I just changed mine yesterday. Do yourself a favor and pull the wheel and the fender well out and you’ll have much better access to the wire housing/red clip. Go very very slow. I suggest trying to move the red clip back and forth before trying to just move it down to release it. Mine was very very brittle and I luckily didn’t break it. I followed this video and this is the only video you’ll need to watch to change the starter on this particular model. I used a small flat head screw driver on the red clip and treated it as if it was thin glass lol. Good luck guys

I just did my starter on my 2015 Silverado. I am a mechanic but I had to do it on my back with truck dead in the driveway and 29 degrees outside. So I looked it up here and did my homework so as to spend the least amount of time fighting the order of things to come off. This was spot on. Had starter out in 4 minutes lol. Nice job on this video.

Good info. The follow-up to this video is cleaning the crapped-up connections at the solenoid once the starter is out. No new starter required. Just use the wire wheel on your Dremel to clean the oxidation the main wire and connections. There's one 100% copper wire/connection that was turned blue-green from all the oxidation. Cleaned and VROOM on the 1st crank. Saved about $110 bucks.

I know the very minimal DIY car projects like tire change, battery swap, oil change on my 2015 sierra Denali but have never tried something this intensive (which I know is still pretty basic for a mechanic). Money is kinda tight so I figured I’d look up how to do it myself. Mind you it took me 4-5 hrs to complete because I had some mishaps. Had to make a few runs to the auto store for wrong size ratchets needing a new jack, feeding kids and stuff like that. The actual job took 45 mins. You made this very simple. Thank you for saving me money and making such an easy to use video! Haha! Much appreciated! She started right up!

Thank you for the clean and clear details on this. I generally watch these videos for the tips or info on the various connector scenarios as figuring out the blind ones or hard to get to connectors generally consumes the most of amount of time and swearing on these projects. I really wish that GM would at some point in time would have hired some one with enough confidence to move the solenoid for the starter to the fenderwell or other easy access location so it was just a one wire run to the starter and you could troubleshoot the electrical side without crawling under it. LITTLE UPDATE:---I have a 2018 silverado that I just finished pulling the starter and doing some maintenance on it. I have pulled a lot of starters in my time and have never actually replaced one with a new one for the fact that you can pretty much repair them with a few minor parts or clean them up and do a little maintenance on them to get them to work as they should. As I stated above the, the thing that really causes me a lot of pain are the various types of connectors that the auto manufactures use now. This starter is not difference. I pulled the passenger side wheel and inner fenderwell as to make it real easy to get to the connector and other terminal post. Even with that, I was not able to get the little red tab to slide as described. So I pulled the starter with that start wire still installed and flipped it over so I could see the clip straight on. Even right in front of me with compete easy access I was still not able to get the red lock clip to slide. So as I was on my last few attempts before calling it quits, cutting the wire and installing my own connector as I usually do with these pos connectors they use, the clip assembly began to just basically break apart and kind of crumble which allowed me to remove the connector. Now the good the part, I found the that connector mounted on the starter was nothing more than a pin type connector, like probably a 16 ga, with a ring terminal on the back side that terminates on the post of the solenoid. The plastic housing it is a part of is also part of the battery terminal post on top. I removed the housing, cut the worthless connector off and bolted the battery terminal portion back on. I then soldered on a ring terminal to the start wire and terminated it to the post the way it should have been done in the first place. I soldered the ring terminal on because I am a retired EE from the aerospace industry where we have to build stuff right the first time, not like the AI where they apparently just wing it. Thanks again for taking the time to put together this tutorial as It made this job easy to prepare for as well as insure I wasn't missing anything with that connector, they actually are just junk and using them is not at all a good design practice.

Did yours do the grind when it's cold out right after it starts before it broke or did it just crap out? Because whenever it's cold out like below freezing 32° or colder. It makes this little grind noise like it's still on the flywheel a little bit after it's fired but once the engine is warm it doesn't do it again

I just got my starter out (and now I am waiting for a new one to come via ebay). By far, it was getting that wire connector (with the little red tab) off that stumped me the most. I spent literally more than an hour trying to figure out how it unsnaps. Using the tips of my fingers didn't work to "get that red tab down". I had to use a 90 degree pick (Harbor Freight) to gently pull on that red tab (maybe 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch) in the same direction that the wires are coming out (ie. You don't pull away from the body of the connector, you merely slide the red tab AWAY from where the connector does into the starter. Then you pinch and wiggle. I you do it correctly is should come off in about 3 seconds. Think of that red tab as being like a sliding door. When you slide it, it allows it to unlock from the starter motor. (You are not pinching the red tab or pulling it away from the body of the connector. You are sliding it like gate. Basically it is like it is on a track.

Great video! Very clear instructions. Thank you for listing the tools at the beginning. The job really would have only taken an amateur like me 15-20 mins except for the stupid wire connector. Even after reading Phaedrus’ very clear instructions, I still broke the tab and struggled for 40 mins to get it off. The red tab is super fragile. I broke it pulling down with my fingernail! Really take it slow so you don’t break it. Since I have gorilla hands and broke it, I had to figure out how to install it and have it stay on. I used a very small dab of gorilla glue on the male plastic adapter then once the wire connecter stayed in place, I reenforced it with zipties. Dealing with the stupid broken clip took way longer than it should have. Moral of the story, this video is fantastic, just take your time with the clip and be very very gentle with it or you will pay the idiot tax like me with extra time added on to the repair. Again, very simple job to DIYS, just be careful with the clip.

Thanks for the tip on the 90 degree pick, glad I tried to find the answer so I did not break it like many on here did. I also used a squirt of WD40 to reduce the friction on plastic to plastic rubbing. That and 90 degree pick was effortless pulling red tab toward the direction of clip removal.

Hey everyone. That Harbor Freight pick is item #4761 (orange handle) or you can use #815 (black handle): They are "Pittsburg Mini Pick & Hook Set". Spray WD40 on the wire connector first, because all the dirt and dust prevents the red tab from sliding easily. Remember to use the 90 degree pick and SLIDE the little red tab in the same direction it is already aligned. If you pull it AWAY from the connector, it will break.

On my 2015 4 x 4, not jacked up, I found it easier to pull the passenger front wheel and lift the skirt to access the two solenoid wires. The cable coming off the battery won’t allow the starter to drop enough to get both of them. Pull the 13mm nut, let the starter drop, have the new starter readily available, let the old starter drop, remove the heat round shield pull the red tab out and pull the boot off . Install the boot ,lock the tab, feed the starter back up, bolt it up, then reconnect the cable coming from battery through the wheel well. Reinstall heat shields and your good to go. I do not have a shop, just a driveway, jack, stands and and good old set of Craftsman tools. Took about an hour with lessons learned. Thoughts?

Phenomenal video, man. However, I too, broke the dang red clip. When attaching the connector to the new starter, unfortunately it wouldn’t clip on, so now I’m worried that it’ll vibrate loose over time. Anyone know if there is a replacement connector that can be spliced on in place of the broken connector?

Broke my clip last summer while replacing the starter... shook loose today and needed a tow home. Got under the truck, connector was loose... pushed back on and truck fired right up. Looking at options to repair right now vs. replace - not a lot of room to splice in there. Maybe a small dab of RTV/sillicone to keep it on. But I don't want it too attached in the event I need to replace starter again. Ugh.

@@AaronHinesAuto I know it's the starter because it started 15+ times after a beating and I learned it's the original one and died at 134k miles so I think it served its purpose

Thanks! Just a heads up that the 4.3L V6 is a ridiculously tight squeeze. Save yourself the trouble and take off the tire, side covering, loosen the sway bar, unclip transmission coolant lines, remove skid plate and bend any heat shields out of the way. I had a heck of a time rotating the starter int position. Whole thing Took about 5hrs. I would not have wanted to do this in a parking lot somewhere, it took ALOT of finesse and cursing.

I'm doing the same on a 2017 4.3 V6 and can't get the starter to come out won't fit. Is yours 4WD?? I've tried going thru the wheel well and from below. My Haynes manual mentions re!moving the front diff mount bracket..?

I'm struggling with my replacement. The bolt closer to the engine came about halfway out and is now stuck. Spins freely but won't come out. Tried putting a pry bar on it but won't budge

Brilliant, thanks! What's the first wire you took off (wire with the heat shield). The plastic clip that holds it on broke off and now the wire won't stay in.

I pushed it on as hard as I could and used flat head to push the remaining black part of the clip in and then duct taped it before putting heat shield back over it. Wasn't sure if it was on all the way but started right up over and over again

Great video but I must say you need pretty small hands to fit in there or I have big hands. One thing I would add.. Be careful on the red clip, it breaks easy and GM wants a lot for pigtail. Tiny starter no wonder they fail,.

You are absolutely right about the hands. I can reach everything but not nearly as easy. And how the hell you get the connector off!? Pretty sure I broke the red tab on mine.

@@mkukua02 mine just pushed straight back, or should I say the replacement did, I broke mine too. The replacements are not the same as the old one, I bought a replacement pigtail and broke it to get the red tab out thinking I could put it in the old one, it won't go. So I ordered another, soldered it on. Not sure about the year but Amazon has replacements way cheaper than anyplace else search for ACDelco PT2974 it said it would not fit my truck (2018) but it did. It does come with a crimp connecter but I soldered mine on, not fun, but more trusting of that.

Hey thanks for the help!! I did have a question though I reinstalled the new starter but now it makes a grinding sounding the old starter didn’t come with shims but should I install shims in the new one also I broke the little red tab that that locks for the signal wire having trouble getting that connection to stay put

Stacy Starrett went from an aftermarket starter (Duralast) back to OEM new starter no shims needed and zip tied broken connection in place super glue might work too
