One of the best rtv sealants I've ever used is Hondabond. Costs more than standard etc but that stuff will seal anything. Especially good in its adhesion to rubber, meaning it's very effective at sealing those corners where block meets covers, etc.

Ford has a grey silicone for 7.3L diesels as well that we used when we're serious. Can almost put it on against an oil drip and still count on it to seal.

Great great awesome video. I’m actually doing mine right now ALL WHEEL DRIVE. You do have to at least loose the differential and let in hang otherwise oil pan won’t come off. Thumbs up on the torque specs and sequence.

I agree with you that the new gasket looks like a really good quality gasket. It doesn't look flimsy that's for sure. It's really nice to get 2 birds with 1 stone getting this sort of work done while the truck is taken apart for your lift kit. Probably saves you a ton of time and work to do this all before you put all the lift and the diff all back in.

Fel-Pro makes good gaskets. This job would be so much harder with the diff in the way. Figured why not do it now and see if I can't stop some of the leaks. I am curious to see if I stopped any of the leak. The back corner part of the gasket seemed like it had separated.

I know this is old now, but I'll comment anyway. My wife and I are planning a day or so in October to replace the entire gasket set on the bottom of the engine of our recently purchased 2004 Sierra 5.3 . It's leaking like crazy on the bottom. Which gaskets? Doesn't matter. Since it has 190K on it, it's best just to replace everything at once, since we are under there making a mess and the weather will be "good". (Weather is never good on a planned day). So rear seals to front seals and maybe even a timing chain if necessary. Why not? We'll be in there, just do it.
@mossman381
@mossman381 11 ай бұрын
I did oil pan gasket, oil cooler lines and valve cover gaskets and my leaks really slowed down. There is an oil pressure sender that can leak in the back too. I think I had a small rear main leak. That would require removing the trans to fix.

Good idea to do it now. They rivet the gasket? WTH! Looks like it was maintained pretty good.
@mossman381
@mossman381 7 жыл бұрын
It must save time at the engine assembly line. No need to rivet the new gasket in place. From the looks of the oil drain plug the oil has been changed a million times. The first oil change that I did on the truck the oil looked funny to me. I thought maybe they added Lucas oil stabilizer or something to it. They said they didn't so I don't know. The engine is pretty clean for 260k.

I know this isn't the way you did it because you had it up on a rack and you were doing a whole lift kit, but for us guys that need to lie on our back on the floor, is it okay to use front tire ramps to support the vehicle when removing that crossmember and dropping the diff, or does the vehicle need to be on jack stands?
@mossman381
@mossman381 6 жыл бұрын
If you aren't touching the suspension you should be able to use ramps. Make sure the ramps are rated for the weight of your vehicle. Jack stands might be a good idea for safety. Again be very careful when jacking your truck up and getting under it. If it falls and you are under the truck you will get hurt. Please be safe. I don't want people to get hurt trying to work on their vehicles.
