Silverado Duramax Frame Restore Part 2: Rust Removal, Vertical Shock Mount Fab, and POR15 Coating!

We put a ton of work into this Duramax frame over a week! New fuel tank crossmembers, vertical shock mounts, rust removal, and POR15 coating.

Thanks I appreciate the help, how are the welds holding up on the frame for the shock mount crossmember? Wondering if I should do the same thing or make bolt in crossmembers

I know it’s been a while since this video was posted, but how does the vertical rear shock mounts help the truck? My duramax is lowered and set up as a “street truck” but I also daily it. I’m looking for better ride quality and launching. my drivers side shock mount broke, would I be better off replacing the mount on the axle tube or doing the vertical shock mount kit? Thanks in advance! I love your truck by the way it gives me motivation for mine!

Cheers! If you're looking for ride quality improvement then vertical shock configuration is not the way to go. The shocks are triangulated from the factory, giving the truck impact protection from fore/aft motion. Helps to smooth out impacts from bumps in the road, potholes, etc. When you put them in a vertical config you lose that. May be better for launching but for every day driving I can speak from experience, this truck rides like a logtruck.

how is the POR 15 holding up over a year now?

Pretty much perfect! I had a brake line come apart last summer and where it dripped it became gummy and peelable. But I cleaned the area and refinished it. Other than that little spot theres been no issue.

What steps did you take to do under the cab?

I went the time consuming/laborious route of wire wheeling and cleaning the rails under the cab and all the way up to the front. The best way would be to pull the cab/engine/all lines and sandblast. On the passenger side I actually used a oxy/acetylene torch to burn away the remaining paint/undercoating but that's not possible on the driver side due to all the brake lines/harnesses. Once cleaned I used the same POR15 coating
