by anybody

@@MrQuijaRICK Have not done an intake manifold yet but even that isn't to bad of a job. This newer stuff is really well engineered. GM did a pretty good job with this generation truck.

Trucks looking good mossman! I just did this exact procedure on my 08 silverado 1500 about 2 weeks ago, except I pulled all the rockers and push rods and did an extensive cleaning. Trying to get my lifters to quiet down, really wish GM hadn't put active fuel management on the NNBS trucks, nothing but problems. Excited to see what comes next

I have heard some of the newer trucks and it sounds like there is a sewing machine under the hood. Pretty sure that is because of the injection system not the lifters.

I would leave the spark plug wires attached to the coil packs while I removed the coil pack bracket I would just leave em next to the exhaust manifold down below while I swapped out the valve covers, helps save some time

Man, if all that junk is between the valve cover and the intake it probably wouldn't be a horrible idea to pull the intake and clean out the valley you will be surprisingly shocked what you find, also those gaskets on the intake are a common spot for leaking. I wish I could send you a pic of what mine looked like. Lets just say there was enough acorns in there to feed two families of squirrels lol!

The intake is another job for another day. I am hoping to upgrade that also. I am sure there is a bunch of junk under it. :)

Have the same thing mossman but a GMC...just did the knock sensors and intake manifold gasket while I was in there and noticed a slight rear valve cover gasket leak on the passenger side... going to get those gaskets too. LOL in your video I could see the air in that one tire....a maypop :o) My next seal will be the rear main ( I will take it somewhere for that) and that should button up all leaks...hate to see what that one will cost me

Thank you for this I serviced my 2002 yukon denali xl yesterday and the serviceman noted leaking around the head covers and oil coolant lines which he suggested I replace. Watching your video I think I may just renew the gaskets on the head covers but there was some concern that I couldn't renew the pcv valve as it's a part of the head cover. Any thoughts on this? Thanks

Not building a show truck so a detailed engine would be a waste of time. I would rather spend time on the exterior or interior of the cab. Something people and I will see a lot.

I just replace my cover gaskets. On startup, I had some smoke coming from the drivers side. Never noticed it before. Should I assume it’s just leftover oil burning off the engine? That I made a bad deal with the gasket? Or somehow I disrupted a worn out PCV valve and should replace it?
@mossman381
@mossman381 Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't worry about it unless it doesn't stop smoking.

I guess these were leaking? I suspect one or both of mine are, the back of oil pan, and up above it, get covered with oil over time. Looks like it is wet even up by the head, so I am thinking these may be the culprit. Does that sound similar to what you had?
@mossman381
@mossman381 4 жыл бұрын
I changed quite a few gaskets and I believe I slowed the oil leaks that I had. Oil pan, oil cooler and valve covers. I think I might have a rear main leaking or oil pressure sensor.

I have the same motor and just replaced my valve cover gaskets. When re-installing, I noticed that the covers just “rest on top”, not actually “sink in flush”. I still see the blue gasket around the edge after install. Is that normal.

I haven't had that year truck in awhile. Would like to get a stepside version of that year but the boxes are always rusted out on the top of the bed. For $900 it might be in really bad shape.

That isn't a shutoff. It's a Prestone thing that helps burb the air out of the system I think. I haven't used it since I bought the truck. There really is no need to shut off the coolant on these newer truck.
